For me the chalk outline reference means living as a zombie, a living dead when on antidepressants since they take away most feelings and energy one has. "Still here in this bed that I crawled in." "Take this one, wash it down and you'll be fine. The feeling goes and you draw a chalk outline." That's how I understand it anyway, don't know if that's how Ren meant it.
And as always, thanks for the reaction.

  • @mariogansbeke

8:32 You explained the chalk outlines yourself, Aileen. When you talked about your own experience taking medication and you not feeling yourself, looking from the outside, feeling like a zombie of some sort... you walked inside your own floating chalk outline. You felt absent, almost dead, not in touch with the world.
Truly touching reaction, thank you for your emotions. You're an angel.

As someone with mental health issues, this song is lifesaving. Ren's ability to resonate with us really helps to dry up the feeling of being completely alone in the universe.
And Chinchilla's voice?? DAMN. It hurts in all the right places.

You had said when you took the pills you felt as if you were floating above your own body as if you were a guardian angel looking down on your body going through life. You raised yourself in these floating chalk outline.

It's so very healing. I think many of us has felt that way & he gave us words for it. So many times I have felt like that. The frustration of just being so confused with everything. You're sick & they give you meds. Then they quit giving you meds but the problem hasn't been solved so you end up turning towards the wrong kind of meds. cause that's all you can get & you think the street meds are helping but they're not. Then they tell you your wrong for taking meds. Nothing helps & you just get caught in a viscous cycle. Some don't come out of it. My son didn't.
I found out REN has Lyme disease & was misdiagnosed for years. Looking through everything I remembered when my son was around 5 we had to take him to the ER to have a tic dug out of him. He got really sick & was sick & suffering for so long & we not once thought he could have had Lyme disease. It has helped me though because I know he's not suffering anymore. He'd been in & out of jail but had started to turn his life around when a neighbor called the police on him & they took him in on a warrant that was 61/2 yrs. old. Off paper at 7. In his cell within 61/2 hrs. in June. He would have loved REN & I feel a closeness to him through REN.
I feel like I taught my children well & now I don't have either one of them. If it wasn't for The Good Lord I would have joined them but He has me here for something & I know I'll be with them again. They suffer no more.
I think you're a beautiful young lady. I love people's reactions & I think REN does watch people's reactions. I find it so freeing to know that I'm not alone in those feelings. So many of us suffer them & can relate. Music is so healing.

I've seen this 20 times...? 50 times? I don't know but it still chokes me up. And although I don't have experience with it, I think you summed up exactly what the song is referring to when they talk about "Chalk Outlines". One of the main points is walking around in a chalk outline - not being present - not really living, just a walking dead shadow of yourself because of the medication they put people on. My wife deals with depression and she has told me about medications that they had put her on that made her empty, running red lights without a care about the consequences or what could happen. "Walking around in a floating chalk outline..."

What a powerful reaction, Aileen! I'm so glad you got to this song. It's one of my all-time favourites.
As a few others have said, the 'Chalk Outlines' is generally taken to mean that exact feeling you described of not feeling like yourself when you were on medication.
"Walk around in a floating chalk outline"... the meds stop you feeling almost anything, you're just a shell, an outline of yourself, walking around like a zombie.
There's also a hint of self-medicating with other things.. "push it back down with an new habit", but that can also mean just trying a second med to counteract the side effects of the first one, then a third and so on and so on, chasing something - anything - to make you feel ok.
And yet being scared of feeling ok, because you know it doesn't last and you'll just get hurt again if you allow yourself to be happy for a moment.
Or at least, that's my take on it.
I loved when you pointed upwards and waved your finger in the air a few times when Chinchilla hit the high notes during the bridge!
I do exactly the same every time - it's exhilarating listening to her voice dance around up there.
I'd highly recommend their other duet "How to be me" (the live version).
They take the harmonies and emotion up to a whole new level in that. It's honestly breathtakingly good. But again, it's desperately sad, so have the tissues handy.
I'd also encourage you to have a peek into the Chinchilla rabbit hole - Fingers (Live for Hunger TV) is an astonishing live performance.
Seriously, Chinchilla is a powerhouse and deserves all the love she has been getting lately.

Your empathy, sincerity, appreciation of art and music, and your expression in your description of what you took away from this song, felt extremely genuine. I second many many other comments and highly recommend How To Be Me, the LIVE version with Ren & Chinchilla. I also recommend FIRE from Rens Freckled Angel album, released in 2015. I think the chalk outline represents walking around feeling dead or zombie like from the medication side effects or even just from the symptoms of different mental illnesses. Like the mental fog, etc
It's such a beautiful song filled with so many truths around taking these medicines that are supposed to help us but sometimes they make us worse or create new problems for us. It can be interpreted so many different ways, that's just the beauty of music & art! ❤

I'm not sure if they have expounded on the chalk outline thing however I read is as you live in the "floating" chalk outline. As in: it's drawn around you from the moment you're effectively made numb from the pills. They turn you from a human into just a husk that knows how to walk.
Well worth Exploring Chinchilla too, she is phenomenal. My personal favourite of the biggies that get a lot of reacts is Elements, that's got a bass sound to die for and some gorgeous vocal layers, all done by her.
They're all good though, I love the video for Fingers, the song has moments of quite intense brutality and the pulsing music in the studio version just adds so much depth, and menace, to the horrific descriptions. The live version is good but it's just sung over piano so you lose the music but gain Chinchilla's goosebump raising performance. She is incredible.

❤❤ I loved your reaction. So heart-felt. You explained chaulk outlines without realizing. When you recalled feeling of being out of body thats it. Taking the medication and making you feel not like yourself. The real you is like the walking dead. Or a floating chaulk outline going through the motions but it's not you it what the medication made you feel - most times nothing, dead. And by taking the medication you draw your chaulk outline. And what the medication does to you erases you in the chaulk outline. So you had it. Keep up the amazing work.

Ren gets you right in the feelz. He is such an amazing lyricist, drawing from his own experiences. He speaks for so many people going through their own struggles. Great reaction!

I really do not think Ren has made a bad song and somehow every live version seems to be even better than the recorded versions. But I think this has to be my favourite so far and can not get enough of it. So glad the You tube algorithm pushed Hi Ren to me on Xmas day last year. It spoke to me deeply and hit like a sledgehammer. I was lucky enough to hear him before the reaction boom hit for him and I do not think there have been many independent artists, if any, that has both been pushed soo well by and for the reaction community. And he is humble enough to realise and appreciate that fact. There have been very few days since hearing Hi Ren that I have not listened to one of his songs. A once in a generation talent IMO.

the song to me is about how medications for mental health make you feel like a ghost. i used to be on Zoloft, which is sertraline so the line " sertraline and a sip of seratonin".... while i was on zoloft i was worse as a person in almost every way, i just let everything fizzle out. I can't find the words to describe that time in my life. i was parting a lot and had people around but everything during that time was such a blur, it sounds cliche, but i could be at a party and it felt like nothing around me was real, like even though there was people at my apartment, me and them weren't really there together, like i was there apart from them.

This song never fails to make me cry, I'm glad you hit this one next. This one hits so hard in the gut but it's also so catchy and perfect that you find yourself singing it.
Walking around in a floating chalk outline is such a hard line.

I love your reactions. You can see that you're absolutely feeling every second, it's a joy to watch. You have many layers of beauty, not just the way you look - you're also so real and so emotive and in tune with the world around you. Get it! Wishing you all the best.

Chalk used to be used in medicines as a binding agent. It's now mostly used in the manufacture of substandard, or fake pills.
I also think that the chalk outline is a temporary status indicator. Showing where someone once was. The whole thing about getting a new habit suggests that his life is constant series of chalk outlines. He goes from one to the next, in an effort to escape from life, or reality.

That "E" will always be a part of you and Benny(s). B&E is something bigger than even you now Bo. I've lost 2 friends to themselves, 2 from OD and my best friend coded 2 different times but managed to live. We feel you. The Bennys love you. Folks may leave us but they are not forgotten. They live in us, through us. You can have Benny without both B AND E. Much love big B, PLP!!

Empathy just pours from you. Big hearts. I wish I could feel the way you do, you're like a full empath, and in a weird way watching you experience these things echoes whatever feelings are so very much in my basement. It helps me to see an empath doing their thing... It helps me to calibrate toward the middle ground. @RenMakesMusic

I LOVE this song, but wait until you here the other track they do together, "How To Be Me" make sure you do the live version, it's one of most technically skilled harmonizing I've heard in a quite some time, but the content of the lyrics will tear your heart out. Great reaction!!

What I like about this song, is the fact it is not even close to perfect, which makes it perfect, the rawness is great. They could have put some autotune and compressors on this, and the two could sound like one in harmony, but that would have killed what this song is. This is a great example of how the human is what makes the song great not all the tech and effects or even the mixing, this was a one-shot live performance. Our musical history tells us, what makes the soul feel is when the raw human emotion comes out in the song, when the pitch is not perfect but emotional.
