Hi Alan I did a rail tour some years ago it was the Settle & Carlisle thunderer which was RES class 47 hauled with a rake of 10 mk2e coaches. The tour started from Kidderminster up to Carlisle via WCML had 3hrs in Carlisle and return via settle with a photo stop at ribblehead for 20 mins. We loved it the company was Rail uk very attentive with guide books available. Buffet car well stocked and food and drink variation was excellent. The only snag we had was an hour delay at Stourbridge junction due to a broken down 150 unit at cradley heath. A great crowd on board we traveled standard class with a great commentary all throughout the route with history and geography. All in all a great day out really loved it.

Did a pair of 37 up to Norwich from Swindon in standard class. We brought our own food and grabbed a Pizza Hut when we was in Norwich

In the 80s railtours were about hearing locos thrashing, standing by the window. Now it seems mostly dining trains, and what hauls the train is irrelevant because you can't hear or smell it.

Used to go in Hereford model centre every May in the noughties (its never changed other than some of the stock) when I went down to see me auntie Beryl who isn't actually my auntie, she used to buy me a loco every time I came down from Cumbria and pretended that she just found it in the loft. Class 20s, Deltics, coaches, black 5s you name it.

Here in Canada we don’t really do rail tours anymore. I have had similar experiences meeting people on our regular passenger trains though, nobody takes them to get around so the few people you do encounter often have interesting stories and I’ve met some lovely people in the Skyline lounge of the Canadian. Our Budd cars are from the late 50s, so probably just as old as some of those “heritage “ mk1s and 2s! I’ve tried the old Nightstar stock as well, though it was pretty rough at 75mph on our lousy track. My favourite Canadian route has to be train 6 from Prince Rupert to Jasper, some spectacular views of the Northern wilderness.

UK Railtours are more set up for first class guests. They do some track tours but they usually only have 2 or 3 standard coaches for the people who are their for the traction and the track. I do a lot of tours, mainly only 37s now but I have had 08s,09s,20s,37s,40s,47s,50s,56s,57s,59s,60s,66s,67s,68s,70s,73s,86s,87s,88s,90s,92s. Been pretty much everywhere and done places like ports, powerstations, sidings etc

Vintage trains with 7029 in tourist class to bath and Bristol. Food and drink is really affordable in the shop in the last coach. Less than a pound for a drink and then a few pounds for food. Got food at Bristol and it was alright. Had enough time In between.

I have been on a railtour before a few times but the stock I was in were Mk2s and the tours were steam railtours the locos I had were a Black Five first tour was in 2015 from West Brompton to Bournemouth via Guildford the tour itself was brilliant a perfect day out to Bournemouth despite it going to Swanage then the next tour was in 2018 at Christmas where I went on the trip from London Victoria to Bath Spa that was also Black five Hauled nice atmosphere, The Company was Steam Dreams Cathedrals Express with the West Coast Railways company operating the locomotives they were 45212 and 44871. Now the other tours I went on were Belmond British Pullman in the support coach with 35028 Clan Line as I am one of the volunteers who work on the loco the tours were a Surrey Hills lunch trains that they run all the time

Well where do I start? Almost always go standard class. 1st steam one was Flying Scotsman on S&C June 1994. Did the "Hoovering Druid" in April 1992 with "Glorious" and "Sir Edward Elgar" visiting Pontycummer, Blaingarw. 6024 KE11 many times. Mk1s from Cheltenham to York with Royal 67s double heading! Only 1st class was when 47841 North Star delivered herself to the West Somerset, having been restored to Green with originalheadcode box. Scratch rake in ex Virgin Mk3 FO with no lights ! Yes, done the marches a few times. I live in Dursley, so most tours are from Cam & Dursley with Pathfinder, though my last tour, I drove with my Dad 3 and a half hours to Nuneaton for a CME with 86259 & Princess Elizabeth, with an oil leak. Nearly didn't make it !

Always love a good ol' railtour. I've done two but have always wanted to do more! One was a tour I was invited on so the first class seat didn't cost what it usually would. But I once also travelled on the blue pullman in non-dining first, it was really amazing! For food, I always bring some lunch from home just in case but will use all the snacks we get given on the tour and would go for a meal at the destination if time would allow - love it!

Done plenty of railtours with my granddad, probably around 4 a year all with different companies. Been in standard class, first class and premier dining. Depending on destination usually depends on which class we travel in- usually if it's somewhere we've not been we'll go premier dining. But if you're going to somewhere such as Whitby (known for fish and chips) we'll go first class and then get fish and chips there.
Staff have been excellent on all tours we've been on and i understand what you mean regarding talking with the people you are next to for the day, most times we've had people that are very talkative.
You will find other companies that do charters that are mainly for enthusiasts, BLS etc.

I've never been on a rail tour I have seen one go through Sheffield about 6 months ago it had a 37 at the front and 57 at the back formed of a mixture of mark3s

I am a regular railtour traveler. I travel in Standard Class and purchase/bring my own food. Using both the time at the destination and the buffet. For me, railtours must have nice coaches (Mk1s!), heritage diesels (for me, 50s, 37s etc) and a good route with no faffing about in goods loops.

  • @TukayAway
    @TukayAway 2 года назад

Yes I have done a few. Always sat in standard. Steam on Mk 1s from Luton to York, Class 47 thrashed severely back home. 66s round several branch lines in London, and an HST to Severn Beach and Ebbw Vale when it was still a freight line.

I've done 2 railtours, both with SRPS (Since they're the only ones that start at Newcastle lol) and they seem to be on the cheaper end of things. Standard class is always approx £75, and first £125. You order your breakfast and dinner seperately, ie you can have breakfast or not dinner or the other way around, so you can plan that around if you're going to eat at the destination. But breakfast and dinner is approx £25 per person. I really enjoyed both of those, as I travel on them both for the trains and the days out.

Did the WCR Dalesman from Chester to Carlisle and back, via the Settle-Carlisle on the outbound. 37s and then Scots Guardsman from Hellifield. We were in standard and took snacks and plenty of booze, and had a pub lunch in Carlisle.

I will say I am jealous about the UK railfan community. Railtour basically don't exist here in the USA.
Yes we have amtrak long distance trains witch are like hotels on wheels
But except for a few lines that are more akin to HERITAGE railways IE Strasburg. The blue eagle.
The only thing I've ever think is close to UK rail tours in their frequency is The RBMN's passenger excursions and UPs Bigboy& 844 train runs.
And they are ungodly expensive. Like in the 2 to 3k dollars per person costs

Sounds a good un. I have been doing Rail Tours since 2006. Mostly steam tours. Up to Edinburgh behind an A4 several times, Green Arrow V2 up the ECML, Princess Elizabeth from New Street to Euston. I always go for Standard Class & get stuff from the buffet car. Love them & highly reccomend a trip to anyone.

Have done 2 railtours. Both times travelled in 'standard'. It was an enjoyable experience and didn't feel like it was missing anything. Staff treated us just as nice as any other coach on the train. We didn't really eat on the train and just found food at the destination, the idea of dining on a train doesn't really appeal to me personally. I suppose it depends what your going on a railtour for, I was more about just getting on the old coaches, enjoying the antiqued feeling and enjoying the sights.

Did the Aberdonian Tornado rail tour First Class from Edinburgh for a special anniversary occasion. It was very good and sounds very similar to the experience you had on the Welsh Marches. Would do more but not many visit / start in Aberdeen although as before would happily travel to Edinburgh or Glasgow for one.

My kids enjoy trains but not enough to justify paying for us all to go on a railtour so to that end I've never got to go on one yet simply due to having nobody to go with.
An ATS group on a railtour would be perfect for me and a great way to kill two birds with one stone in regards to the ATS meetups.
