    TOP GUN FOREVER!!!! This was and is one of the best movies ever made.... I was fortunate to be in the United States Navy at the time and was launching and recovering jets on the flight deck of the USS Ranger CV-61 when the film was produced.... I got to meet Tom Cruise, work with him and some of the crew during some of the filming and actually got to serve the crew dinner in the Officers mess... my crew mates and I had no idea at the time the Movie Top Gun was going to be such a big hit.... it was fun participating in a small way in the film and we all have fond memories of that special time in our careers.... Its fun to watch the movie with my 8 year old daughter and my wife to show them what we did on the flight deck to launch these fighter jets into the air and bringing them safely back the ship for 8 years of Active Duty and traveling all over the world with the USS Ranger... and in the movie and how Dada served the country when I was in my early 20's.... I had a great time in the Navy... its one of the proudest times of my life.... Now its being a good Husband and Father to my little girl and our twin boys Barrett and Garrett call signs "Maverick and Goose" to all my crew mates on the USS Ranger... love you guys!!! GO TOP GUN 2

    TOP GUN 2 has released and the sequel did it right.
    It doesn't feel forced with much of the action being practical and watching in theatres, I havent felt goosebumps for a movie in a while and this movie did it!!
    I'm sure this movie will create a whole new geneartion of aviation heads.

    This video only reinforces my contention that "Top Gun" is one of the most underrated movies of all time. People love to tease it, but it's great. The pace, the emotion, the cinematography, the acting, and the music...my god the music. It is all epic... a true classic.

    Note on the "one missile" thing:
    Not only was the footage tricked with editing, but the SFX used to simulate it was so good that the DoD almost launched an investigation into how more missles were used than what was originally authorized.
    Tony Scott and his team had to show how all of it was done.

    The sex scene between Cruise and McGillis was also a reshoot. That's why it's in silhouette, so you don't notice Kelly's different hair color. Allegedly, the song Take My Breath Away by Berlin was so passionate that it made the first shoot didn't do the song justice, so they wanted to make a more passionate scene to match the score.
    Also, the US Navy was upset that some of the aerial shots were not supplied by them and sanctioned for the filmmakers to use. It turns out that some shots were done using models on sticks, but were done so realistically that the Navy thought that Scott somehow obtained illegal footage.

      Not to mention the Department of Navy did a preliminarily investigation to determine whether or not additional missiles were fired (The effect team were so good that the Department of Navy freaked out). The XO of NAS Fallon, Nevada could have lost his job had that been the case. NAS Fallon supplied Hollywood with the planes and pilots for all aerial sequences (Except for some of the sequences with the USS Enterprise and NAS Miramar).

    Best compliment on his acting Tom Cruise has ever received:
    "I've moved into a new apartment and I'm remodeling it. And it's a funny thing, the movies. The contractor was there yesterday with his young son, and I was showing him some models of the F-14 fighter, because he'd seen the movie and he really liked it. And the contractor told me that after they went home, the kid said he'd really like to meet that Maverick guy. And the contractor said, 'That was him -- that was Tom Cruise. He was the guy who played Maverick.'
    "And the kid said, 'Naw, Dad. Maverick's cool.' "
    This excerpt is taken from a 1986 interview between Roger Ebert and Tom Cruise

    We lived 10 minutes from N.A.S. Miramar (now Marine Corps Air Station Miramar). Someone once bought our son a toy jet for his third birthday. He studied it for a moment & a friend, who had served on a couple of carriers, including the USS Enterprise, swung him into his arms & carried him outside where they happily stood, toy jet in hand, watching the real jets fly above. We opened our home to many Naval & Marine personnel over the years. Most were far from home & longed for a home-cooked meal & lots of laughs, in a family setting, to lessen their homesickness. If they were short of cash, they could call their families also & their Moms (usually) would then talk to us, to check if they really were eating enough :) & making sure that they really were okay. Some of the men & women who sat around around our table paid the ultimate price.....we'll never forget them.

    I don't get it: how come those two guys wrote the screenplay, which the director then shot. But then after shooting, the resulting footage had 'no plot', and they had to cobble one together in post? What was the screenplay? 'dudes fly planes, take tops off, THE END'?

    • @linkxsc
      @linkxsc 7 лет назад +29

      While it's been a year since oyu asked this. The actual film as far as Maverick getting the girl, going to top gun, and the fact that there woudl be some air battles were planned out. However all the air combat scenes kinda had to be made up with dialog after the fact. They already had footage of planes flying around, but it's not like they had planned out sequences of maneuvers and how the fights should be flown.
      All of that work was done by the editing team, and the actors then dubbed the banter that they did in the air after it was figured out. There's a whole video about it somewhere actually made by 1 of the editors, also touches quite a bit on the special effects work they did for the planes that got shot and whatnot. Was real interesting, I'll see if I can't find it again.

      There are plenty of examples of movies that are about nothing. Lost in Translation. Reservoir Dogs. American Graffiti. Gravity. The big Lebowski. (That list comes from IMDB. Don’t shoot me.). So to write a jet movie with no real plot line but great imagery and a great soundtrack would have been marketable. Thankfully, they at least caught it before they shipped it to theatres.

    • @hugothepoet
      @hugothepoet 2 года назад

      Wow, five years. Ok let me refresh my memory.
      The point I was making was praise for the movie that resulted, and doubt that it really had "no plot", as the video stated. It's actually harder to write a screen play with no plot or at least get one green lit.
      How would the crew or actors have any idea what the characters were discussing, or motivated by, or moving towards in each scene, if there was "no plot"? It's highly implausible. And then to be able to create a plot out of total chaos, just by editing, is less plausible still. It would be a miracle to get anything even remotely logical from that process - it would be below "The Room" standard. But Top Gun is an excellent movie.
      Much more likely is that "there were some plot holes in the screenplay and footage, which the editors managed to fill by using creativity after shooting". That I can believe.

    The best part was the first 5 minutes. My dad was in the Navy (retired after 20) and it was cool to see the actual job he did when he was on the flight during launches. The rest was cool jets with a lot of “that’s not what happens”. I was in the Air Force and I’m pretty sure all the branches do the same. The pilots go home after flying or training, or to their hotel or barracks if not at their assigned base. But the music was cool.

    They dont say that most of the Tomcat scenes were flown by Captain Don Bentley, USN. He was my dad's commander in the 1972 Blue Angels when they flew the F-4J Phantom II. Don Bentley ejected in winter training in NAF El Centro, CA in Jan 1973 hurting his back, so former Blues solo LCdr Skip Umpsted took over and was killed on an arrival show when he collided with Capt Mike Murphy, USMC at NAS Lakhurst, NJ. Both pilots were killed prompting the Blue Angels to transition to the A-4F Skyhawk the next season.

    Here's a bonus thing YOU didn't know! I served on the USS Enterprise (the Navy aircraft carrier they filmed on). Some of the old dogs on board told stories about the filming, primarily about how Tom Cruise was a MASSIVE prima donna. The sailors took to messing with him, as sailors have done throughout time to the uptight and overly serious. The most epic example was during the scene when Maverick was holding Goose's dog tags at the edge of the hanger bay, prior to throwing them in the water. They had to film this over and over, due to sailors off screen shouting obscenities and/or throwing beer cans or other garbage across the shot line. Cruise was going increasingly ballistic, and they eventually had to clear the entire hanger to get the shot!!

This video happened to focus on one scene that caused me to notice something I never knew about the film before. As unbelievable as it seems, until this very moment, I never realized that acting legend Tim Robbins played Merlin.

    I got to hang out on the set one day, July 1985 when they filmed the shower and locker room scenes inside the old Mission Beach Plunge back when Belmont Park was an abandoned amusement park (now restored). I was sitting on a bench behind where they set up the lockers and Tom Cruise came in and sat right next to me with a ghetto blaster and a cigar. He set the stereo on the ground and started playing a tape of Simon and Garfunkle's live version of "The Sound of Silence". I dared to actually speak and without looking at him, mentioned that I really like the live version of that song better." From my peripheral view I saw him roll his head over to give me a real icy stare. AND you can see pages they used from my scrap book as filler for the bulletin board in the back ground, upper right. Earlier in the day I ate at the catering table with some of the cast like Anthony Edwards and Val Kilmer. I saw Rick Rossovich standing naked at the door of his trailer (I came around a corner and surprised him but he didn't seem to care). That man is blessed!

    • @gapratt4955
      @gapratt4955 6 лет назад +20

      That would have been Art Scholl. Arthur Everett Scholl (December 24, 1931 - September 16, 1985) was an American aerobatic pilot, aerial cameraman, flight instructor and educator based in Southern California. He died during the filming of Top Gun when his Pitts S-2 camera plane failed to recover from a flat spin and plunged into the Pacific Ocean. Scholl, 53,[1] had entered the spin intentionally in order to capture it on film using onboard cameras. Observers watched the plane continue to spin as it descended past the planned recovery altitude. Scholl's last words over the radio were "I have a problem - I have a real problem", after which the plane impacted the ocean about five miles off the coast, near Carlsbad, California. The exact cause of the crash was never determined. Neither the aircraft nor Scholl's body were ever recovered.

    Here's another bonus thing: the Soviet "MiG-28s" in the movie don't exist; MiG uses odd numbers so there is a MiG-27 and a MiG-29, but no MiG-28. The faux-MiGs appear to be F-5 Tigers which were commonly used as enemy aircraft in mock dogfights back in the 1980s (maybe still today?).
    I'll take F-5s in "Top Gun" over the F-4 Phantoms pretending to be MiG-29s in one of the "Iron Eagle" movies any day.
    FWIW "MiG" is means the plane was designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau.

    • @jwilder47
      @jwilder47 8 лет назад

      Yeah, the "MiGs" were provided by the real Top Gun school for the film, although in service they were painted in cammo schemes like the A-4s used by the instructors in the film, not black.
      Bonus fact: they didn't just reuse the same missile launch footage, they used it four times, flipped twice, even though the F-14 only carries two Sidewinder missiles. On top of that, even though the real Top Gun teaches up close dogfighting tactics and aerial gunnery, Maverick and Iceman never use their guns, either in the mock fights or in the dogfight at the end.

    If you look behind Cruise & Co. while they are sitting in their seats,right behind their left shoulder, you will see a gold or brass colored knob. This is called a "star wheel". It is a mechanical device that unlocks the ejection seat to the ejection gun. It is only used when removing the seat from the aircraft. when the seat is put back in, the seat slides down the gun rails, and once it is down all the way, the star wheel is removed. Now the seat is locked to the gun. If the star wheels were installed during flight, there is no way that the seat would not come loose from the ejection gun. If they tried to eject, they'd be screwed.

    Here is another thing you (probably) didn't know. The F-14 Tomcat has wings that can be moved from fully streamlined swept back for fast flight (aka combat/chase) to extended for "slow" flight (aka landing) and in between. You can see extended wings at 1:43 and swept back wings at 5:30 in this RUclips video. In the movie there are chase scenes in which Maverick's Tomcat's wings go from extended to swept and back again waaaay too quickly. Couldn't/wouldn't happen. Always bothered me.

    Two other quick facts:
    - This film was essentially "free" advertisement for the Navy- they had recruitment booths set up outside theaters were the movie played
    - Partial spoilers, but come on, everyone here has seen this movie- the film is dedicated to stunt/chase plane pilot Art Scholl, who was attempting to film a flat spin from his Pitt S-2 biplane, for footage for Maverick and Goose's accident. Art was unable to recover from the spin, and he crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Neither his plane nor his body were ever found.

    New movie can't and will not li ve up to the expectations, as we have so fond memories of this 80s F-14 young Cruise type of movie.
    There is no TopGun in todays world also the air combat isn't there anymore really.. And I bet if they'de make a sequel today it would be all cheap with computer effects and they would fly on the ugliest planes were made, the F-35 space ships.
    It would ruin the original film's title, if they choose to do it, then they should at least name it something else than TopGun.
    Look how GhostBusters got ruined now with that crappy reboot. I mean they destrooyed the name -.-
