  • Bagh Print is a captivating art form from Madhya Pradesh, India, renowned for its hand-block printed textiles. Here's a glimpse into its origin, history, and a fascinating lesser-known fact:
    Origin and History:
The exact origin of Bagh print remains shrouded in mystery, possibly dating back over 1,000 years.
    Two popular theories exist:
The craft might have arrived with settlers from Jawad in Madhya Pradesh or printers from Rajasthan.
Another theory suggests the present practitioners, the Muslim Khatri community, brought the art from Larkana in Sindh, Pakistan (known for Ajrak block printing) around 400 years ago.
The name "Bagh" comes from the village of Bagh, situated on the banks of the Bagh River, where the craft flourishes.
    Traditional Techniques:
Bagh print utilizes hand-carved wooden blocks to create intricate patterns. Some blocks are believed to be 200-300 years old, meticulously preserved and passed down through generations.
Natural dyes, primarily red and black derived from vegetables, are used to create the prints on a white fabric background.
The unique softness of Bagh fabric is attributed to repeated washes in the Baghini River. The river's mineral-rich water acts as a natural cleanser and dye fixative.
    Unknown Fact:
Bagh prints were not always known by their current name. They were earlier called 'Thappa Chapai' (meaning 'block printing') or 'Alizarine Print' (referring to the natural dye used).
    Timeless Appeal:
Bagh print continues to captivate with its geometric, paisley, and floral motifs. The eco-friendly process, vibrant colors, and soft textures make Bagh textiles a treasured element in Indian textiles and a symbol of cultural heritage.
