There are a million little details in this project that I have touched on at various points since its release (id recommend just scrolling through the comment section of the video, there's a lot of great discussion there) but in the spirit of revisiting the project and learning more about it, here's my favourite intentional interaction at the very start of the project that carries through the rest of the whole battle that I haven't seen mentioned very much:
Light is obviously portrayed as very cocky in his first verse - his demeanor in the project most heavily matches that of his depiction post Episode 25 (L's Death) and it was mainly so I could have the dynamic of Light trying to kill Monika before she even gets the chance to start. It's important to note that the announcer for the battle says "Light Yagami" - Light would use his deductive reasoning to assume that the full name of Monika is just "Monika", since if she had a last name, it'd be listed as his was. He approaches the battle smugly (and even addresses her as "Monika" in the very first line to reinforce this to the viewer) because he believes he has already won since the announcer told him her name. You'll notice that Light writes "Monika" in the Death Note, and then his first verse proceeds for 40 more seconds (the exact amount of time it takes for the Death Note to kill its victim). He fully believes that after his verse ends, Monika's heart will stop beating. Monika does not die because, as a computer file, he would need to include the file extension to write her "full name". (In DDLC she's usually referred to as monika.chr - there are a couple alternative interpretations I've seen that I also like but .chr was the intended one and ties into the "in character" pun in Monika's first verse) Light never gets the Shinigami Eyes in the anime, and this is kept consistent in this battle - Light only knows what the announcer has told him. Ryuk, on the other hand, being a Shinigami, can see Monika's full name and why Light's plan didn't work. The scene at around 1:27 was very intentionally planned out to have Light in visible disbelief that writing "Monika" didn't work and Ryuk over his shoulder clearly amused. You'll notice that there's an eye closing and opening transition as the camera zooms into Ryuk's eyes, and then we see Monika through his Shinigami Eyes, where her full name is, in fact, displayed as Monika.chr. (the date is supposed to be when the person is going to die but obviously that isn't applicable here, so instead I put it as September 22nd, the release date of Doki Doki Literature Club, and I put the year as 20XX which is a competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee reference since Dan Salvato was a competitor and modder of Melee before he made DDLC.) This instance of Light failing and Ryuk knowing why leads into Light's second verse, where Ryuk begins it by mocking both of them. He makes it clear in the anime that he's not on anyone's side and I wanted to reflect that in the battle as well instead of just having Ryuk take Light's side in the battle.
As you can see I put a lot of thought and time into how these characters would interact and I'm really happy with how it all came together in the final project. I'm sure you and other viewers caught bits and pieces of this and got the general idea but I figured I would lay it all out as I saw it while making it in case it helps someone put it together. The amount of time and thought behind this is incredible, it so paid off and it’s SO amazing to see. The story telling in the beginning I picked up on mostly but the fact that he writes her name and is in disbelief that she’s not dead and how it’s exactly 40 seconds is AMAZING!!! This battle was so top tier man, SO well done

I love the play on doki doki and flatlining, that was a clever line. Also the time signature switching during monika’s second verse after she says “I know of a signature you can’t write” is GENIUS. Mad respect
I spent most of 2021 making this project and I distinctly remember my goal being to create something with as much to discuss and analyze even years down the line as possible. The fact that its been almost two years (!!!) since the battle came out and it's still being discussed, analyzed and appreciated by so many people is honestly one of the most fulfilling things I've felt as a creator. Going through these comments (and the comments on the main video ofc) and seeing people not only share their thoughts and breakdowns but even how their opinion on the project has changed since it released really made my day. I love rap battles but there aren't really a whole lot that stand up as enduring pieces that remain in discussion years down the line like classic movies and albums do. I'm not trying to compare myself to one of those all-time great artists or directors that created those timeless works, but I can say with confidence that this was my first real attempt at creating the rap battle equivalent and all things considered it's been a huge success. You guys are all fucking awesome, Josiah especially. Thanks for sticking with me for so long :)
Of course!! Here’s to more battles just like this one where we can still discuss them years down the line!! Because this one is EXTREMELY deserving of it FOR SURE!!!
A few things you missed:
Light: "By your next rhyme, Doki Doki will flatline." The term "Doki Doki" is the Japanese symbolism for "heartbeat".
Light: "My integer overflows this school girl," In programming, an integer overflow is when you try storing a value that is greater than what the variable can hold. Light is basically saying his IQ is such a big number that Monika literally can't comprehend it because it exceeds what she's able to store inside her code.
Light: "So you had best step aside and say "Hello" to my New World." The first thing you learn to do when learning to program is create an output that displays a message. The most popular message to output by FAR is "Hello World!" Light is basically saying that Monika is as basic as you can get as a program.
Monika: "Take it from DDLC / Full game plus the DLC / While Netflix dealt the L see, / You're not the deity L sees." This one is just mostly really good word play that you missed. The end of every rhyme sounds strikingly close to "DDLC", especially "deity L sees". Give it another listen :)
Still definitely one of the better rap battles Eddie has made, and one of my favorite of your reactions to boot :)
Bonus and fun bit of information: The DeathNote takes 40 seconds to kill someone from a heart attack. Light wrote Monika's name in the DeathNote, and exactly 40 seconds later Monika's verse started. The way Light says "By your next rhyme, Doki Doki will flatline" was timed perfectly to where she would have died before she even got to speak.
You did not talk about Yandera-Chan. I only know her game about almost the same thing of monika but with another gameplay style. Anyway the game was never finished until recently if I am not wrong. She was litteraly her rival, dont know how no one caught that.
one thing that was cool about the signature verse is how well crafted it was. if you pause at the code it says time signature = 4/3. If you look up what a time signature is, you will find that she raps that entire verse in the 4/3 signature. But not only that, each of those lines "triggers" each of the codes to break. Sayori with someone being tossed to the side, Yuuri with being obessive and wanting someone, and Natsuki with the father line. Monika could have just won with that alone. Such a well crafted battle my favorite honestly.
OMG, you’re so true! That one part of the video was so well-edited; not only have you pointed out missed details, but Monika is also referencing things that have happened to the other Doki’s while also deleting their files and dissing Light simultaneously. Thanks for this analysis.

A line you kinda missed that I find most people don't get is when light says "say 'hello' to my new world!" it's also referencing how the first program the majority of programmers ever make is a program where you have the software write "hello world" into the console! These raps are just filled with a bunch of little things like that, it's insane!

Don't know if you will see it since it's super late but the YandereDev line reference the developer "YandereDev" that created the game "Yandere Simulator" and is infamous for taking WAY too long to finish it (+5 years) and he did a lot of bad shit as well (pedophile defender and bully).
So he's saying that even this late ass dude could finish what he started but Monika couldn't

I first watched/listened to this battle via YouLoveSkyler’s reaction video, which in the end made me this was a super one-sided battle. Your reaction has helped made me reconsider it and make it much closer than I initially thought.
Additionally, two criticisms of mine for this battle are ones I take back/no longer have: I no longer think Ryuk should’ve been a third party side; his cameo worked and he was portrayed the right way: neutral to both sides. Also, I think the soft composure of Azia’s Monika is more fitting and superior than Peachumari’s intense take on the character in Monika vs. Harley Quinn (though it was still interestingly good). The softer composure seems to be more accurate to the canon voice and possible the overall personality as depicted in DDLC.
I still think Monika won, but this battle is much closer than I initially thought and it appears both sides had the same amount of time in the first round and same amount of full lines overall (with 20-24 in round one for each and 20 in round two; Light’s second verse is counted in three parts as stated here: four lines in part one, eight in part two, and another eight in round three, while Monika’s second verse is four parts with parts one and two having four and eight lines respectively and parts three and four being four lines long each). It felt like both of Monika’s verses were longer than Light’s corresponding verses as I was watching the aforementioned reaction, but revisiting this shows that Monika only had more time in the second round, and even then, it wasn’t by much.
Oh, and regarding the Yandere Dev line, it references how Yandere Simulator is (constantly) being worked on and will get its eventual full release while the teased “Project Libitina” that may have been a continuation to DDLC and was set to come out in 2018 never came out. I may be wrong in some points but this is the best I can explain that line.
While not my true favorite FRB, I can now honestly see why so many people enjoy it, and the rap battle really is a work of art that will be remembered to us FRB enjoyers/lovers. In summary, you’ve helped me praise, appreciate, and even love Light Yagami vs. Monika and for sure reconsidered my original opinion; it really is a banger that isn’t too one-sided as I initially thought.

fucking awesome that the battle has been able to grow on you over time. light vs monika is definitely not a flawless project and has some issues (including some of the stuff you brought up) but its super awesome to see that the project is dynamic enough for people to revisit almost 2 years later and change their mind on. great comment thanks :)
