That's cos the songs of the 50s were a bunch of bubblegum doo-wop greasers & bobby-socks bullshit, lol. No one in the 80s wanted songs about rocking around the clock or going to Surf City (although the "2 girls for every boy" thing might have been appealing). Seriously though, there were a few 80s bands (if you count them among the "young people" of the time) who covered ye olde rocke & rolle : Mötley Crüe's cover of Jailhouse Rock from Elvis was one... I'm sure there have been a few other little gems...
