The fact that the ANC has lost its absolute power grip on SA is the positive outcome of the election, they stand to lose up to 70 seats in parliament. This is not a train wreck for the country.
@gerhardreynecke3945. This can be disastrous if they make a coalition with EFF or MK, both who want the constitution changed and land grab! So I don't know why everybody thinks it is good! If the DA, VF+, PA, ACDP and other "reasonable parties" got more support, the DA could have formed a coalition government but that did not happen! Racial divide and tribalism!
They just cannot handle the concept of democracy, I know this, witnessed it, lived it, I'm South African. The hate of each other has destroyed everything good.
Where have the voters gone? The typical ANC voter would rather not vote than vote for another party.
Lots of people didn't go to vote. Where I'm staying I waited 8 hours from 11 o'clock and got out just before 6 in the night. The IEC was incompetent. It felt like they were doing it on purpose

Many people didn't bother to vote especially 1st time voters. Too many parties.
Thank you Chris for your interesting insights. 5 years ago, at my voting station, we were all digitally scanned, checked and verified. This year, those electronic surveillance toys must've been lying in a cupboard somewhere. Batteries flat, Simcards lost or something. This year they were writing our ID numbers by hand on a piece of paper... a step backwards? My voting station was messy... 6/10
There is NO doubt that this is the worst performance by the Independent ( ? ) Electoral Commission ( IEC ) in running an election ! In having reverted to hand-written; * Person-by-Person * verification due to the complete lack of IT technology support or the on-site failure of IT systems; was appalling. In being able to get its act together over these past years and then to not being able to function optimally during a known important / water-shed election; is beyond being unacceptable ! In voting in a relatively small community; it took 2 Hours to complete the process; only to find that the IEC : ID - Verification-Official looked about 18-19 Years; seemed unable to read and / or to cope with the responsibility; let alone navigate through the Voter's Role .... Having to be guided / instructed / directed by an adult standing behind her and pointing out the process ! I have no doubt that the IEC itself was a major cause to the low voter-turnout as my 2 Hours pales into insignigicance when compared to others who had to queue for up to 4-6 Hours + ! Like in our community; I am certain there were many who may have had other commitments and had to leave; or just gave up and called it quits ... ! 😡💩🪰
The voter turnout did look higher for me, but because of the IEC incompetence, the long queues after 22:00 along with people that need to work the next day, people left and didn’t bother to vote. If I had to be in a queue for such a long time, I would probably have left too. The IEC was deliberate with these delays and just as corrupt as everything else in this country.

Well done Colonel. Finally, someone who understands that both the ANC and DA are in significant decline. This is the real story of the election. Respect to you.
Indeed it is one of the big stories (also ignored by media).
In 1994 I waited for 4 hours to vote. This time I waited 90 min which is much longer than 2019 when I walked in and out. It looked like more people came to vote. 50% not voting is crazy! Imagine if everyone voted 🗳 what a difference it would make!
I waited like 60 seconds to vote.....the time it took you to vote has very little to do with the overall direction of the country....
I heard that their was a huge problem with the special votes too. 5 old age homes affected. DA Bussed them to voting stations eventually but some with health issues didn't bother to vote. The staff that were supposed to do this job simply didn't pitch.

In general lower voter participation is a nightmare for establishment parties and a ray of light for minority parties. It means that each individual vote is worth more and more motivated voters are the ones who vote.

I was astonished at the long list of parties on the ballot papers! Every man and his dog is starting his own party to cash in on whatever they can get. We need to limit the number of parties with some kind of restrictions, like higher cost to register a party or the founders/leaders of a new party must have minimum qualifications etc .
ANC / DA / MPC is the best option under the circumstances. As a DA supporter I understand that. Only hope everyone plays their part especially the ANC. Good luck to the leaders this is going to be tough! 💙

I'm not convinced that the IEC is unbiased and/or impartial. Sorry, I don't believe for one nanosecond that the organization isn't compromised in some way shape or form.

Chris - don't forget the Northern Cape. I called the province they wouldn't get outright against literally EVERYONE saying - "nah". I was proven correct. They just short at 49.3%.
They need help from a smaller party - it's quite the difference even though it's just under - Due to the dynamics of the province and the population never really "in love with the ANC" like in the Eastern Cape for instance - I can foresee an avalanche for the ANC in the Northern Cape come 2026 municipal and then especially 2029.
BUT - regarding these numbers - I heard Neil de Beer saying that these EXCLUDE the regional ballot. I'm not sure how this all works out because he said for them - their total will be double what we seeing. But it clearly doesn't apply to the top parties ie. over 500000. So we going to have to wait and see what the situation is there. It may explain the VF+.
However yes, the turnout% isn't going to change now. I expected it. People are just simply gatvol with South African politics. I stood in a queue in hot weather here in PE for 5 hours. I even almost just walked away but stuck on. But people in the queue were talking and talking. Eventually they just left (and RIGHT across the spectrum - our station is in Renaldo's ward so very diverse ANC, EFF, DA, VF+ supporters, many t-shirts. Guess what - many of them also just walked away, equal amounts I'd say so all parties suffered from this IEC messup)............. So how many more also just left. This in combination with total voter apathy ie. not even going explains this.

Vote for who? The next party will not be there for the people - only interested in the power. No, the boat have sailed and we are stranded.
The MK party will die when Zuma expires, which will hopefully be soon. Then those voters will go back to the ANC. The people did come out to vote, but many turned back when the queues were not moving because the voter verification units did not work. Some places took 20 minutes per person to verify the ID of the voter.
You're assuming that this number reflects the number of people who went to polling stations. It doesn't. People came, waited for hours, lost patience and went home.
I did not assume anything. I went to 10 polling stations, and I previously reported on what you imply.

This is South Africa, not one leader will resign. Perhaps Steenhuisen, but I doubt even that
A key issue in our developing society is the drain on high-functioning experienced personnel retiring, immigrating and being marginalised.......The experience of Steenhuisen is essential to negotiate the treacherous political waters our country will be sailing through in this new dawn election cycle.....Yes new blood for 2029 but all hands on deck at the moment..........never interrupt the enemy when they are making a fool of themselves!!
We must also remember that the turnout is 58,8% of registered voters which was 67-70% of eligible voters to start with, if I have it right? Thus the ANC result is actually less than 40% of total popular support!

As to what?
The total voter decline is just under 2.1 million from 2019. The decline in ANC and DA is due to voter shift to MK and PA.
At this moment the decline in the DA is about 300k from 2019 and this can be due to the lower total turnout. The ANC lost votes to MK in KZN and lost votes to PA in WC.
How many people out of the population were of voting age? And how many voted in total? Is this information out yet? Or do they only put it out at the end?

The IEC worked in the people that registered 68%of population. DA only party not to loose voters to MK they lost the coulerds vote to PA.
I think a lot of ANC and DA voters died due to COVID 😢

The parties only look at the percentage. Yesterday I look at the total numbers and thought what happened to all of the voters!! I don't mind if the ANC don't get the numbers but the DA must get back to the 4 million plus add new voters.
In WC there was definitely something different going on,was very long compared to previous elections, when we got after 4 hours to vote,the us the electronic systems is giving them huge issues ,i am sad that the ff+ list voters that's not the feeling i got on the ground,to me the most important part is that the ANC lost the majority vote,, the next few years will be hectic ,but it must happen ,most importantly the ANC is moer toe
I predict that the zuma fraction and Ramaphosa fraction will do what they did pre 1994 in a struggle fir power ,nothing we can do about the irregularities that happened,water under the bridge
Depends on the voting station. We were in and out in 5/10 minutes. Probably the best experience we've had in an election.
