Late goals in the 1994 Scottish League Cup final saw both Raith Rovers and Celtic go to extra time and eventually penalties to determine who would lift the League Cup for the 1994/1995 season. After Paul McStay missed his penalty, Raith Rovers would walk away as the eventual winners and League Cup Champions at Ibrox.

Gordon Marshall was on loan at Stoke City the previous season and was a terrible goalkeeper. He made horrendous mistakes in about 5 games running at Stoke.

It was because Celtic Park was getting rebuilt, so Celtic played there home games at Hampden that year. Meant they couldn't play it there as it wouldn't have been neutral

Alright people, alright. Listen, I have no idea why I decided to watch these highlights after 27 years. Forever and a day without seeing them again would have been too soon. On this 25th day of August 2021 I decided to click on this video. Tis alas exactly how I remembered it. A few things to note. Everyone remembers this match because the Maestro missed the decisive penalty. The only player above criticism in the squad, such was his mastery of the midfield and of Celtic football club for 12 years, even for something like this. The worst thing to happen to Germany in the 20th century was the hyper inflation of the late 1920s and the economic disaster it caused. This is burned into the German psyche in a way that probably no German quite understands. All German economic policy is thus to avoid inflation, at all costs. What I take away from watching these highlights were 2 goals and at least 2 penalties that Gordon Marshall should have saved. The match would have been thus comfortable. This is the period in history that gives me nightmares over the Celtic goalkeepers situation. Tommy Burns had to realise that Marshall, the whipping boy of the era, was not at the level Celtic needed. Marshall could still have had a good career at another club. Would history have been different with a different goalkeeper? Probably. How much, we will never know. What I do know is that the Celtic goalkeeping position CAN NEVER be allowed to get to this level again. There are not 10 players good enough (who we can afford) that can make up for a Gordon Marshall in the Celtic goal. To have 3 third choice quality goalkeepers last season was more than just not winning a league title it reminded me of a time and situation long suppressed but never forgotten. Though, in Marshalls defence, at least he TRIED to save the shots, not just standing there like a statue. There's that at least.
