LYRICS: Some men need some killer weed, some men need cocaine Some men need some cactus juice, to purify the brain Some men need two women, some need alcohol Everybody needs a little something, but Lord I need it all To get my rocks off, get my rocks off Get my rocks off the mountain, and roll 'em on down the hill I may do you one time, and I may do you more I may turn you into something, that you ain't ready for I might want your body, and I might want your bread I might want your momma to come visit me instead And get my rocks off, get my rocks off Get my rocks off the mountain, and roll 'em on down the hill Sometimes I dream of chicks, to bring me ever lasting joy Sometimes I dream of animals, sometimes I dream of boys Sometimes I kill the living, sometimes I raise the dead Sometimes I say just screw it all, and crawl back into bed And get my rocks off, get my rocks off Get my rocks off the mountain, and roll 'em on down the hill
I did not know that you can play a bass solo and give a reach-around at the same time. I learn something new every day. These dudes were awesome, completely unbridled extremism. They left a stain on the bed sheets of music that just won't wash out.
I saw Dennis do something similar around the same time frame. The difference was after reaching around Jance and playing solo on the bass, he grabbed hi Strat and played a blistering solo!
Even Ray Sawyer was astounded at just how high Dennis was - yet in ecstasy at how he managed to channel it into that bass. In that single moment, Dennis inspired Yngwie Malmsteen AND 'Animal' of the Muppets. It has been said that Keith Richards can't believe that Dennis survived that performance.
They're definitely having their own Woodstock trip lol . Billy would go streaking if they'd let him . Idk what they're on. But it's killer . Love these guys 🎆
I was lucky enough to catch them as a kid, in fact, it was my first show, back in 1977-78. They were the "opening act" but everyone was there to see THEM. The headliner was "Sha-Na-Na" and half the crowd bailed after Dr Hook. They were amazing, yet lighthearted. Shel even came out and played acoustic on Sylvia's Mother. I was blown away.
It's funny: I've heard them called a country band, I've heard them called a disco band, I've heard them called a folk band, but no one ever gives them credit for the funk.
Shel Silverstein doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves for his songwriting skills. Growing up in the 80s and 90s I only knew of him as a guy who wrote a few books of children's poetry (Where The Sidewalk Ends being the most well-known of those). 30-something years later I now appreciate him as a talented songwriter - this, "Sylvia's Mother", "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and "Boy Named Sue" among many others.
I remember being 5 years old and my parents had a house full of guests over. I burst into the living room singing this. Boy..did I ever get in trouble..lol.
Wow my parents would have died right there. They were always entertaining and I always had to be on my best behavior. That's why I was usually out running the streets at 13. Lol
This is exactly what RUclips was made for. This has always been my favorite Dr Hook song, seeing this footage just re- reminds me why I love them so much.
My first listen. Loving it. A bizarre watch but great. Deffo digging deeper into their catalogue. Didn't expect this after listening to beautiful woman !
As a teenager living in S. Idaho on a Ranch...moved sprinkler pipe in the summer, picked rock, swathed hay, combined grain, baled, etc...and smoked a shitload of pot! My best friend lived with us during the summer and worked with me...and we would buy bongs, papers, ez-rollers, etc. and a shitload of albums...bought all of the Dr. Hook and Shel Silverstein, Cheech and Chong, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby shit we could get... pop a ton of popcorn, make lime koolaid and fire up the bowl...at lunch and at night...had to escape the pure crap we had to do daily! Thank god for Motocross on Sunday! Love these guys :)
Love this group, to me the best originals as they have changed a few members over the years. All totally great individuality talented men and don’t take them self’s seriously which makes the experience natural unlike nowadays. Can anyone tell me who resembles Dr Hook I don’t think so, I cant get enough of these archives on U TUBE Is there a Dr in the house of course there is... and you’ll be Hooked once you get a load of this group
I remember when I was a little kid and my parents used to listen to sloppy seconds in the car on 8-track! was exposed to dr. hook at a young age haven't been the same since! Good Times!!
I have never heard this one and have listened to it a few times now. Everyone one of them are so talented and when they are soooo high!! lol Billy's dancing reminds me of James Brown when he slides his feet and Elvis with his karate dance moves! lol Great song and entertaining...such a talented group of guys. :)
Whole F'in shit!! Never seen this before this is literally the greatest thing i ever seen! Freakiness at its APEX. If you don't appreciate this your a square. Its everything i ever dreamed they could be coming true. Just a F' freakshow. It's why they are the kings. Let it all hang out..
I was working in Radio back in the late 70's & early 80's, It was a small town station. so I thought I would play this late one night . Just for the hell of it to see if anyone listening. Guess what? the friggin phone lines almost burned up. I had so many calls some lovein it and some people wanted to lynch me
LOVED these guys since i was 5!!! sooo AWESOME 2 c this! saw them in 96 in new york--simply amazing!! even got ray's autograph!!! my friend brought her dr hook license plate & he asked 4 it & she gladly gave it 2 him--best road trip EVER!!!
Don't think so! Ray Sawyer left the Dr Hook band in 1983. The band continued until 1985 with Locorreire as the sole frontman. After the band split up, Locorreire retained ownership of the band's name. Sawyer was granted a licence to tour as "Ray Sawyer of Dr Hook" or "Dr Hook featuring Ray Sawyer". He was never Dr Hook, that was the name of the original band! Even Dennis has to have a licence to use the Dr Hook name. It's all on the internet. Check it out.
I was a starting wide receiver. My best friend was the QB. Our senior year 1974. He had a red Torino. We blasted this song (studio version) in the parking lot before we suited up for each home game. Young and stupid, but seriously good times.
kidn when I saw them in Wichita he got so weird the whole band walked off stage leaving just Shel strutting around squaking 'I'M AN EAGLE BABY! I FLY FREEE!!!!' Hysterical to say the least love these guys probably one of the best concerts of the 70s that I attended
Read the comments ... drugs ? but that does not change their performance and ppl liking it. I wonder if ppl still listen to this vid. score to-day 13.4.2017 ; 79.283. They were "good" entertainers; 7 minutes full of energy.
Historical footnote: George Cummings, the guitarist who founded and named the band, sang this and the other bass-like vocals (such as "I Got Stoned And Missed It", "Penicillin Penny", and the 2nd verse of "Cover Of The Rolling Stone") on their records and early live performances. He parted ways with the group in a somewhat acrimonious manner after a couple of years, and Billy Francis (keyboardist, and singer here) took over most of his vocals, though Ray Sawyer (eye-patch) usually sang the lower-key 2nd verse himself in concert.
@ElectricGypsy95 The band were Dennis Locorriere, Ray Sawyer, Billy Francis, Jance Garfat, Rik Elswit and John Wolters. Billy, Jance and John are sadly dead now. They were a great fun group and very talented.

Yeah I know every word of this one too but I know the words to most of there songs Thsy were the best
Was this the first time they were on the OGWT? If it is, they did a skit of a band called the BayCity Rollers which had me in tears of laughter.
I find myself coming here more often lately. Thanks for keeping Ray and my dad alive.
--Dan Francis
Your Dad was a legend!
Your Dad was amazing, had a great voice and personality
Cheers, man. RIP Billy and Ray. Legends.

Interesting band
I did not know that you can play a bass solo and give a reach-around at the same time. I learn something new every day. These dudes were awesome, completely unbridled extremism. They left a stain on the bed sheets of music that just won't wash out.
you gotta understand...that bass player was likely tripping his face off...
Nicely put lol
Omg I didn't know it either✌️
I saw Dennis do something similar around the same time frame. The difference was after reaching around Jance and playing solo on the bass, he grabbed hi Strat and played a blistering solo!

😜😂😅😍
Love it!! Wish they were all here still!!
They're definitely having their own Woodstock trip lol . Billy would go streaking if they'd let him . Idk what they're on. But it's killer . Love these guys 🎆

God. Damn. Why is this not ranked as one of the best live performances ever???
because no one knows the true wondermentz of Dr Hook and The Medicine Show...

@@dooderscoot2900 True. A live show musta been a site to see.
I was lucky enough to catch them as a kid, in fact, it was my first show, back in 1977-78. They were the "opening act" but everyone was there to see THEM. Totally agree. Really great stuff. .

Oh hell yeah , we got some cowbell. Can’t get any better than this. Never seen a more talented group and I have seen many.
It's funny: I've heard them called a country band, I've heard them called a disco band, I've heard them called a folk band, but no one ever gives them credit for the funk.

I remember being 5 years old and my parents had a house full of guests over. I burst into the living room singing this. Boy..did I ever get in trouble..lol.
TOO FUNNY!! OMG!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow my parents would have died right there. They were always entertaining and I always had to be on my best behavior. That's why I was usually out running the streets at 13. Lol
I played this at full volume in 1976 when I was a teen. My parents hated it!! Somehow we all survived. Dr. Hook you rock my world.
