I just tried this on my Macbook Air M1 because keys "A" and "D" didn't work. So I've replaced the keyboard myself, a bit tedious and scary but everything seemed to go fine, boots up as normal but the very same keys remain dead ("A" and "D") while the rest of the keys work fine as always.
In case someone is having the same issue and somehow reads my comment:
After reading an iFixit forum post I've realized that this issue isn't caused by a faulty keyboard but actually by an incompatible trackpad (that somehow got installed before this device was sold to me). I've ordered a new trackpad from aliexpress, replaced it and finally the keyboard works as expected! Such a shame I've tried such destructive method for replacing the keyboard when it was probably working fine all along, but at least I've learned something new!!
Thanks for the video anyways, I'm happy I can finally use my macbook :)
@@pbl0_o and thank you for coming back and giving the solution!
bought a replacement keyboard and fixed my laptop that I spilled vodka on myself with this video instead of paying $400, thank you
Looks like the 40% alch didn't clean it but made it worse lol. Glad we were able to help
Dude this is literally the exact thing that I did with vodka too. Not great for cleaning. Glad to hear it worked out for you - going to have a go myself
does your mac work fine with a replaced keyboard? i am about to replace mine but have some second thoughts..
@@lizardhudson8463 how its going? u changed your keyboard?
Where did you order the replacement keyboard from? How much?
Air keyboard. This is the video I've been looking for!
At 7:40: M1 air keyboard. Covered in iced coffee.
What did you remove from the sides that you rolled up? What was that tape you used? Where do I get it. Did you use it to put under where you rolled that tape up?
Hello, how were you able to put the screws in the middle of the keyboard? when you rip off the stubs, the bottom half stays in the keyboard ?
as far as I can tell by looking at the video. he didn't put any screws in the middle of the keyboard.
hi, i remove my the touchpad to clean it and when i put it back, it doesn't click anymore(the physical click). what could be the reason? help please
hi. lapfix. I use your tutorial to replacement a keyboard in Mac air m1 bu I have some issue and many you can help. so first control key not working. and when I mont and screw backplate some keys stop working, as left shift caps lock, and f1 to f6 bu t when I unscrew the back plate only one left schift don't work. any idea
Is it possible to replace a single switch on this model? My Y key isn't working anymore.
my keyboard buttons have become loose after screen replacement ,can you tell me what could be the reason for that
great keyboard repair video!
cool video it kinda guided me through some steps i wasn’t sure about, but please fix your camera angles. most of the times half of the macbook wasn’t being shown, and i recommend if possible leaving the camera higher on your setup
no hate tho ❤
Amazing work, thank you for the video.
The rivets that hold the keyboard firm in the centre, would it be a idea to put a few spots of solder on these after the new keyboard is in to keep it seated better in the centre or is this stupid and could cause issues?
Hi , I have the same model. My device does not shutdown properly using apple menu. It just restarts. Also it does not sleep but goes to lock screen and the display keeps turning on and off every few seconds. There has been no damage to device so I cant figure out the fix. Any suggestions on what to look for? I even did clean reinstall of OS but did not work.
Spilled coffee, it worked for a day or two but I ended up using water from a spray bottle and a pressure air can to clean the sticky keys but it just made 3-4 keys stop working.
How to just remove one switch mechanism?
oh god I did everything instructed and now i have a black screen on startup. the laptop chimes and the keyboard light goes on but now i have a dead screen! please help
Is it a t1 torx used for the screws on the perimeter of the keyboard?
Oh, thanks mate, you saved my Mac from going to trash.
Your really good at your work don’t get me wrong but you don’t talk through your work which kind of makes it hard for first time repair experts
Is the A2338 similar?
a2338 is for the Macbook Pro. It will look a bit different removing the board
There's all sorts of teardown vids on the internet & has honestly saved my life (i hope so!). Would be nice tho if you can do a reasaembly vid like adhesive application after a complete teardown of m1
My question as well. There was no explanation of why tape was removed or if it was replaced. I can like and subscribe but if there is no answer to my question, then I am not sure what to do.
How much time does it takes to do it ? I'm working has a technician and was looking to see if we could do it for a client. Doesn't seems too bad ! Your video made it look easy
Another great video-thank you! I understand you used screws on the edge of the keyboard, but what did you do to attached the center of the keyboard?
Sorry for replying a month later, but for anybody else with the same question, replacing your keyboard like shown in the video won't attach it to the center like it was originally. To attach your new keyboard to the center, you need to do one more step the video mentions around 8:08.
*Make sure you have keyboard screws to replace the rivets prior to doing this. Just google "A2337 keyboard screw" and you can get 100 from AliExpress for $5.*
Once you remove the old keyboard, there are some nubs on the underside of the chassis (visible at roughly 11:45 in video.) These are the rivets used to secure the original keyboard in manufacturing. Since all of the rivet heads were ripped off when removing your old keyboard, they now do nothing except make your life harder. Each rivet plugs a hole that could be used to attach your new keyboard to the chassis with aforementioned keyboard screws. Try to pull the rivets out with something precise like some small side-cutters, or any tool that can remove them fairly delicately (AVOID FINE PLIERS.) Gently tapping a hammer on a flat head screwdriver at a 45 degree angle against each rivet works too. During removal, keep in mind that you need these rivets removed entirely, not just sheared so that they don't poke out of their hole. No matter the method, there will be a few rivets you shear. No worries, its close to impossible to remove every single rivet. Once every rivet on the chassis is removed or sheared, put in your new keyboard, and screw your keyboard in on the edges. After that, just use the keyboard screws you bought or that came with your replacement and screw them into the rivet holes you unplugged. These secure the center of the new keyboard to the chassis like the original, but better, because these aren't rivets! This means should you ever need to replace the keyboard in the future (god forbid,) you won't need to rip the keyboard out, just unscrew it and it will pop out. Once all your keyboard screws are in, you can proceed with reassembly (shown at 12:37 in video.)
If you're doing this replacement, I don't recommend you skip replacing the useless rivets with keyboard screws. If you skip this process, your new keyboard will be fully functional, but pressing keys in the center of your new keyboard will cause it to sink because there isn't anything in the center to support the keyboard under pressure.
Here is the Amazon link for keyboard inner screws if anyone is looking for them in the future:

@@aaron_swartz Thanks for this comment. Was just about to tear this one off, having second thoughts then saw this. I'll definitely look for some screws first. Hopefully they won't take too long.
@@aaron_swartz Hi, what is the name of the screwdriver that is used for the keyboard screws on the edges, and is it the same for the screws that are gonna replace the rivets?
@@aaron_swartzdoes it matter whether or not it says pro or air for the screws? Please reply
Hi, can someone tell if this still the same keyboard situation with the M2 Air?
what tool (and size) was used at 4:31?
Nice replacement video!
When a new replacement keyboard is connected, all keys work normally - except for A and D! Do you now what's wrong?
Thanks! and Check the cable connection first for any damage, then see if a usb keyboard works with those keys, if the external keyboard works no issues then you most likely have a bad replacement keyboard
Do you know if the new M1 Macbook Air, 13, 14, 16 if the keyboards can be swapped for another language set. Or no?
Swap from US English to Hebrew/Russian/etc, Mac will be used in another country
For most models, no as the return key shape may be different and won't fit the chassis. For others the connection may fit and it may work, however, the keys that are different in a similar location will register as the original keyboard's position. A good example is the: and ' keys
disappointed you didn't remove the old rivets and replace them with screws. I did a few A2337 keyboard replacements and I've tested the keyboard with the screws on the edges only and it feels a bit spongy when you press the keys. you are not the one who will be using the keyboard so I guess you probably don't care.
hi! So is it possible to replace rivets with screws? What are those screws? Are they the same as on the edge? Is there no problem in later use? You just screw them in and it is okay? Sorry for asking but I have the same issue. Hope you will help :)
You are right. The proper way is to remove the rivets and then replace them with screws. Some shops are not skilled enough but yet showcase their repair as if it is the right way to get things done.
Nice vid.
How do you unscrew the weird screw that you are unscrewing at second 4:31? It is a screw that also works as a screw holder, I dont know the technical terms.
May I confirm if you solve this problem? Could you please tell me how to do it?
where to buy that pcb?
It's already hard to take apart all the pieces,if you make the video fast is almost impossible to know what to do,i had to slow down the video
agreed
Nice job
Thanks!
Confused when you got down to the part where you take the very little screws around basically the frame of the actual old keyboard- but then you talk about the other rivet looking things that run across the key rows --- talking about being very careful on those -- then next frame you're tearing out the old keyboard ...... i assume when you put the new keyboard in the old backlight then goes on top of it and then we're good. no?
I don't think you had to replace the actual keyboard just the circuit board under it. Unless there was damage to the keys. The keys are just the physical connection to the pressure sensitive circuit board, which is the only part that would need replacing. Apple would not put all those rivets in if it was made to be removed.
They 're not separated, only the backlight is
Excellent!
What would that repair cost? I had my cat knock over a glass of soda on the keyboard of my MacBook M1 2020. I cleaned it all off immediately but a day later some of the keys are sticking. I don't know if the keycaps can be removed and cleaned under them or if the keyboard will need replaced. I'm looking for an estimate before paying to ship it in to you.
It’s a bit late but for anyone watching bring it to Apple they usually help clean or even replace key caps for free
Hello is it possible to simply switch languages with keyboard stickers? Bought one online & didn’t notice it was in Cyrillic! Oops! Thank you for your reply
Hello, there is a language input switcher in the settings. However, since the keyboard connection is configured in a way, it may not be exactly as an english qwerty. But if you switch it, just match it up with the stickers as you test each key
Why not remove all of the rivets and then replace them with screws like you do on older models?
How much is the price of Macbook air keyboard ??
Keyboard Magic Lol i was just tosee i saw til the end.
Awesome work and clear instructions.
Glad it was helpful!
Bravo, very helpfull, thank you for your job!
Hello. Just curious will small water droplets go through to the logic board or other components inside? Small water drops something like sweat. Thanks
VERY nice dude! You seems like be a very "likeble" or sympathic person. Like "you must be fun at parties" without the sarcasm. ;) However, I consider buying a used macbook with wrong keyboard layout to my gf in Ukraine. Gold or Rose-gold models are harder to find, and seems more popular. At higher price sometimes. But if I get one with U.S layout instead of Swedish or Russian layout, I can cut down costs. Then some hax to get latest Ios, and then the computer would be top notch. Like a new one for less demanding users. Assuming it is a used in mint condition.
Hey how much something like that cost?

Hey, I hope I can get help here, I don't know where else to post this, since my problem requires advanced understanding of the laptop. A little while ago spilled water all over my MBA M1, because my bottle broke in my backpack (yes, my laptop was in the backpack). Now I finally had time to open it and clean off all the corrosion cause by the water. I managed to get it to work again, at least partly. While hooked on to power it boots BUT I can't get past the password input because the keyboard doesn't work. I watched this video to better understand which connector is the keyboard one but I couldn't understand it from the video. Could you please explain it to me?
Edit: I just disassembled the entire laptop and re-hooked all of the connectors and now it seems to be working. I don't know which connector was the right one but I'm happy with the result lol
Glad you were able to get it working, congrats!
@@lapfix I have the exact same problem as TheSoroLP explained. The keyboard and the backlight both don’t work. I noticed that the trackpad cable has a branch which goes to the location where the backlight and keyboard cable are connected. Does the trackpad cable provide power to them? If that’s the case, could a damaged trackpad cable be the explanation? What do you think may be the problem?
Hey...... Actually I'm having the exact same problem with my m1 mac air. It was completely drained in water for about an hour. Now it only works while it's connected to power adaptor and external keyboard...... I wanted to know if you fixed it by yourself by disassembling all the circuit connection and reassembling them or if you replaced the battery and keyboard. Please help me out with this.
Yey thanks😊
Ive got some spongy keys due to a drink spill but they work. Is there a way to "clean them" so they are not sticky anymore? Or do I have to buy a whole new keyboard?
If the damage is only superficial you can get away with removing the keycaps without even touching the interior of the laptop.
From where I get the replacement, and how much does it coast, I have spilled some drink on it and im not sure what to do
I went to the store, and he was like” we dont actually do these kind of replacements so you will have to change the whole keyboard for 300$
Or.... you could just replace the palmrest entirely and save yourself a couple of hours. Worth it.
ありがとう。
Great video. Too bad I cannot send you my laptop.
Where can you buy a keyboard replacement from? I’m in this situation 😩
aliexpress
Finally apple made a design choice that makes sense using that battery tray and the pull tab adhesive strips so you don't damage the battery just because you need to replace or clean the keyboard. Bringing back the separate power button instead of it being integrated into the keyboard was also a great choice. As was turning 12 screws to hold down the wifi antenna into only 4 screws. Now they just have to go back to using all screws for the keyboard in future models and I will be happier fixing these steaming piles of ****. Probably only did it because they know they are fighting a losing battle against right to repair, though.
keyboard screws are P2 pentalobe screws.
Where is a good source to find a replacement keyboard?
As someone who doesn't repair often, this "tutorial" was really useless. Several steps were skipped. I almost tore plugs off flex cables during the tour because some plugs are special.
Something cool.

brilliant 👏
not something I'd do myself but glad it's doable!

Can one replace a French keyboard with a US keyboard in a MacBook Pro M1?
Probably the worst laptop in repairing point of view. Apple needs to change

hAHAHHAA apple is hilarious...they REALLY don't want you changing anything on this laptop or even opening it up. Comparethis complex keyboard replacement to something as simple as a keyboard replacement for a thinkpad. Absolutely astonished that they get away with this crap
