The MoonSwatch brought me to watches. I wasn’t interested in the hobby until I heard the buzz around this collaboration. I never bought one, but Teddy’s channel (and others) intrigued me; and about six months later I ended up getting a pristine 2017 Seiko SBGA011 “Snowflake” as my first watch. Crazy to think that the MoonSwatch was the domino that set it all in motion. Thanks Teddy!

I bought a Jupiter Moonswatch last week in Lyon, most of them were available in the Swatch Boutique (the Moon and Mercury were not), and apparently they receive new ones everyday, but not in big quantity, which means you have to go to the store when it opens to be sure to have all the models available. I didn't had to wait and I was the only one in the store ! (it was 2 pm).
I 100% agree with you on the expectation philosophy : i loved the idea of this collaboration, and I know it's not a watch I will cherish as a treasure. I love my Jupiter Moonswatch, i probably will never own an Omega because I'm too poor and the price will always be too ridiculously high for my lifestyle, so I'm glad to own this one, as a kind of tribute (and because i think the colors and design are pretty cool). BUT i wouldn't have waited in line for it, and i wouldn't have been angry if it hadn't been available.

I don't think Swatch will be able to catch the hype again like this. It was both genius and baffling how they handled it. A really fun part was debating with friends which colour combinations you liked/wanted. It was a bit of frivolity in the watch world, which does have a reputation as snobby and elitist.

You know i thought this was brilliant. Swatch was a pop culture icon when i was a kid. Everyone had at least two with multiple straps. Those same kids (i.e. myself) are now adults and the brand that got us into watches recognizes it and now introduces that same fun vibe in a grown up version. Then they botched it. I was all in on it. This could have launched the Swatch group into the stratosphere. You are exactly right. Brilliant idea, embarrassing execution.

I still love the concept behind the Moonswatch, precisely for the reasons you stated. It was a BRILLIANT stroke of genius in serving as a entry into the world of horological for those who would never consider a traditional watch. And I know of at least one person that this watch led to an actual Speedy.
But is it too late to recover from the fiasco? Personally, I think it is. It was already bad enough that it’s been a Boutique-only piece for all this time, but even during my trip to Switzerland last month, it’s STILL unavailable. That has killed it off in the minds of all but the most diehard fans, and it’s a shame that they continue to let it go that way.

Working at a Swatch Boutique that carries MoonSwatches and I can see both sides. Now I can't speak for every store but Swatch is a little on edge about the whole moonswatch thing, to the point where they'd prefer if employees can wait to purchase on a later date (probably when it becomes available online honestly). In some ways yes it's an affordable watch made by omega in conjunction with Swatch but the most important thing is that it's a Swatch first and foremost, there's a reason why they're not available for purchase at more "higher end of the spectrum" stores. Swatch is meant to be affordable and meant to be fun, they were never meant to be overly analyzed in minute detail. Just a fun watch that you can put on a lazy afternoon that celebrates some memories that you maybe had with "Canada Day" or something. Now yes I know that there is a lot more affordable alternatives than Swatch but you're not buying a watch at swatch for a watch, you're buying something that makes you happy that tells the time.
Controversial Opinion: It reminds like a Casio calculator watch (CA-53W), You don't buy it because it's the best looking watch/the most prestigious watch, in my opinion at least you get it because it's fun and you can do some fun stuff with it.

Teddy: Being a university student on a budget I bought two of these. A pink Venus for myself and the khaki Jupiter as a birthday gift for my male Australian cousin who is an academic and drives a Ferrari. I bought two wrist straps from Amazon, a white leather with buckle for my pink Venus and a dark brown crocodile imprint leather with buckle for my Aussie cousin to replace the original Velcro straps these watches came in. The Amazon leather straps both came with tools so I can remove and replace the straps myself easily. The crocodile leather strap truly elevated the appearance of the Omega Moonswatch Jupiter and gave it a luxurious sportier feel…my cousin loves it like crazy and told me over the phone how he shows it off to his hypercar driving colleagues who all drooled over it because they all heard how difficult it was to obtain one and now HE has one on his wrist. Two of them even offered ten thousand Australian dollars to buy it off him, but he refused saying it was a birthday gift from his kid cousin overseas. The distribution model was certainly a pain point as you say. I became as much as resentful that this product was kept at such a distance with little hope of me accessing it locally. Months passed and I'd assumed I was over the whole affair but I would see one here or there on social media and I still liked the concept. I don't travel often but I happened to be in Dallas visiting family and snagged the last Mars the Swatch boutique there had that day. It wasn't what I expected even if I knew it would be feel like plastic, but I enjoy it. I would pay the price again given the opportunity. Teddy,
Thank you for your creative content. I think you summed up this product quite well. Ultimately, I believe that Omega as a brand will come out ok because many people that might not have thought about purchasing a chronograph, (Speedmaster Professional specifically), and are now thinking about purchasing one. If more people buy an actual Omega Speedmaster because of brand awareness due to a "Moon x Swatch" marketing campaign, it would most likely be considered a successful marketing strategy in the long run.

I was born in '66 so I was in the right place and right time for the the Swatch phenom in the 80s...I think I had 3 of them. I have 2 right now I've gotten in the past few years. I got a Speedmaster in the early 90s and have loved the watch ever since. So I was excited about this collaboration. I was also disappointed how hard it would be for someone in Cleveland Ohio to get one easily. I was recently in NYC visiting my son and DIL so I dragged my wife to Times Square and got Earth and Jupiter. The next night on Fifth Avenue I tried to get another of the ones I want first [Mercury, Moon, Neptune] but they only had Sun and Venus. The following day we were at WTC and my son waited in line with me until Swatch opened. He got a Jupiter for himself and bought me Mars. For me, this watch has been nothing but a convergence of things I have loved since the 80s/90s..it also got my wife more interested in learning about my watch hobby, and I wouldn't trade anything for the time I spent in line with my son hanging out. I still plan to eventually get all of them.

FWIW, I was in Strasbourg, FR last week and saw the MoonSwatch display while walking past the Swatch boutique. In the 5 min I walked in the door and took a look around they literally sold SIX MoonSwatches😳. I enquirer about availability and they had almost all in stock with the exception of Neptune and Saturn. I was definitely interested in one since the drop and I ended up buying a Pluto model. I’m really loving it! Definitely a cool way to commemorate a trip while adding an interesting watch to my collection.

I think that Nick Hayek's announcement that the Moonswatch would not be made available online contrary to initial assurances ostensibly to enhance the experience of obtaining the watch exhibited contempt for Swatch Group's customers and was a major blunder. I was interested in getting one as a novelty piece. Now I have a very negative impression of Swatch Group, and have no interest in getting a Moonswatch. I also was planning on getting a Speedmaster this year to beat the rapidly increasing prices, but instead got a Zenith Chronomaster. To me, Swatch's handling of the Moonswatch release is a example that sometimes too much success is a prelude for failure.

I LOVE the moon swatch. I have been trying to get one by calling the stores (two where I live) in the morning and afternoons..just missed the delivery the other day! They still sell out as soon as they enter the store. I still think it was “a stroke of genius” from a marketing perspective. The OMEGA Speedmaster is my aspirational watch, and I think the moon swatch will be a good reminder/motivator to eventually position myself to get one. The genius is, having written off Swatch, I have now become interested in several of the swatches (stainless steel ones) and see the James Bond Q watch in my future (I think my wife is getting it for me for Valentine’s Day) as well as two watches for my kids for the Chinese new year..so kudos to the Swatch Co.. As someone who never had walked in a swatch store, I am now a frequent visitor, and will be spending at least a grand in watches in this next month alone! I am pretty sure their are others just like me, and yes, I still want the OMEGA SPEEDMASTER…and have been thinking more about the Omega brand. So win, win…for both brands.

I was able to get Pluto without any issues - they didn’t say I couldn’t buy a second as I saw someone debating on the Saturn and Jupiter. Think of great alternatives at this price point like Orient Kamasu or Bambino and many others. Overall, Omega cheapened the brand. They could have produced a unique design with similar “space” concept with quality specs at an obtainable price point, and that could have been a win for everyone, leading to their other iconic lines.

The Moonswatch tried to play that "artificial scarcity" game as Rolex did (and spare me their PR about how they're not doing it - they absolutely are), but they're doing it with a janky $300 watch. Casio sells G-Shocks - twice as good for half as much. Guess what? No inventory issues. If the aim is to introduce new buyers into the Swatch or Omega fold, this failed spectacularly. All it did is expose the idiocy of companies making no effort to balance the Supply/Demand curve, and tell them "You want a nice watch? You'll have to fork over wads of cash, and be prepared to give your local AD a hand job just to get in line." Rich people may think they can just buy their way to anything with enough money, but average joes looking to buy a Moonswatch? They're not gonna put up with this.

SO MANY people have asked me about this and about Omega when prior they didn't even know what Omega was. I think watch nerds are mad about it but it has worked out perfectly for Omega and Swatch. I wholeheartedly agree that it seems to be that their overall strategy has been very obviously a complete success from the outset, & as such, you have to assume, that the entirety of it has transpired according to plan, which would mean they must be both, extremely pleased, & also had a set of overall goals that aren't what you (or I for that matter) would have set, or would seem to make the most amount of sense.
Perhaps they wanted to drive massive recognition & create an event that re-introduced Omega & Swatch to a whole generation or two of people who very likely, were wholly unaware of either brand, & in doing so, ALSO wanted to somehow maintain the air & function of exclusivity for Omega. SO - release in the way they did, string it out just so.. to maximize the length & breadth of the limelight, all the while, keeping the actual number of watches that hit the market at something of a minimum so as not to ever see any of these examples lying in the guttter at the end of the proverbial parade, like spent tickets at the end of a carnival. Meanwhile, holding the percieved esteem & "air of exclusivity" of Omega itself aloft enough so this scenarios end result isn't one where Omega finds the acceptable price point for its branded wares, as well as its placement within & among the heirarchy of, or just below the premium timepiece brands, for the most part, undiminished. ideally, Swatch not only maintains their price point, (not difficult) but also adds to its ability to sell more units per annum, in that their brand & current lineup iisn't diminished at all by the number of models offered per year, or units per model, since exclusivity never has been & is unlikely to ever be a part of the Swatch strategy.
Lets face it, Omega hasn't exactly done anything of note to seperate themselves from their competition, & at the area they compete, it's no longer Tag & Bulova & a handful of others, with so many new brands fighting for air in the same tank Omega has been swinning in for decades, they really had to do something or risk being outshined in short order.
I think whomever is running the show at Swatch, is smart as hell & likely preemptively, saved Omega a second time.
It's the only way I can make sense of it.

This watch got me into watches. I’ve worn an Apple Watch since it came out in 2015 and the hype of this watch got me watching your channel and I ended up buying a Brew metric in August because of that. Finally had the opportunity to pick up two MoonSwatches this past weekend. I’ve been very happy with them. Only complaint is I wish the front material didn’t scratch as easily. Polywatch will buff out scratches though.

I like this watch and will add one to my collection. I agree with your analysis completely! Hopefully Swatch would place this model in a brushed steel case and include a leather band and clasp. I know, I know it's an affordable brand and this is a stretch. 😄

I got one from the store, and actually like it. It looks good, put it on a 20mm tissot strap, is light too.

As someone who only really seriously started going into watches this year and wanted to get something relatively cheap for my 40th birthday I was initially really interested in getting a moonswatch. Then after the terrible launch and back tracking on the online sales I abandoned the idea. I ended up getting a squale second hand for £500 the same price as flippers were asking for moonswatches and I have no regrets.

My wife and I really wanted to get a couple of these watches for our own enjoyment. I now feel fortunate that there is no Swatch store in Denver and they were sold out when we visited the Dallas store.

I was in Las Vegas for work in September and checked the Swatch store at NY NY, where they were getting several in per day and selling out immediately. I went in my local store in Minneapolis and they had like 6 on hand. I was kind of not that into it anymore but I did get one.
It is what it is and if you’re ok with that it’s a decent enough watch. The strap is the worst though, you’ll want a different one for sure.

    Merry Christmas Terry🎄!
As you correctly stated, met expectations are a fundamental factor for happiness.
In this case, the watch is a $260, (if you can find one for retail), that is a disposable watch. It’s crystal is very easy to scratch and not replaceable.
Swatch could have done better. Much better.

Thanks TB for again covering this divisive product, I'm glad the hype has died down on the watch, you can buy a better watch for less money, the problem TSG has is that the market has since been flooded by Chinese fakes and that is entirely the fault of TSG by not making the real thing more widely available, the heat has been turned down, an opportunity missed but one that will be looked back on in years to come and will still be divisive. I myself have one (M2M) and immediately swapped out the sub-standard strap for a grey and black striped NATO strap , to date i have briefly put on the watch twice, it's in pristine condition and stays in it's Swatch plastic case i got from TSG, i will never sell it although i could easily have done so for way over the retail i paid for it, i have no regrets buying it, a unique experience in March that will never happen again in the watch world.

I wanted a MonnSwatch, couldn't get one and ended up buying a Bulova Lunar Pilot. Love it! Not going to get the MoonSwatch having the Bulova now.

    Great video Teddy.
I think this was the watch release of the year. When have we ever sign panicked line ups outside of watch shops?! Omega and Swatch made master stroke hear.

The Swatch Group sold over a million units of the MoonSwatch in 2022. That is a huge number. I believe that there were several target markets for this watch. Myself; I'm 60 years old and can't afford a Speedy. I love my Mission To Moon, which looks great on a black leather strap. It has also been a great watch. And BTW... I walked into a Swatch Boutique and walked out having access to every model. I would love to see a plastic Speedy style bracelet as an option to the velcro trap.

I was able to get various models at the boutique but still some are impossible to find. My kids love them, and let me borrow them for speedy Tuesdays 😉
