Russell Westbrook was one of the few All-Stars that welcomed Joker to the club during Joker's first All-Star game appearances. They are odd friends, but they respect each other's game. I think Joker knows that RW is no longer the baller of earlier days, but maybe Joker sees something in Russell that the other Nuggets don't have- a crazy intensity to compete, a bravado with grit, and a bite that will ignite his teammates. If Malone and Joker can harness Westbrook into their system, we'll be fine. To be honest, the Nuggets bench is ho-hum with little edge to them. The Nuggets need more dawgs to go into battle. Westbrook will add some fierceness that will hopefully spread to the rest of the team.

Yeap i also think its a good trade, nothing stellar but it might set fire to the bench and galvanize the team to compete harder. The Nuggets did the right thing. Even if it doesn't pay out the move was pretty decent

Westbrook is also an excellent cutter to the rim and combined with Jokic the best passer in the league will be a formidable duo. Jokic will read and anticipate those cuts unlike anyone Westbrook has ever played with before in his career. Jokic+Murray will always be the backbone of the Nuggets offense where Jamal is the primary perimeter and pull-up shooter. Jokic+Westbrook adds a different dimension to the pick n roll where Westbrook will cut and drive to the rim more. Lets also not forget Nuggets have added Dario Saric as a backup 5 who is a high IQ baller and great passer like Jokic, so that pick n roll duo can continue with the bench unit in variations of Saric+Westbrook or Saric+Murray in the non-Jokic minutes. Saric is so versatile he can also play as PF alongside AG and Jokic and is a great perimeter shooter too. I think the Nuggets have improved with these roster changes and who knows maybe Westbrook can redeem himself and prove all the naysayers wrong playing in Denver, just like Kyrie did in Dallas. I look forward to the season ahead....

Westbrook such a mixed bag. On the positive side he'll bring huge energy, toughness and leadership to the bench unit. He'll also push the pace with that unit which I think will greatly benefit Watson and some of the other bench guys who aren't skilled half court offensive players. Get em out running and see their offensive production go up. He's also a terrible shooter on a bench unit that needs a lot more shooting and scoring. If somehow Malone can get him to stop taking jumpers and just attack the rim in the half court and in transition this could work. But if he's just jacking up bad perimeter shots it's going to sink that unit.

of course Russ will fit well. if you watched the Clippers this past year, they had 4 hall-of-famers, 3 of whom were iso-ball heavy. Russ gave his spot up to ball-dominant Harden. He gave up his 4th quarter and clutch-time minutes. he became a defensive hustle player off-ball, and too often on the corner, even though his best skill set is playmaking and transition offense. he came from the toughest situation with the Lakers. with all this said, Russ was still cheering his teammates on, lifting people’s spirits. when the star players were injured, he showed up big. being in Denver with less drama, less show business ego, more dynamic playmaking, less ball-dominant iso play is going to be so much more fun for Russ

As a Lakers Fan we did not treat him well. I think the difference is in this situation is not needing to be the top 5 player on the team. Line up should be Jokic, Murray, AG, MPJ, Braun. Off the bench Russ, Sarge, Julian and P Watt. Overall losing a really good player doesn't make your team better. But being able to replace him with Depth. If off the bench you can get from Russ 10p-6a-8r, with less than 4 turnovers a game. That is valuable. Great teammate and person. Hope the great comes player out there. Good Luck Brodie

Agree completely about the defensive loss with KCP. CB a very good defender but doesn't excel at what KCP did so well--getting over screens and staying attached. After Gary Harris tailed off because of injuries and before KCP arrived Nuggets perimeter defenders routinely got hung up on screens, leaving opposing guards and wings with open shots and often exposing Jokic in space in pick and roll defense. KCP was a big key in making the Nuggets pick and roll D work. Without him I expect problems, at least initially. Westbrook doesn't address any of that. Still a big hole.

    Good intro. Good questions too.
I always liked Russ - but he's about done at this point.
Denver Nuggets, right now, are not a true contender.
Nuggets Owners (Kroenkes), GM (Booth), Front office (bunch of incompetent nepotism hires) - simply destroyed Jokic's chances to win another chip, and betrayed the Nuggets fans.
    Few weeks ago:
Josh Kroenke: "when you have the best player on the planet, you have to go for it"
Booth: "I'm the steward of Jokic's prime".
End result: Nuggets lose KCP and bring in Saric and maybe-westbrook. That's "going for it", that's "stewarding Jokic's prime".
Kroenke and Booth flat-out LIED. They even got caught lying about offering KCP an extension.
Nuggets never had a decent backup center, a decent backup handler/creator, and a backup 3&D wing (BB was a brief exception). Never. Nuggets NEVER had even a mediocre 2nd unit. Never had a real "all-star" next to Jokic either.
Last season - roster was much worse than when they won the championship, this season the roster is even worse than that.
Now - here's the piece for you guys to talk about: The reason for this debacle is that Kroenkes are preparing to sell Nuggets and are in the talks about it for about 12 months now (last 4 months talks are "productive"). Kroenkes priority is cost control, limiting liabilities and obligations, and giving the next owners "space" under the aprons. Last two seasons look pretty on the books - full arena, revenue almost doubled, brand expansion... And Kroenkes know this is the moment to sell.
Prettying the bottom line and offloading Nuggets for a huge profit. And that's the whole story.
    That's it.
BTW - don't ask me how I know this - as these talks are held in strict confidence since they started. But it's true.
I hope that Jokic's mgmt team (Raznjatovic) and Jokic himself are aware of it - I know messages were passed to them. And I hope that they trust it - and will f*k Kroenkes in their greedy a**es. By simply demanding a TRADE.
Let's see how their "bottom line" is gonna look then.
BTW - don't buy the Kroenke's/Booths BS about "Jokic requesting RW"... They're just LYING, just like they LIED (and got caught) about "giving KCP a matching offer". (KCP and his wife were honest about it and said "we didn't hear a word from the Nuggets")
I love Jokic, I liked nuggets few years back, but I can't STAND Nuggets because of their owners who are PIGS and disgusting human beings.

I think it's a mistake to view him as a Jamal Murray replacement and moreso a Jokic replacement. He can play with or without Murray. They signed Dario Saric who is a floor spacing 5, perfect for when Jokic is sitting and you are using Westbrook as your offensive engine for 16 minutes a game. I am not a huge Westbrook fan but I think but on a vet min he's a solid role player. And the fit looks a lot better viewed through this lens than the one they were looking through.

Russ can't be paired with Jamal. Christian Braun is actually a better floor spacer than Russ, shooting 38% on 2 3's a game. So, what possible advantage is there using Russ? And Russ is only going to be able to play as many minutes at age 36 as he did last year: 68 games, 22 MPG. They're going to need him to play all that time at backup point guard. In the playoffs they could use him instead of Christian Braun because Jamal will play 38+ minutes, but has Russ been good in the playoffs recently? No! Christian is a better defender, better rebounder and better jump shooter (although not good).

I don't think Westbrook fits with any team. He averaged 27 ppg with the Rockets that one year, and has dropped bad ever since. He went down to 22 ppg with the Wizards the next year. He was by far their best player, and he scored less? Since then his ppg averages have been 18, 15, 15, 11.

His scoring went down in Washington cause he became avergaes 12 assists that year too, you're just conveniently leaving that out, only reason his ppg has continued to go down is cause he isn't getting the same minutes

@@willsportz Fair point, but I don't think it's that simple. For one, he played more minutes in Wash. He was also averaging between 8.5 and 10.7 APG while scoring between 29 and 34 PPG in OKC. He's not playing 1/2 the minutes, he's playing 3/4 his old minutes, but he's scoring 1/2 or fewer points.

The Nugs are uniquely positioned to give this a try. We have had the worst bench in the NBA for many seasons now. Mainly because we haven’t had an identity on offense. Westbrook will give us the main ball handler - and there’s a chance that Nug culture makes him take like 2 less awful shots a game

You cannot accurately predict what Russell Westbrook will be if your sole claim is looking at the years where he was imprecisely used.

MPJ is a $24 million (at best and even with modern inflation) player being paid $40 million. Hadn't proved a thing other than a fragile spine prior to the contract. Since the contract has only proved he cannot hit a shot when it really matters. Can't defend when it matters, can't handle the ball. Floor spacing is kinda overrated anyway (given how these 'experts' are constantly raving about it being the be all end all) and given how open some of his shots are he can't do that either

With Saric + Westbrook + Cancar back, PWat taking a step, we are better regular season team. But we are 5 players deep in PO. Saric useless in our PO rotation (Jokic/AG 5, and you need shooters, if Saric is your best tall shooter you are in trouble). Westbrook decision making and lack of shooting make him bad player, also he looses his energy edge, everybody gives energy in PO, also he good at beating up on bad players, PO shorter rotation, tougher competition. PWat unproven, Cancar back from injury, KCP traded. Nuggets are officially 5 players deep in their play off rotation. 6-8 will be Holiday caliber players.

Going from a "no identity" second unit to a Westbrick identity second unit makes zero sense on this Denver team. His personality is bigger than his game now, he is a stretch-less point guard, his "energy" will be an odd fit, and HIS KNEES ARE DONE. This is definitely a "let's see what happens" move. In my opinion, bad decision for the money and culture by Denver.

It’s interesting to hear the guy in black shirt saying that adding RW can resolve the “stale” offence, bench scoring, adding bench identity and two man game with Jokic. And lastly he even naively believes Jokic can CHANGE the way RW play and think 🤣. All these superficial thinking pretty much suggests that he rarely watch Russ over the past 2 years other than his highlight reels. Let’s see some real FACT:
    1) RW only delivered a meagre +0.9 plus minus on a 51 win clipper team last season. That’s because of his low efficiency output on 3 pt%, missed dunks and layup. That erode a lot of the positives on the defensive end. It’s not as if he doesn’t have his chances, as he has 25% usage rate and 20 mins of play. Not sure how he can help the bench in a positive way. To say the nuggets bench can’t get any worse is patently absurd, as he clearly hasn’t seen Russ play last season.
    2) his two man game with jokic is the easiest to defend in the nba. All i need to do is to use KAT to guard Jokic and put gobert 2 feet away from the basket, REGARDLESS of where Russ is. That’s because I know Russ can’t score anywhere outside 3 feet of the basket. And the other 3 nuggets can do nothing but standing stagnant.
    3) his true identity cannot be more defined when he shoved Luka in the playoff game against the mav when the team is down 16 with 6 mins. His irresponsible act took the team completely out of the game. You could see the clip where none of his four teammates on the court step in to help defend Russ. He brings NEGATIVE energy to the team, not positive.
    4) comparing reggie Jackson and Eric Gordon with RW is ridiculous. The former two have been a role player in their entire career. Russ is a former mvp being demoted to the bench, but always believe that he can be who he used to be when he is given the chance. His objective is always to showcase himself at the expense of the team. That’s why he didn’t work out in the lakers and clippers. Either you give him the ball for 30 -35 mins for him to deliver empty stats or you get him to the bench for him to not even deliver the stats at all. Either way, nuggets cannot win against better teams, esp in the playoff as Russ will always turn out to be the X factor for his team to lose. There’s nothing called change in Russ’ mind. It has to be everyone else that has to change to fit him, but not the other way around.
    5) as for the bench identity and intensity by adding Russ, all you need to see is his shoving of Luka in the playoff last season when the team is down 16 with 6 mins to go. That classlessly irresponsible act will be the culture you are adding to. Simply put Russ today is a Dillion brooks without outside shooting.

I hope with all my heart that i am wrong...but i know who Malone is !
And i know he is more than willing to stagnant C.B carrier to get maybe 6-8 more regular season win...he already done that multiple times !
I'm really afraid how next season will look like!
And I don't believe 1% in that fairy tail that Jokić have meeting with russ and sit down talking how he should come to Denver!😄
Only thing that could happen is that someone from Denver ask him is he ok if they bring russ and he said something like "Ok,sure, whatever"...but even that i doubt!
He know that is not his job and doesn't care,he even said few times when he asked about team and player's.
