As a Dubliner, I’ve never related more to a band than these guys. I was hooked after hearing “liberty belle”. Love to hear them evolving constantly and covering new ground. Amazing work lads
I’m a child of the famine diaspora and there are words and in Grian’s lyrics that are so familiar because I’ve heard them in my family all my life. Like snippets of memory that survived generations. Even more than the Pogues, I feel like FDC are the Irish band I’ve always been waiting for.
From the U.S. but these guys are brilliant (liberty Belle was also the song that got me). So glad more people here are starting to know who they are since their sound is so refreshing. Cannot wait to hear the full album.
@@keeni5501 I absolutely have to second that evaluation. They have a sound that is reminiscent of so many amazing groups, yet they are SO different from them all.
I don't want to hear another person complain about this generations lack of good bands while these lads are kicking right here, banger after banger, bruising the walls in my heart like a hit from a baby, and underappriciated as heck. These guys are gonna unite ireland istg.
People who say that shit are willfully ignorant. We've had so much great music in the past decade. You just have to look slightly under the mainstream (aren't Fontaines basically mainstream now anyway?)
This music makes me think about my friends from childhood, the ones who have passed, how we we're all once kids. How we all went our ways. I hope they're all doing well.
We started zero contact in August after we broke up, letting go of one of the most beautiful four years of our lives. We had good closure, but things happened, as (un)expected. Today she emailed me back. During all these months the song that most fitted this love was this one. Misery made me another marked man. Each new day I get another year older. I don't know how mature we will look the next time we see each other after our breakup. I don't know what will happen. But she was my favorite for a long time. And my favorite in my 33 years of life. First of all: no expectations and no wishful thinking. Clarity and clear communication will build a wonder, they are the foundation of a relationship. For our favorites in our lives: give it your all, it's worth it.
Man this one stings right to the centre of the heart and electrifies the nervous system with a wave of nostalgia and hope, heartbreak and beauty - I'm feeling sentimental for something I can't put my finger on but I think we all share... this will likely be my favourite for a long time
Started thinking about my Mom and my Dad as I was listening to this for the first time. We may grow up, and change and evolve, but we will always hold dear those people we knew in our early years, and there's a certain romance in that. Can't wait to hear the entire LP...and see how FDC continue to evolve and grow as artists and as a band.
From the no holds barred anthem of Starburster, to this shimmering melody that still carries a typical Fontaines DC opinion, gives me great hope for the album.
I'm not comparing them to Smashing Pumpkins but similar to 1979, it takes talent to write melancholic nostalgia into a piece that makes it seem like it's been existed forever, yet still fresh and provokes butterflies every listen. Love it.
@MADCHESTERUTD-o9h Cannot believe they've been compared to Dullsville Coldplay! Talk about lazy. Agree, that's why prefaced it with not a comparison, was trying to explain that nostalgic feeling. Like the song's been in my life forever on first listen and give me goosebumps every listen.
@MADCHESTERUTD-o9h am not offended, sweet that you apologised which is entirely accepted even though not necessary. not a knob, passionate about what you love :) was great to see them at Glasto, even though it was from a sofa!
Awesome. The guitar parts and general mood remind me of some of the shimmering layers to Johnny Marr's beautiful best work (Bigmouth, & Stop Me). And the vocal sits so well in it. Great video too. And I like the way ye didn't make the song really short, and let it run on for all it's worth. Looking forward to the album, and hope to catch ye's live in Spain sometime.
Yeah there's strands of the Smiths, the Cure, even really early MBV and other late 80s jangle pop, stone roses, etc. They are continuing to tap the late 80s/90s UK/Irish alternative vein they struck with Jackie Down the Line. It's so good, fresh but nostalgic, pulling clear influence but distinctly original.
@@burieddagger8064 The Cure definitely, though maybe a little bit more of the Smiths and a bit less of The Cure. Loved this song from the moment I first heard it, but also there is something about the band that got me even if a track did not vibe with me. All their music takes me back somewhere meaningful, I watched the gig at Dublin Gaol during lockdown, it meant something

Lyrics:
Did you know I could claim the dreamer from the dream?
Make you feel everything you've never even seen
Yeah it's been a long, a long, a long, a long, a long-long
You were my favourite for a long time
Station fires and faces rearranged
You will see beauty give away to something strange
Yeah it's been a long, a long, a long, a long, a long-long
You were my favourite for a long time
Well, look who's just the newest clown
Thirty-five hours coming down
And the sun shines on new pavement
And you don't even feel it
It's a cry far from dead radios
And days spent playing football indoors
When they came to town with Thatcher
They never even wanted to know ya
Did you know, I can split the sunshine to the day?
Yeah, stick your heart with everything you say
Yeah, soon it'll be gone, be gone, be gone, be gone, be gone
You were my favourite for a long time
You were my favourite for a long time
(Favourite for a long time
Favourite for a long time
Favourite for a long time)
Did you know, sixties on the turn are often strange?
Yeah now, every time you blink you feel a change
And it's been a long, a long, a long, a long, long-long
You were my favourite for a while
Ah, it makes sense when you understand
The misery made me another man's man
And I'm always looking over my shoulder
And each new day I get another year older
Shoulder bound to the frame of a door?
Chewed into shape like a stone on the shore
But if there was lightning in me
You know who it was for
Did you know, I could claim the dreamer from the dream?
Make you feel everything you've never even seen
It's been a long, a long, a long, a long, long-long
You were my favourite for a long time
You were my favourite for a long time
You were my favourite for a long time
You were my favourite for a long time
