Everything, including common plants, is actualy pretty big in this game. It's playable in VR and everything look so big and scary, even the smallest enemies. It's because everything is big that everything look small.
This is actually accurate to the lore. Not many people know this but people theorize that the aurora crashed on a giant hole, (like the one we see in the video) that is the entrance to where all the reapers live. The ones we see around the aurora are just babies. While the adults are VERY much bigger.
There's sand around it. Main reason people think there is a hole is because reapers are found in the lava zone. They have to wonder way too far down the list river to get there. So there was likely a hole (a massive lava tube or the original crater) that connected straight to where the reapers were, and where the Aurora now is.
@@charles3840 Not sure how many people know this, but as a very early adapter of Subnautica there used to be a hole in front of the aurora that would take you straight down to Lost River-ish depth!
It also makes sense as I think I read in game or on the wiki that sea dragon leviathans would eat reapers which would have to be near them or easily accessible.

Well, I get within visual range of the arch, when I see that blocking my path are 3 Ampeels. So I start diving down and literally half a second later 55 meters of Reaper Leviathan goes screaming over my head (again literally) and attacks the 3 Ampeels, killing and eating one of them, and I am sitting there, happy I had taken a dump BEFORE playing, watching this scene play out when the "30 seconds of oxygen remaining" warning comes on, I book it to the Cyclops, barely get in then drove back to where my P.R.A.W.N was left. The Reaper from that point on was driven to prey on the Ampeels in that area.
