I interpreted this as the dad turning into a serial killer. The first encounter with death we get is act 2 where there's a dead dog and the grave for the dog is behind all of the walls, and out of sight. One of the keys is in the dog's collar. The next key is in the bird house right next to the dog, and it shows us the dead bird. At the very end of the psychiatric hospital where mom was, the ink blot tests continuously say that if you see a dead cat you're a psychopath; if you see just a regular cat then you're fine. And then the ink blots turn into the picture of a bird at slide 4, which I interpreted as referencing back to the dead birds, which we also saw the dad kill when he was a child. We even see the carcass of a much bigger animal under the floor of the grandpa's study, after the dad ruined everything -- the carcass is about the size of a dog. I think the dad had mental issues from the very beginning, and the grandparents tried to punish him horribly by sticking him in the laundry room, locking him in his room so he'd stop getting out to kill animals, and even then the grandpa tried to hide all of the carcasses by making a safe/storage in his own damn floor and drowning the key. But this ironically made it all worse -- the dad became an architect as well just to exert control over where every single person could be in his maze. Even more interestingly, the bathroom to the first house we wake up in has a duck on it, and when you open the door the black matter comes at you and then the door is forced shut; then we find the handle to the secret storage in the tub of the dad's childhood house. It makes me think that they even tried to drown the dad as a kid. And the containers the grandma prepared are all labeled so they don't forget to feed him despite being locked up. So the dad takes vengeance on the grandpa by doing the same to him and isolating him in a room, bedridden, in the last leg of his life. I think the dad must have killed the pregnant couple and police officer, and maybe even the child on the bike in the second act because we see the forest cutting the streets off, and the bike is left in front of the forest. So it's likely that the child that was killed in that act was one of the dad's first victims, and the dad had to also kill the policeman who found too much evidence/was too close to the scene. And all of these deaths constantly happening around them just makes the mom more and more scared, which is why she wants to divorce him and take us away with her.
Also, another just visually interesting thing is that we clearly die in the treehouse our father builds for us -- and when we see the tree roots in the mental hospital we say "it feels like the tree would swallow us whole if it had the chance" after commenting on how its following us everywhere. As we should be going up the floors to find our mom, the tree actually leads us down (all the holes are on the floor), until we find our mother's body in the morgue. It just visually shows that our father had a hand in making our mother go insane.

The way I interpreted the story was that you were killed by your dad. Your character comments often about never feeling hungry and are chased by the darkness closing in because as you're wandering through the acts you are in that bed in the treehouse dying.
That your father was raised abused by his dad after he spiraled into depression over the architecture failure (torturing himself with the hate mail/ect) and had psychotic tendencies as a result (the drawings, making you stay in your room like he had to stay in his, animal torture, broken dishes). Your character comments on the yelling between her parents, the broken dishes and mom drinking and having depression, as well as never wanting you to go out into the forest with him and stay home with her, indicating she was abused in the relationship and worried for your safety.
In the hospital, which is set after act 5, she wrote she was trying to protect you. She also wanted to take you in the divorce. Your father likely took you into the treehouse and killed you because of that, and the mom had to be hospitalized from the grief over it all.

Koopaling Couldn't have wrote it any better. Especially that mom didn't want to go camping (and rather read books at home to escape in different worlds) out of safety is a good point! 👍🏼

Yes, this theory works well the timing of the acts as well. Assuming they are all relative to the moment of death, Act 1 is the moment after, Act 2 is an hour later, Act 3 is in the past and Act 4 is way a year later. Although, the fact that she wakes up in her house is throwing me off - and the bedrooms in the house & tree house look the same!? So is the treehouse a metaphor?

I totally agree that the mother died *after* the player character died.
I assumed all along that the daughter committed suicide in the treehouse, though, and that's why going back there feels inevitable. You certainly get the impression all along that she was very depressed before she died (e.g. what it says when you look in the mirror).
But now that I reflect on the mom writing "I tried to protect you," I wonder if the player character WAS murdered. Although it could just mean that the mom wanted to protect her from the effects of abuse. Oof.

Is the girl you play in The Almost Gone the girl at the end of Limbo? Are The Almost Gone and Limbo related? Both protagonist children died in the surroundings of a tree house...

I think that the mc got killed in the bathroom of the house because in chapter 1 the darkness didn't let you go to the bathroom and in the beginning of chapter 4 in the news about the murder you see a small fragment of the bathroom in blood.
Also the treehouse never existed since the mc told that it was a plan without finish saying "the impossible treehouse"

I totally get what the writer was trying to do, but I didn’t feel that the ending with executed well. It was too sudden, even for a game that wants us to come up with our own theories. But, I think that’s a me thing and others will actually love the sudden open ending.

I don't think it's just your opinion. I love the open ending but the last act still felt rushed. We didn't really explore anymore but were just told the rest of it 🤷🏼‍♂️😊

This story was about transgenerational trauma, I think. It started with the narcissistic grandfather - too full of himself and his work, cheating on his wife, never seeing his own flaws, blaming others for his failures, putting on a lot of pressure on his son to fill his shoes and not letting him develop into his own person, but an extension of his dad only, that's why he was so critical of his son, and this son grew up to be a father of his own, he started off well, but couldn't free himself of the shackles placed on him by his own dad, and therefore spread the demise onto his newly founded family. His wife was suffering a lot and had to be hospitalised and drugged. Very sad, truly. It's interesting that the protagonist then points out at the end that he must travel alone from now on. Meaning he needs to leave the trauma behind and not allow it to cycle it's way down into the future generations. Breaking the cycle is the main point. It's nice that the protagonist was still able to draw out the positive memories to keep forever coz no one can take that away from him. So take the good and leave the bad behind.

In the very begging you see a telescope that’s says “ come to the tree house , you’ll be safe there”
I don’t know if it’s the dad before he murdered her (because it says ACT 1 a moment before ~a moment before she died?)
Or if it’s her mom, trying to get her to safety . can you guys help?

Incredible game, but the end Act make it a little worse. I think it could have been better by explaining something more, it feels really short and unexplained.
Anyway, the rest of the game is simply a master piece

I dont think the dad killed the main character, i actually think the dad’s generational trauma and narcissism led the mc to commit suicide. The mother died after the main character, i say this bcus the mc did not know of her mother’s death. I think she realized she killed herself because of the trauma and the constant fighting over her and she had to learn how to move on

What I interpreted from the story was the dad was abused, and probably ended up with him abusing his wife. To maybe try to save their marriage they had a child, but it brought more strain to the marriage, so they wanted a divorce. The fighting and everything ended up making the child want to end their life (i think the ending is them doing that) which caused the mother to end hers in the hospital. I also believe the father ended his life as well somewhere down the line because there was a lot of hints towards it like when you're going through his stuff the dialogue would be things like "you had nobody to talk to" or "nobody was there to help you and this was why you were suffering".

Yeah, the father was crazy, well, he became crazy. When he was a child he killed animals and thats a sign to become a psycopath in the future, it’s on the theory of psychiatry.
Most likely the father killed us.

This ended is too similar to the let down in Lost. It was such a great game but left wayyyy too many questions to be answered. Leaving it to the gamer to decide what happened is a huge cop out. Very disappointed.

The end is too quick. If you have to think a lot what was the game about i can’t call a good game really. The end sucks so much, like they became tired of their complicated story and dropped it. Of the money was finished. I’m disappointed with the end

    • @HYDROPHILPLAYS
      @HYDROPHILPLAYS  4 года назад +10

The fact that you gotta think about what it's all about is nice imo. It's just like movies that explain everything are simply not good movies. But I absolutely agree that it was too quick in the end. Like they could easily have included the information shown in the first five screens in a better way.

I'm still happy I played the game but I agree the end felt rushed. Act 5 took a fraction of the time the rest of the acts did and when I finished the game the story didn't feel fully complete.

demo. Extremely shitty port to Switch. It took my gf and I a few hours to complete the demo.
(-) navigation sucks. You're constantly fighting the controls while the puzzles are straightforward themselves. Almost no button support. Requires pixel precision. Constant repeat of messages that you can't get rid of.
(-) messages themselves are white on pink, and so tiny that they're almost unreadable. This is the poorest point and click adventure I've ever seen. Highly recommended to try to finish the demo first.
Should have stayed on mobile and / or pc.
