I think anything documenting how you started to leave her alone for long periods of time would be helpful and how to go about it properly and lessening the chance of separation anxiety, think that’s one of the things that worried me the most with my puppy

Yes! It is really hard especially in the first month or so for them just to whine whine whine when you're not attached at the hip. But if you learn how to deal with it-- and with time, it gets ( a little ) better!❤️

@@lolalover24212 Yeah, but it happens. Don't act like it doesn't. Many families leave their puppies for a long time. I used to be one, I just didn't know better. My dogs did turn out fine in the end. But I wouldn't do it to another puppy, ever. I just feel really bad about it. I always come home during my break and take them out and play a little.

I would also love if a video like this could be done! My dog is 10 months old, we have crated her every time we leave since we got her at 8 weeks. She is so anxious. It didn't help when we moved from our apartment into a house. She was in our apartment for about 6 months. Any tips would be helpful!

Hi Zach and Bree, you mentioned you wouldn’t want to make us wait through all of the crying during the crate training, but you have no idea how valuable it is to see it played out in real life. Reading books and watching other videos where they show 15 seconds of crying does not give us an idea of what it really should look like. I really appreciated that you showed it for a long time and that you showed the timer for how long it went on for. I also like that you showed your distance from her because when I was trying to crate train my puppy, I sat right outside of his cage and he got increasingly frantic. I was so worried about traumatizing him, I ended up giving up on crate training altogether, because I didn’t ever get a chance to really see it done in real life and I had no concept of how many minutes I should wait. So, thank you. I hope you continue to show more crate training as the days go on so I can get a sense of how long is normal for the dog to cry for as the days go on. Thank you, from Idaho.

    • @lolalover24212

  • @hannahholness4990

    Summary Girl:
    Steps:
    1. Acclamate puppy to the outside place to go potty
    2. Prepare living space (crate and sectioned off area for potty, lined with pee pads)
Why Train Your Dog To Use Pads?
    - Bad Weather
    - Apartment Living
    - Travelling and More!
    Sound Desensitization -
If your puppy had problems with sleep you will most likely be sleeping near them so you can do a bit of sound desensitization and Clicker Training with something that might make loud noise eg. Blow-up mattress.
Remember! The clicker means: "Good dog! You've earned a treat!
When your puppy sleeps make don't try to be quiet but don't overwhelm them. Just encourage them to be relaxed and sleep when it is noisy.
    Pet - to - Pet Introduction -
Take Your Time. Don't rush into the introduction. All you want to do know is just show them that there is another animal by walking past or something like that. Know your pets as well. If they are a bit nervous for example be calm, relaxed and patient with the introduction process.
    Exercise -
    Mornings:
Have a nice puppy play session with toys and "fetch". Not to much though because they are just getting used to it. Enjoy the time playing and bonding with your pup. Make sure you have regular exercise.
    Puppy Anxiety -
Puppy anxiety is very normal. Allow them to relax by themselves. Set a timer for when there anxious. You do not have to reward when they settle down naturally and don't feel guilty when they whine (even though it's hard). If you check of all the boxes like their not hungry or need exercise don't feel bad.
Training for Baths, Nail Trimming and Toothbrushing -
Take it slowly when introducing these things to your puppy/dog. Go at there pace and stop if they start to get stressed because that will only set you back if you continue. Use positive reinforcement to build up a positive association with these activities.
Remember! Always start this training early. Do not see that you have to bathe them a say "Well, we'll see how it goes". It probably won't end well.
    Training -
To prevent your pup from building up bad behaviours be one step ahead of them and intercept them from biting on the table leg for example. When they turn there attention to you instead of doing it reward them (use clicker if desired).
    Hope this helps :)
Make sure to sub to Zak George and buy his books for more info on Dog Training.

Using the “keep the puppy attached to me” technique did WONDERS for our current dog’s training. It was so much easier than any other dog I’ve ever had. All the same breed, so you’d think it would be similar. Nope. Building the bond, establishing pack order, and keeping her out of trouble we’re exponentially easier this time around. And it opened up so many impromptu training opportunities that never would have happened otherwise. Fantastic advice and I absolutely second it.

Oh, gosh Zack, haha! My dog is 14 months old now, a big 125lb Cane Corso, and I got him at 8 weeks. I did (and continue) to do everything "right" and he's turning into a great young dog that loves to work with me (CGC done, now for TK titles and rally!), but for the first month after i got him I was a MESS... I think just from stress, for the first 3 days after I got him I got maybe a sum total of 700 calories and 3 hours of sleep in me. I went half crazy, and vowed that i will never subject myself to puppy raising again, or at least for a long long LONG time... Cut to a year later, this weekend I got the "I should definitely think about getting another puppy! I need a beauceron, I want to do more dog sports, lets GO!!!!" bug. This series is helping ground me again for SURE, reminding me of the most rewarding parts of puppy training, and also the lowest lows. The inflatable mattress by the crate and prolonged puppy-crying is giving me flashbacks... Thank you for the relatable puppy-raising content :P

Inertia is adorable! And thank you for reminding me just how much work a puppy is! When it's time to add a new member to our family, I'd thought about a puppy. But I think we'll just do what we always do---when one that needs a home (for which ours would be "perfect") finds its way into our lives, we take that one (regardless of age, looks, breed, health status, temperament etc.). And I must say we've gotten some really, really awesome dogs that way.

I love all of your dog training techniques!! You’re probably my favorite out of all the ones I’ve watched! I love how you show everything step by step and how gently you are with each dog you meet. You’re very aware of how the dog might be feeling and how to appropriately respond to that. I don’t have a dog yet because I’m not ready for one but I do love them! I’ve been thinking of getting a dog in the future but I have to do as much research as I can before I make any decisions. So I watch a lot of dog videos and training videos just to see what it might be like to own one and what I will have to do to prepare and what to be prepared for. You’re videos do a great job of that! I’m so happy with these new puppy experience episodes! She’s adorable and one lucky pup to end up with a great person who knows what they are doing. Thank you for your help!

I love Zak and learn from him. I have had 3 border collies, and other breeds. I have a veterinary background. There are a few things in this video that I would do differently, but that's just me. One is that I thought the constant leash (such as when playing "fetch") in the house is amusing; my theory - and believe me it holds - is that if you encourage a pup to bond emotionally with you, and it's a herding dog or retriever - it isn't going to leave your side. I have rewarded that constant staying with me, with verbal encouragement and treat rewards ("Stay with me.") Of course you end up with a dog that has to follow you into the bathroom every time. But you also have a dog that can be off leash in the front yard and comes 99% of the time when called. I actually learned this method years ago from a pro dog trainer and I really use it with a puppy from day one, because I like my dogs off leash for instance when I hike with them, and this way they are very reliable. (CAUTION: Doesn't work with all breed types. Never let a hound off leash unless you want to give chase. LOL)
I have mixed feelings about your allowing her to cry in the pen until she falls asleep from emotional exhaustion. For me, that isn't a healthy way to raise a dog. But again, I don't confine them constantly either. I would have made the sandwich and let her follow me into the kitchen to explore. Which she would have, because I've already trained her to stay with me at all times. My pups always fell asleep when they were ready and their bodies required it, not when I demanded it. Of course, by your method you're going to avoid "accidents" on the floor. I never had many anyway because we went outside every hour.
I found the noise desensitization interesting.. I never put conscious effort into that. I went about my normal business, played the stereo or radio or TV, and let them learn to sleep with it, which they did from about Day 1.
OH! One more note: Zak. This is a border collie, friend. They love to pee in the rain. LOL (You ever been to Ireland or Scotland? You'll see what I'm talking about.)
Again, this is a great idea for videos, and I learn a lot watching you. Plus you're so charismatic and articulate - never a dull moment!

I am loving this series! I just adopted a dog a few weeks ago, and even though she isn't a puppy anymore, the content is definitely relatable! I would love to learn on how to socialize our dog with other dogs and what is normal behavior during play time.

This is great and really useful Zak. I have just got a small puppy yesterday and it's been great seeing you work with your puppy to get an idea of what to do. Ordered a couple of things for her to see how that goes she doesn't seem to be bothered as of yet by toys much. Had a bit nibble of her collar today but then not that fused with anything else. It's early days mind you.

You have great timing with this new series! I am about to bring home my Nova Scotia puppy in October and currently all I am doing is working and reading books/watching videos about how to raise a puppy. Such a great idea with this step by step new puppy instruction. Also - Inertia is such a cutie😉 Greetings from Poland🇵🇱

I'll be moving out soon, and was never allowed to have a dog, but now Im planning on getting one since I'll be on my own. This is extremely well done and informative!! Thank you!! I do have a 9 year old cat who's extremely angry at everything so I AM worried about how he'd react to moving, and then to getting a dog in the picture as well, but it was reassuring to see that your cat also was hissing and swiping at Inertia and you didnt seem worried about it. Hopefully my cat will also be able to take to a puppy well if we take it slow and steady :)

I love seeing the small steps you should take when bringing home a potty. Working at home and being with my pup almost 24/7 was such a luxury and helped a lot in training during the first year. Cant imagine getting a new puppy if I had a busy schedule. Still learned something in this episode though... I should've taught my dog to pee on pads as well cause she's 100% trained to potty outside and it's hard during the rainy season. I've resorted to training her to wear boots lol.
