So true. The deeper you delve into filmmaking the more you realise why it's so difficult. It's because expressing yourself honestly is one of the hardest things to do in life.
It’s always good to listen to Socrates. Thank you for bringing Socrates to us. He’s the smartest man I’ve listened to in a long time. Good on you for staying with your role as interviewer and not just being stunned into ga-ga mode at the wisdom he shares.
This channel FILM COURAGE is so amazing, thanks for all the hugely valuable videos, I benefit from all of the ones I have watched, this one is fantastic it speaks the truth that in order to write my book requires being totally honest, vurnerable, authentic and sharing my story in order for the reader to experience paradigm shifts that will enrich their lives forever, thanks once again
The best description I've heard of an authentically told story's purpose: to give the receiver an experience of the story (rather than teller sharing THEIR experience). That is so clarifying and helpful.
This video and the 2 hour version are so inspiring as a filmmaker!! Thank you so much Film courage. And Mr. Travis is so awesome! I would love to meet him someday. I love the line - "Stories are gifts you as a storyteller are giving to the world." I come back to these video again and again. Thanks a lot FC ☺️
Expressing a proud, sugar-coated version of yourself is easy; showing people who you ARE, with all your flaws, talents, shortcomings and strengths, is far more difficult. People aren't willing to be as honest as they often think.
Thank U Film Courage!! I need to view allll of his interviews,, for his instructions are golden....Thank u Mr. Travis for sharing your knowledge,, that will help some of us go on to write great scripts, or books.
I love what Mark teaches in these videos! I am an actor in the beginning stages of study and research. Self teaching or preparation before the leap. Watching and more importantly listening to these lessons is an incredible help to me. Thank you to Mark and the interviewer! 👌🎥
Excellent discussion on gifting the audience by getting out of the way of the character and the story so that the audience members can interact to understand something about themselves. True for every performance genre.
Im a novelist. but i find that much of screenwriting advice is universal or some at least translates well into novel writing as well. I think novelists can learn a lot from screenwriting especially dialogue you guys are really good at that stuff. Thanks for putting up these videos Film Courage :)
Excellent ! Was able to identify and articulate a lot of concepts that I was having a great deal of trouble getting my head around. Will be back to his (and this) website !
There's something about entering this long dark tunnel of screenwriting and coming out a more in tune human being. I'm struggling with it now because Im just starting, but when I hear what you say about honesty, in self expression, I can't help but think that what we do is important. Bruce Lee says the exact same thing, but about martial arts. soundcloud.com/dreaminginthevoid/bruce-lee-on-self-expression. And I can't help but find that super intriguing.
Omar, you are so right about Bruce Lee. An amazing artist and storyteller. Join our mailing list at www.markwtravis.com and let us know if we can help you with your storytelling. That's what we are here for.
I'm going through my own Travis method: I plan to spend the next year making stories about my childhood and then transitioning into short films after that
Yes, Staw Berry, time to get out of the way of the story that is inside you. Let out. Don't try to control it. Let it live and breathe on it's own. You'll be amazed.
As an actor, how could I implement the interrogation process? Is there something I could do on my own when others don't know about this? If the director doesn't know about it or how to do it (it's also my first time hearing about it myself as well), how to direct myself? When the director is still talking to me, the actor, and not the character. I really want to live as my character in the moment. Wish someone directed me like this. Really want to get myself out of the way.
This is the exact opposite of acting. Making actors feel terrible, angry, jealous, resentful, etc, on stage is not building sympathy with the character but forcing us to watch people hurting onstage. Is some people may enjoy watching this, but there's no skill and no performance in it.

So true and yet expressing ourselves honestly has many benefits to others and ourselves
I know this feeling.
And I agree it only benefits us

Mr Travis is brilliant at what he does and does a great job of explaining it. I hang on every word

Expressing ones self honestly has been quite difficult. i guess i have to stop trying and just do that.
Thank you.
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Time to get out of the way and write my story! ( 0 v 0)

Truly revelationary

LOL Since when has Hollywood told a true story? "Based on a true story", meaning dramatizing every scene and character. Nothing but two hours of BS.
