    *Enable CC if you can't hear everything* Fun fact: this data center is so loud that most technicians wear hearing protection while at work. Obviously, that made recording audio *very* tricky. I used the best equipment I could find for the job, but if you're having a bit of trouble hearing everything, turn on CC. I did them by hand so that those of you who are hard of hearing or don't speak English as a first language can still get the most out of this episode!

      not necessarily, if they bought those mac mini in 2014, they have a very good price performance for a server, keep in mind that the mac mini barely consume energy and you are more interested in the number of cores than the speed and 4 cores per mac mini to only $ 499 vs spend only that in a 4 core xeon without counting the rest of the server parts, the problem is that you can not update it later, which if you can do in a common server, the xeon processors go down very fast, and you can buy a better one from that same model much cheaper

    That is impressive, in a way a very niche application. But since the US air force had made a supercomputer using PS3s, any case of "this machine is not supposed to be used like this" is not that unbelievable.

    • @TheRockacer22
      @TheRockacer22 6 лет назад +27

      I think the confusion occurs during the purpose of building something like this. USAF connected a ton of ps3 consoles together because they were really optimized machines that graphically computed a lot for a cheaper price than getting individual video cards and computers and having to supply boards and psu to each entity. A ps3 comes with all of that in cheap well priced confined box.
      There is absolutely not a big enough niche that require apple macs to be linked together. Nothing they do is cost effective enough for it to be used over the parts that make up the Mac minis. Like the spokesperson mentioned, these are mainly used for emulating macOS over the cloud. Any sane person would rather own a bunch of Mac minis for their company than rent cloud Mac minis. It just doesn't make sense unless these macs are being used for something they are not telling us.

    A nice but rather unnecessary achievement. As the Mac and PC computers still share the same x86/64 CPUs and therefore virtualization technology there is no reason you couldn’t use a classic 2x 28 Core xeon server. But the mac OS checks the bios and therefore you can’t. But on the PC you can use patches for vmware workstation which emulates the Mac bios and you can run the Mac OS just fine on not-mac hardware. And that patches also are available for common hypervisors like Vmware ESXi vSphere (instead of Windows + Vmware Workstation).
    The space used for two 12 C mac pros could be used for two servers with each having four (!) 28 core CPUs. So if you’d go with server hardware, you could get 224 Cores instead of 24 Cores in the same rack-space. So you can have 2 servers or 18 Mac Pros. And thanks to virtualisation you still can customize each Mac OS VM as needed regarding the core count, RAM,… No unnecessary SSDs and other stuff would have to pile up and be bought. Instead of 18 motherboards you would only have to pay for two. Instead of 18 PSUs you would only have 4 and they would be hot plugable.
    I understand the need for this, but due to the lack of Apple supporting x86/64 server hardware this Mac “server farm” is obviously the only legal way. But that hinders the growth of Apples business and the minute they ditch x86/64 CPUs in their computers, they will need a powerful ARM x86 emulation (which is still lacking because it will always be emulation and not virtualization) or a cloud service for legacy MAC OS x86/64 applications.

      @@hanniffydinn6019 I guess its because of the good air conditions in the center. Depending on where you life hardware might fail much faster, because of dust and humidity. I use pcs with dust filters as well as cleaning them regular. I can see that the design of the "new" mac pro can be a problem for consumers, to keep them clean. Not sure how difficult it is to clean them or how fast they fill up with dust, never saw one. I guess this is the reason for them to fail.

    Why would you do this?
    AFAIK the most cpus in a single mac is limited to 2 intel XEONs (not ideal cpu's for datacenter work, as Opterons tend to be faster and lower power for that kind of work.).
    For Opterons, I know of some with up to 32 cpus on one machine (military), however you would probably be looking at 4 cpu's per rack in an ordinary server/datacenter system.
    The OS architecture is not designed for this either, I would either run a pure version of Unix without the overrides apple put in place limiting the network connectivity or I would run Linux.
    No SFP/Fibre connections for the network to run at a decent speed.
    Crap performance due to heat throttling on the mac minis, imacs etc.
    I wonder what they are actually used for? I notice they did not touch on that at all, the only time I have heard of this company for anything is as a mac advertisement. I use renderfarms regularly, cloud VM systems etc. and have never heard of them.

If you have a dev machine already then you could just run MacOS inside a VM using the correct settings and get as many processors and RAM as you need, I worked up a rendering machine many years ago with 256GB of RAM & 4 CPUs. SuperMicro currently have a 2U pre-built system with up to 6TB ECC DDR 4 RAM and 4 Xeons, you could run a bunch of VM's on that sucker....now that I have seen it, I need to convince myself I don't need it....

    • @slipoch6635
      @slipoch6635 6 лет назад

      @@zadintuvas1 Yes it would be perfectly legal as long as the system was clearly stated as what it was and was not mis-represented.
      A EULA is not a law, you may breach the TERMS of the agreement, resulting in them being able to avoid giving you updates/support etc. however if you have paid for the software (as they do charge for it as a standalone) and are not selling the setup as an 'apple' device etc. then it is not in breach of international copyright laws. In Australia, if Apple tried to sue you for this (charging for people to access your VM setup) then they would be in breach of our consumer rights laws as well as our competition laws. Hell in Australia they would have to show that you had substantially damaged or altered the product to not receive a normally free update.
      The fact that Apple allow a VM to run of MacOS and iOS on a PC (as long as a mac is connected on the network, it actually runs the vm on the PC) through Visual Studio, puts them in a worse position legally as it shows that it can be run and that Apple does allow it under some circumstances.
      The actual laws in regards to EULAs are a bit odd. Some places take them as a fully legally binding document, some they are considered legal in only so far as it extends to support/updating of the product going forward from the breach. In Australia the EULA is legal as long as it does not contravene any Australian consumer laws (it does in several places), as long as it is not completely one-sided (Australian contract law), as long as the purchaser has had ample opportunity to read it prior to purchase, and as long as the EULA is written in everyday English.
      So it's complicated, but given that Apple got done for $9m (+ refund and replacement of every affected device) over the update that bricked iPhones with replacement, non-apple screens I would say Aus law is on my side here.

      Lol... You know how I know most of you haven't worked in datacentres or even small scale mainframes? It's not apple hate... I've said before in life I'm a big fan of their watch line... And I fully applauded Jobs' move on ditching macOs to unix, as well as his entry level iphone and ipod work... His people were better than Gates' people... The closed garden model failed for blackberry, and it will fail for non-Jobs apple because cook et al aren't Steve Jobs... However.... The world of servers are designed to work well and openly with everything from hvac systems to electrical panels to heavy machinery and cnc to full company networks to government security protocols that never make sense alllll the way to legacy support... It's only in current support where apple thrives, because their business model doesn't allow for "cheapest and most secure and adaptive", which is why, and I kid you not, 80%+ of servers are run on Linux... Not unix, no more sparc or sun servers, still a hefty amount of windows boxes tho... Apple went after the cool look and fashion market... Windows went educational and business... Companies are always cheap frugal jerks who don't pay up... Most use Linux... It's free, has more security than osx or windows, isn't as complicated as freebsd... And massive support... business doesn't care if they're cool, as long as you buy their shit....
      And fyi, I'm a commodore fanboy
