I was just talking to another clarinetist about this. I'm a clarinetist and chemist so I find this very cool. For those interested, the chemical reaction taking place is turning silver sulfide (Ag2S) responsible for the black look back to its original silver (Ag) coating by transferring the sulfur to the aluminum in the form of Aluminum sulfide (Al2S3).
Meanwhile, I am trying my best to GET my Optimum ligature tarnished, so that it does not scream 'silver' on my Kessler Midnight Edition... I got a few mouthpieces to try out this month, thanks for the tip to put them all in one bag with the ligature!
I say "don't do it!" Every time you do this, you strip away oxidized silver plate and expose a fresh layer of silver plate to be oxidized. This method doesn't protect the silver plate, it just promotes more oxidation. A quality polish such as Haggerty's will help protect silver from tarnishing. So, I say keep silver from tarnishing in the first place using 3M silver strips and using a quality silver polish.
A year ago I was playing duets with you virtually and now I'm watching how to cook a ligature.
The editing is so good!

you`re now one of my favourite internet persons
I already know about this, but giving it a like and a comment because this needs to be more well known. Great video as always!
Another brilliant video Micheal!
style man, style. and yeah. editing. amazing. Hi K.
Thank you my brother
Do you have a tip for what to do when the mouthpiece is turning gray?
thank you for the video, very helpful! One question, why do we need to line the bowl with foil? Can we just use a stone or metal bowl directly?
Is it useful for the yellow Saxophone ligatures?

There is a black optimum ligature coming soon...
Lmao(*゚▽゚*)
Does this work on tarnish that is on gold plate as well?
I would also like to know this
Can you please play Contra Alto? Just once-I am new to Contra Alto a
Will it damage the sound?
THANK YOU I NEEDED THIS
hi
@@DatDangBoy Hi
how about the golden optimum for sax? ;c
Does It work with tarnished gold plated ligatures as well?
No
Nice video! Please tell me, I'd like to know the name of the work & the composer of that wonderful music from your video.
When you say polishing cloth, do you mean a microfiber to clean it up, or do you mean a true polishing cloth for silver with abrasives?
Microfiber does the trick. If you need to use a silver polishing cloth, you can. Sometimes severe tarnish needs a little elbow grease.
God Bless U, it Works!!!
Thank you!!!!!!!
What did I learn? I'm going the opposite direction and using a case load of mouthpieces to turn my buffet bass black like the Selmer one :-)
Good luck, key plating is MUCH more resistant to oxydation than ligatures that have a very thin silver coating.
you can also use silver polish
Instead of baking soda you can use table salt as well!
Now all I need is a silver ligature
You guys are so cute... ha ha
Fantastic:-)
what is the name of the sound
What about tarnished keys on a clarinet?!
Be careful -- this method can dissolve glue on corks, and it will kill your pads. For keys, I'd go with a treated silver polish cloth
this is the moment earspasm became heisenburg
That intro😂🤣
or you could just use toothpaste on a qtip or tissue in 20 seconds no boiling or box of soda needed
