Not that Petrucci has never had a tasty riff....but Romeo just seemingly vomits tasty riffs. Both are monster players but if we are talking riffs.....Romeo wins hands down.

I think the vocals are the reason why the band is so underrated... you dont think? Obs: i like some vocals from them, but not severals, and I see a lot of people talking that too..

I love both bands with a passion but I like Russell Allen's voice ten times better than Labrie's , that makes the big difference to me
You do realize Symphony X has more stuff before their 'The Odyssey' album right? It would have been nice to see some of their stuff from The Divine Wings of Tragedy or New Mythology Suite.

My dream tour is seeing Dream Theater and Symphony X on the same ticket. I hope they headline a tour together in the future. But Symphony X will always be my favorite out of the two. Michael Romeo is one of my top 3 favorite players and is an influence on my playing.

I did 10 yeras ago in badalona,the best concert in my life!
They played in the same tour. Saw them in wembley arena.
Funny enough, I discovered both bands around the same time.
I think I discovered Dream Theater on my own a couple of months prior to when friends put me into SX.
I've been fans of both ever since, with Mike Portnoy being my biggest influence on drums at the time and Micheal Romeo being the same for guitar.
I was a guitarist at the time and started trying out drums when I discovered them and boosted my interest in both instruments in general but also to get better at it.
That said, the craziest thing about these two bands is within the few months my friends and I became fans of these two bands (in 2007) we saw that they were starting a tour and would be coming to our country somewhere close enough for us to go see them.
So in that same few months period I discovered them I was able to see them both live in the same evening, and it was amazing!
Even today I couldn't tell you which one of them I like better.
I love them both equally for different reasons, the reasons that make their identify unique.
Anyways, it's a great duel but I can't choose one over the other as a band overall.
But since Micheal Romeo had the biggest influence when it comes to guitar, maybe I'd say SX wins in this particular contest. If I really have to pick one.
Nevertheless, both bands are awesome in every way possible except maybe vocals.
And it's sad James LaBrie messed his vocal chords up, but I'd give the edge to Russel Allen. He's an amazing singer and frontman.
Anyways, I hope nobody is gonna take this comment the wrong way.
Again, I love them both.
Kinda like the Metallica Megadeth debate, I love them both for different reasons. And whether I give one of them the edge for any particular reason doesn't mean I dislike the other for that same reason. Both rule and it pretty much ends there.
Sorry for the rant.
The DT/SX live show happened at the right time for me and ends up being an important part of my life. Maybe I didn't express it in the best way possible, yet here it is. Take it as you will.

The first time I heard Dream Theater, it changed my musical taste. The first time I heard Symphony X, it moved me away from Dream Theater as my favorite band. The riffs are more brutal and the vocals are better with SX. I still love them both as they have left permanent impressions on me.

Michael Romeo only because Petrucci already gets the recognition he deserves. Although, Michael Romeo gets to play with Russell Allen so I suppose that's some consolation. LaBrie was amazing for one album. Russell Allen has always been a force of nature.

In terms of riffs this is not even a competition. romeo is a riff machine and rullo a far better drummer for this kind of stuff. on top of that they just have wayyy more attitude in their playing than those dt guys.
IMO symphony x's mythology suite is the perfect prog/power metal album ever made

Dream Theater was my favorite band until I discovered Symphony X in 2000, and there was no contest.

I had never really even heard of Symphony X until a few years back and even then, not much. I heard a guitar solo by Michael Romeo on a song called "on the breath of Poseidon'....Ladies and gentleman....that was a game changer for me. I really like John Petrucci...great guitarist.....but when we are talking about Michael Romeo, we are really talking about something else. He is arguably one of if not the greatest guitarist alive today. Period

I don’t think you did Dream Theater Justice… You played three riffs in a row from Images and Words and they are writing has matured plenty in the past few decades. There plenty more interesting riffs to play.
Have no clue why these two bands are compared so often. They are absolutely different at any aspect. SX even isnt progressive at all ) SX is much closer to neoclassical than to progressive, and definately SX are much closer to Metal itself

I think I might have chosen a couple of DT's more complex tracks to go against SX... Like Fall Into the Light, Home, or The Alien. The lead work that Petrucci has done in the last few years on DT projects and on his solo stuff.. absolutely other worldly.

I love DT and Petrucci but in the riff department I prefer Romeo's guitar work, some of my favorite song riffs and intros from SX are: Inferno (Unleashed the Fire), Out of the Ashes, Of Sins and Shadows, Sea of Lies, Evolution, Domination, Nevermore and Smoke and Mirrors. Michael Romeo is a beast and Russell Allen's voice is out of this world

O pasado xoves 19 de xaneiro, cumplín un dos meus soños(nunca é tarde que xa teño case 45 aniños) e foi ver e escoitar e disfrutar de Dream-Theater en Avilés en concerto...un dos días máis felices da miña vida, alí estiven durante 2 horas petrificado, absorto, chorando como un neno pequeno!!! São as duas bandas que mudaram minha vida e a forma de eu entender música.
Amo o DT demais e muitos dos álbuns são divinos, mas, têm músicas que eu não gosto, mas, em parte de marketing e investimento o DT supera.
Já o SX transcendeu, do 1° ao último álbum e todas as músicas são perfeitas e humanizadas em todos os aspectos.
Gosto muito mais de SX.
Resumindo, o DT se tornou muito mais comercial, enquanto o SX tem menos interesse em fazer fama só que têm músicas muito mais maravilhosas.
