Somewhere I read this was 120/220. I assume that is the grit you're cleaning out with the soap and water. What do you use the sugar for? Do you use it as the 500 grit or is it to clean the grit off the rocks? Sorry if they're dumb questions but I'm new to rock polishing and I haven't seen sugar being used. Thank you!!

Heya, no dumb questions, only questions! Yes, the soap and water is to aid in the grit removal. Both the cleanout batch and the second batch loaded are 120/220 (some stones take several 'runs' before moving on to the next stage). The sugar is to increase the viscosity of the solution and thereby slowing down the action of the vibe to prevent the stones from chipping each other. Hard stones like agate/jasper/pet. wood won't easily chip, but, I run mixed batches with a little bit of everything (Mohs 4-7) so I need the additive. Sugar can also be very helpful in both tumble and vibe polish as it can fill small surface imperfections and then be dissolved with warm water and released.

I noticed you used at least 4 cups of sugar possibly as much as 6 cups of sugar. Doesn’t borax slow down the action of the vibe and clean the stones? If I dumped that much sugar in my grass I would have a worse problem with ants. I would think that the sugar might be a good addition when tumbling Amber. Have you ever tumbled Amber?

@@darlene7461 Heya, I used 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup 120 Aluminum Oxide grit, 1/2 cup 220 Aluminum Oxide grit, and 1/4 cup 500 grit Brown Aluminum Oxide (for fun). The sugar really doesn't bother my lawn. I have not tumbled amber, it has a mohs hardness of 2 which means that you can easily scratch it with your fingernail...it is also usually very expensive so if I was to shape/polish some: I would probably do it with a dremel by hand.

@@lordsorril3732 you are so amazing. I really appreciate you answering me. Brown aluminum Oxide I haven’t see so I will keep my eyes open. I really think the sugar is what I need fit my Amber.
