I know todays monster trains make drivers and pedestrians even more impatient, but when you have a double tracked crossing there's always a chance of another train, u have to respect the tracks. Don't be stupid!. Thanks Tie.

It is amazing how many people don't understand how passing sidings, relief tracks, and multiple mainlines work. There is a RUclips of a police officer failing to check the other track after a train clears the crossing and he gets smacked! I live around frequent passenger trains, and I look both directions before crossing a track.

It just happened in our small city. A switcher was moving cars from a branch line on a siding next to the UP main line, stopped and blocking an intersection. A pedestrian decided not to wait, walked about 1,000 feet down the siding to cross in front of the waiting line switcher. They started to cross the siding and then mainline as Amtrak's Coast Starlight was coming thru town at 40mph (track speed). Tee pedestrian stepped right into the path of the oncoming train even though both the switcher and oncoming sounded their horns and yelled. Apparently the pedestrian was deaf. But I'm surprised he never bothered to look. Of course he was killed instanty. 1st Responders said it was horrific and they were really shaken up.

In the 1950's my dad, an engineer for the B&O, was running an RDC train into Baltimore Camden Station when he ran over a 10-year-old boy on a bicycle who was crossing the track as soon as a west-bound caboose cleared the crossing. My dad, running about ten mph arrived in the crossing just as that caboose cleared, striking and mortally injuring the boy.
My father cried when he learned later that evening that the boy had died.
The first, but not the last young person to be struck and killed by a locomotive my dad was running. Bad luck, or statistical likelihood?

Im sure railfanners and non railfanners hate waiting for 2 mile trains but that doesn't give you a right to skip the crossing gates. Me, my mom, and my sisters were on the way home and it was dark. A norfolk southern train nearly hit us, but the crossing gates were going down so it wasnt there fault. Literally right after that my mom stopped to let me watch it go by. Stay safe on or by the high iron 👍🏾

Yep, that bicyclist was damn lucky the second train didn't depart a minute earlier.
But sometimes railroads need to be better neighbors. Running gargantuan trains that can tie up a crossing for twenty or thirty minutes at a time depending on speed, double that if there is a second or third train, might be great for their bottom line -- but lots of folks cannot afford to burn that kind of time waiting at a crossing, and often there are no practicable alternatives. Not saying it's ever smart to run the gate -- because it's not -- but is it reasonable to make the whole world stop so the railroad can maximize its profits?
Railroads need to make a sacrifice here and there for the sake of public safety and convenience -- shorten their trains in certain locations, space them to ensure only one train at a time uses the crossing, maybe impose minimum speeds -- and if all else fails help to fund an overpass or underpass.
Tell me why any of this is unreasonable.
