- Building a cruising sailboat
I'm working towards getting the boat closed up for the coming colder weather, so, after the forward hatch last week, it's the turn of the main entrance hatchway. The vertical opening of the companionway hatch is framed up ready for the washboards. Also, the deck boxes are sealed in where they led into the cabin area and the deck stringers are filleted and sealed.

This is the story of my building of a Jay Benford designed, 31.8ft, junk-rigged, schooner dory. The boat is constructed of exterior quality plywood, sealed with epooxy and sheathed in glass fibre and epoxy. One of the great beauties of these boats is that the ballast keel is fitted towards the end of the build, enabling the boat to be kept lower in the shed for most of the construction time. The keel and rudder are fitted shortly before launch.
Thank you!
Tony
I love the colour of the frame
Thanks Jas 😃👍
Very Pro, contrasting wood colour super.
Thanks Rollem 👍
P.s. I've seen several of these with out the fore doghouse..they look rather unfinished. You were spot on to add it . If it looks right , it is right .
Thanks again William. The plans have a butterfly hatch of those dimensions in that same location. I felt a doghouse with flat opening hatch might be less likely to leak. Both give extra light and headroom in the forecabin
As usual, immense attention to detail and progress. Can really appreciate the craftsmanship and style that you are achieving. Good on you mate. Taa Taa .
Thanks mate 😀👍
What better reason for a late night than watching a new Tapatya video?! The companionway looks superb, Tony. And to think that it's all recycled mahogony; I bet you're glad you kept that old door and didn't "declutter" it!
Thanks Chris. Yes indeed, and the thing is, I picked it up from a building site where is was destined to go in a skip and would have been burnt or whatever. We'd struggle to find wood of that quality these days, and whilst I know that woodworkers aren't the main problem, even yesterday there was a very disturbing report on tropical deforestation. As in many walks of life, our use of resources is, at best, questionable
That is one chunky, solid companionway frame! And, as always, all the little details are well thought out. Nice work, Tony!
Thanks Garryck
Sorry for the slow response. RUclips had put your comment in the possible spam folder for some unfathomable reason and I've only just found it 😕🤔
good job looks great
Thanks Daniel 😀
All of your new hatch work looks great. Everything is coming together. That boat is going to be fantastic, I could tell long ago.
Keep the videos coming, I can’t get enough of them.
Thanks James. I'll do my best!
hi boat is looking very good
Thank you Greg 👍
Already said many times but I can't help myself Tony, companionway is Magnificent. That door will live on for many more years to come !!
Thank you Barton 👍😀
Steady hand and the "comfy" is going to be your joy. Fair wind and calm seas Tony.
Thanks Mac 👍😀
That mahogany frame is gorgeous, Tony! So deep and rich. Tapatya is getting to be quite the shippy girl. Just goes to show a bit of the red stuff goes a long way on a boat. Then again, I've always been partial to Gingers... lol 😍😄👌
Yes indeed, Pierre 😜
Nice work Tony, love the contrast in wood colours....
Thanks Graphite. The hull boards will be painted still. There'll still be a good contrast though 👍
I'm old. And a subscriber....
😂😂👍😃
And thank you for that, Bill!
I have to agree with all the comments on that companionway... Excellent work, Tony :-)
Thanks andy 👍😀😂
Tony looking absalutly stunning keep up the great work cant what for your next video
Thanks Gary 👍
Your channel really deserves more subs and views! Keep it up!
Thanks Sea Camel :-)
Doing my best...
Nice looking wood, really sets off the companionway! You can reduce the 'wood on wood' wear of the sliding hatch by attaching 'Delrin', or other slick plastic strips to the underside of the hatch runners, out of sight but so much easier to slide whether dry or wet. And I put a small swing open port light in the upper companionway board to help with ventilation and light in a pretty dark area. Helped with the mold problem during storage as well.
Thanks Mike. I'll look into Delrin 👍
Nice one Tony, looking great.
Thank you Dave Alan 😀👍
Coming along nicely, the hatch looks really good.
Thanks Derek 😀👍
must be nice working with some nice hardwood for a change.
Yes indeed. I'm a big fan of hardwood trim 👍
Looking good! Should be ready for the masts any day now. ;-)
Might be a day or two yet Ward!! Thanks 👍😂😂
looking great, tony! i like the mahogany and the contrast between it and the locust should be cool. (:
Thanks mate!
I lived on a ferro Jay Benford boat
I lived on a ferro, not Jay Benford boat 👍😃
what a nice wood!
Lovely, isn't it?
PS I love that song.
Can I ask why you used nails instead of screw's on the small peace of wood? I'm going to build one my self so any tips and tricks are welcome 😊
Hi Jean. The main reason was because I had some bronze ring nails in stock. I thought I could leave the heads exposed and then varnish the entire hatchway. You could use screws - bronze or stainless- and then either plug them or seal over them somehow. Alternatively, just epoxy glue it together... There are several options 👍
Have you calculated the weight of your vessel ? I wonder how much free-board you will have once it’s floated !
It won't be any heavier than the designed weight, Dave. Should float pretty much where she's meant to 👍
Great job, she's coming along nicely. Is that Hazel singing on the tune? Also have you checked out Sail Life.
Keep up the good work.
stephen T Don’t go distracting Tony with other channels now, he has a boat to finish.
@@PuntBamaPunt1972 Ha Ha might make him work faster to get in the water first.
Sail life, good channel.
stephen T a little friendly rivalry wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Heck, they could just about hit each other with rocks where they are now.
@@PuntBamaPunt1972 As long as it's not the rock he uses to keep the fibreglass in place.
what a nice main hatch ... is it not time to paint her before winter?
Thank Bruno. Paint is low priority at the moment. If she doesn't get painted before winter, then it'll get done next spring....
@@SVTapatya ..was just thinking the color needs some month to fully cure, at least on the hull
I'd better wait till spring then Bruno 👍
how you going to open the companion way hatch when the mast is in the way r am i mistaken is it going to pop up
The companionway hatch will be in 2 halves, Daniel. Only one will slide open - the aft half 👍
Is this the same boat Annie Hill sailed? Badger?
Almost Paul. It’s slightly (2ft) shorter
