Favorite version of Loretta’s Scars. Presenting these songs in just acoustic really brings out the tunes underneath the noise of Pavements songs. Such a good songwriter.
So rare to hear your favorite songwriter, favorite singer, and favorite guitarist all wrapped into one sly, kind man.
Holy shit. I ditched college that day to be in the front row at this thing. I'm so happy that someone finally posted it!
You clearly made the right decision.
I did an audio recording of this show but the battery died on the second to last song, lost everything. This was the first show since the breakup, to my knowledge, where he performed any Pavement covers.
I dropped a class and as a result missed out on an English minor to catch the Pavement reunion tour in NYC. English minors are so valuable so I'm still haunted by that mistake /s
@@ConfederateDust It's without a source but according to SM's wikipedia: "On May 23, 2003 in Milwaukee, while touring with his new band The Jicks, Malkmus opened the show by saying, "This is off our first record." The band then proceeded to play an evening's worth of Pavement songs, marking the second time Malkmus had played any of his previous band's songs since their 1999 breakup, the first was on April 22, 2002 in São Paulo, Brazil, where he played 'In The Mouth a Desert'."
i love that fuckin story. i seen seen do this lil itty bitty secret set at electric fetus in minneapolis. good times great stories.
this is an absolute gift to 90s kids pavement fans malkmus respecters lovers of music poetry art commnuity radio etcwahooo waaa many thanks!
It's so great to see Stephen look happy on stage
One of the best American songwriters of all time, and if he's not number 1 he's certainly at the table.
Man, this is great!
I was there. It was fucking epic, and a total surprise. Blessed.
It’s crazy to think how amazing ‘Here’ is....
Ryan Ortega Right?? One of my very faves
The voice of a lifetime. At least my life.
Fin is such a beautiful song
The music was so beautiful❤️
I have tears in my eyes, thanks very much for posting.
it's kind of crazy how he has all these different funky tunings but can still play the song regardless of the tuning (because he doesn't give a fuck i guess)... basically, what i'm saying is that his fingers and mind are weirdly gifted. i don't think many people think about the guitar the way he does.
not to mention he doesn't use a fucking pick. he's a weird motherfucker. i'm surprised he's not left handed
Stephen Malkmus is a tour de force!!
A beauty and a rare treat- thanks for this
Tears!!! Fucking love this dude
Ti conosco da trent'anni e ancora ti ascolto. Tantissimi bei ricordi ❤️🙏
This show was righteous. What a surprise!
This show confirmed for me why Slanted is my favorite Pavement album. Songs were just too good.
His laugh in the third verse of range life lmao. King moment
What a treat.
oh l love him
Yes, yes, yes. Love it!
fantastic!
this is just what i needed
Great Job to Paste Magazine and A Much Needed Show till this Date !
how does he memorise all these lyrics? crazy
He doesn’t. Harness your hopes had about 60% accuracy to his original recording
@@samcheese4303 that there’s the beauty of live art
Well, he did write them
it is amazingly crazy, totally agree. Not to mention all the funky chords and solos.
The great one!!! SM
One of the greatest of all time!
love love love...he could have been a beatle
nah, he's too good for them
tim kurtz little too indie for them😂
Malkmus is no Jimi Hendrix but his guitar playing is as influential as any other artist from the 90s.
@@werrickdinn4878 It's actually Kevin Shields, and is not even close.
Tomas Wolf valid statement
Fuck Jim I Hendrix Jesus are u really trying 2 compare 2 completely styles of music? Indie rock n classic rock, ? Those 2 cant b compared it's just stupid. On top of that hes playing solo w an acoustic guitar. Ugh
@@pineapplecircus he literally said he is no jimi hendrix dumbass
Any other?!!! Any other! He is THE MOST INFLUENTIAL INDIE ROCK 90S GUITARIST. The 90s revolve around what he did with Pavement, lofi revolves around Eric Gaffney of Sebadoh, drums revolve around faith no more's drummer and the drummer of jon Spencer Blues explosion. You cant compare hendrix and malkmus because 1 is a blues rock guitarists defining the sound with robby Krieger of the doors of the 60s sound the other defining a new sound for the 90s along w/ frank black & thurston moore for the indie 99s sound
DE CUELLAR Y PRE-Thank You Very MUCHO
Summer babe sounds soooo good acoustic
Yes!
LENDA!
Amazing set list
you had me at the first song
best version of Summer Babe (acoustic version)
That is a Spiral time, yeah?
Se a humanidade vale a pena, eh quando escuto esse homem.
So good
Pink India..FTW

The man. The myth. The legend. S.M. Jenkins.
First gig ever when I was 15, Pavement, got into the Old Lion
from the planet Fabulous
Enslavement (rhymes with Pavement) I've alerted my Dad.
I met SM once and informed him of this matter, admitting that I was a dork. He acknowledged my dorkiness and claimed that he always knew this. He still agreed to take a photo with me.
I actually think the next verse is all words that rhyme with pavement?
And I won't kill your parents
And roast them on a spit = depravement?
And a-don't you try to etch it
Or permanently sketch it = engravement?
And maybe the next is ailment but that barely rhymes. I'm not sure.
Payment
But he said he wouldn't kill your parents and roast them on a spit.
@@klausmaus1886 that is some clever ass shit right there brother.
If he'd have been 22 years old in 1974, he would have been in Television.
hey, i think i was there...
+paul rader Me too! Had no idea this video existed. Sweet!
💖 Square Diner NYC SM 1998 💖
this version of pink india!
epic when he starts to laugh while singing 'I could really give a f#%k" (about Smashing Pumpkins) and the audience sings along
Does anyone have just the audio, maybe high-res?
Great. Is anyone else gutted that he broke that string when he did? Always wonder what he had planned for the end of RET acoustic.
So wax up the wax fruit it's time for a shine/it's the old fruit that makes wine!!!

Malk is GOD!
S.M. is in a class by himself. And then you need to understand.
what guitars are those?
It’s a Epiphone with a electroacustic pickup
sou teu pai me respeita karalio
Good video cut...Good audio...Good job! :) But, I'll say this..and you probably spotted it after. Stage right camera could have started tight on his reflection in the mirror and pulled out to reveal a tight shot on Stephen on stage...If you edited the shots after, totally understandable. But, if you were cutting it live, a director with ADD looking for magic would have made it happen. Good job none the less. Thanks.
Should I be Lou or mark e. or bob or Ira? Oh well All three + one
does anyone know what kind of acoustic guitar is that?
Looks like an Epiphone?
And now there is a Gibson
honestly ya know you got wordplay skills when u stumble over ur own creatvie prfound silly whacy deep goff yawesome word play - SJOCR
Drop dead handsome and a totally talented songwriter/ player, I HATE THIS GUY
steve wears boxers
Is he John Darnielle's forgotten brother?
He's a poet, Yes..I know him and he does.. I could spit on a stranger if someone denies it, I'll put a giant ramrod on his ars and his life will be like a cigarette. haha
I do have to admit i am his biggest fan but i wouldnt enjoy solo acoustic malkmus. He truly needs the bands behind him and the hype man bob nostanivich
its a bit like pulling teeth lol
He was the slacker. Not the rest of the band. He never gets through one song properly.
Guy gets famous making great music with a band and then, much later, he and his audience become fulfilled by average music. See: Paul McCarntney
That's often the case. But Jicks related stuff often surpasses Pavement - which is impossible - in theory.
@@mucous-membrane the Jicks music is awesome. Hell, they've put out more albums now than Pavement did haven't they? They're all great but Mirror Traffic and Jagbags stand out to me. Also I believe the newest one that escapes me now but has Xtian man on it. I remember having 242 pavement songs on my computer and iPods before my computer messed up and my iPods got stolen and there's probably 150 Jicks tunes so he's up there with the best as far as total songs put out. So much good music to go round from just him and then some of the Kannberg solo stuff's pretty good too.
@@josephbeckmann8106 I like that it sounds like a band in a garage. Achievable, fun and not over produced. And then the lyrics ... now there's a truly unique approach to writing songs.
Maybe learn how to spell McCartney before throwing weak shade
