To me his finest hour is his issue of Doctor Strange. Oh, and I was a production artist in the Bullpen in the '90's, when Mike was brought in as art director. One of the joys of my career was getting to work with him on a daily basis and watch him draw. Believe me, it was an education, plus he's simply a great guy. The Bullpen at the time was composed largely of weirdos, metalheads, and assorted reprobates, so we were admittedly rather clannish and were not swift to accept anyone new into the fold, but Mike was immediately accepted because he was absolutely on our wavelength. Unlike many who worked at Marvel in those years, Mike actually gave a damn about the quality of the art.
I wonder if Golden had AD influence on that great Rogers/Austin Dr. Strange run, with its wild colors.
This and Avengers Annual 10 will always be my faves. Golden just has massive chops.
I love Michael Golden. I’m also a huge fan of the Nam.
GOLDEN GOD. Michael Golden is amazing. I've always been impressed with the cartoonish life in his characters' faces and bodies, yet his technical drawing of weapons and vehicles was amazingly tight and realistic. I loved his GI Joe work, The 'Nam, and Bucky O'Hare, all treasures of my collection!
Golden and Art Adams are like the Faith No More of comics--amazingly talented and visionary, yet they should not be blamed for all the inferior artists who followed after and cribbed their style! Golden has great depth and life to his art, most who came after do not.
The Nam when Michael Golden was on it, is a great combination of accurate hardware and cartooning, and is really well written. Definitely an underrated gem!
I have been rereading the GI Joe comics from the 80s and wow are they better than they need to be.. I dare say that they might be one of the great runs of that era. Good stuff and I for one hope that a few more classic issues of GI Joe get examined... there is a lot of love for issues #21.. but Issue #22 is another that deserves to be looked at.
I love you guys ! This was my fave comic for story and art for the longest time! Mike Golden made my dad read comics, he was a vet! Glad yall did Golden, he is an American treasure.
I love Michael Golden's work. He worked on a few issues of *House of Mystery* and what he did there was fantastic--particularly "Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow" in #259.
I bought a Bronze Age comics lot on eBay with G.I. Joe Yearbook #2 in it. Lucky me!!!
I have to echo all the praise here for Avengers Annual 10 and Dr. Strange 55, the latter with great shadow forms, uplighting, and scary occult tentacles. He did some unbelievable color work on the Star Wars fill-in he drew, really shines on the newsprint.
I have Avengers Annual 10 and was blown away by the artwork as a kid!
I was already a fan of him from his work in Micronauts, plus he was a Florida boy, so. When i saw he drew the story in addition to the cover, I snatched it up immediately. The only GI Joe comic I've ever owned. I'm still patting myself on the back for grabbing this off the rack😁
Doctor Strange #55 is also a classic Golden comic.
I remember when I got this in 86? I was 12 or so and I really appreciated Michael Golden's treatment of the real American hero.
I was a regular comic reader before GIJOE but after buying issue one at the candy store it turned me into a fanatic. GIJOE was my favorite book, and It was a dream come true to be able to draw a few issues during the tail-end of the Marvel run. This artist edition is fantastic!
We had the USS Flagg when we were kids and it was awesome. It would take a day to put together then it took up half the living room for a week before our Dad made us take it apart.
MG's work is mind blowing. I still love flipping through his stuff from early on. I met him at a comic con earlier this year and he wasn't very friendly.. Seemed more interested in collecting his $10 for his signature than chatting. But I met bigger names that day who were super nice so that made up for it.
Marvel made a poster out of this cover, I had it growing up and would pose my figures as close to this as they could get. I rebought the poster a few years ago and was able to get it signed by Golden.
I LOVE MIchael Golden. One of my favorite artists of all time and one of my favorite, if not my favorite, person to speak to at a convention (Art Adams and Brian Stelfreeze are up there too). But I was never a G I Joe fan and have never seen this before. Now I gotta get my hands on it. Thanks a lot! : )
great vid guys check out Mike Golden's Howard the Duck Magazine No5 & Doctor Strange No 55
I read GI as a kid, but never saw this issue. But that cover aren’t wax everywhere. I think I’ve seen posters and shirts. It was a super great GI Joe pic, that snake eyes pose. Man
Just bought a CGC 9.4 of this for $70 on ebay. Then a reader copy for 10. LOVE Michael Golden and wish I could hunt down his Marvel Marching Madness pinup from the 80's.
Favorite comic of all time, read it dozens of times.
Here's the kicker-- there were no October Guard toys available the time this was made. There were figures of some of the characters, but no vehicles, and even the figures didn't come out until the 90s or early 00s.
A top cartoonist to my way of thinking. Cheers!
My pinnacle Golden is... well there's three (how can you have three pinnacles, right?). Avengers Annual 10, Dr. Strange 55 and Star Wars 38. Wait, there's also Marvel Fanfare 1 and 2. Just beautiful. And any Batman Family stuff he did. Aww forget it, everything he does. lol.
Michael Golden Micronauts artist edition comes out today.
Can't forget Golden's other take with a toy license, the Micronauts! It was a BIG deal back in the day, and the main reason I wanted the toys as a kid.
Wow Ed, I thought EXACTLY that about his "Pander Bros" 80s women's boofy business cuts!
Nobody drew guns, vehicles, equipment, and assorted paraphernalia better than Michael Golden.
Another excellent episode! Jim, I agree that the influence on Todd McFarlane seems pretty unmistakable, especially the face of the cigar-chomping Oktober Guard character. (Is that Col. Brekhov?) That was my first thought, on that first page flip. All three closeups look very McFarlane. Ed, you're right about the color. It's very well done, and the 100 percent magenta is practically a signpost of the era. Whenever I see those strong pinks or real yellows in a comic, I'm immediately reminded of the Eighties. This comic is from early 1986, right in the midst of that era of color. From Dazzler to Speedball to Jubilee, those colors scream Eighties (and early Nineties).
Golden's Indiana Jones covers tell a story on a single page.
Holy S that aircraft carrier haha
Someone send Ed a GI Joe 155!
I have never read this book, so I'm stoked to check it out! I have always considered Batman Special #1 and Avengers King Size Annual #10 to by my favorite Golden comics. I hope you look at both of those soon!
this video is why i just ordered the gi joe yearbook trade off ebay.
Hellz Yeah! Another sweet issue reviewed.
I love his Rom covers. Frameworthy for sure.
Classic!
my uncle is also named michael golden. he's a professional chef.
really cool art
Well dang I was about to toss this issue, didn't know it was important
Marvel Fanfare 47 of Doctor Strange 55 for me as the best Golden books, though this is great.
You should do Micronauts
the Nam!
Marvel wikia cites Hama as writer, Golden as pencilerand inker but George Roussos as colorist. marvel.fandom.com/wiki/G.I._Joe:_Yearbook_Vol_1_2
