Inventor Zack Smith describes the use and difference between a speed-limiting drogue, stopping drogue, and para-anchor. Smith's drag device designs are in current use by NASA, Space X, US and other Foreign Coast Guards and Navies. Drone deployed para-anchors are now available through select private security contractors in the US and UK.
Whether you're a sport fisherman or long distance sailor, you reap the benefit of the most comprehensive, modern safety equipment ever built. Equipment made in the USA, since 1958.

Very nice and excellent explanation. Information on storm tactics is pretty thin out there. You going through the basics of drogues and para anchors is all i needed to refresh my knowledge :).
    Now let's practice!

what would be wrong with making a series drogue 1/2 the recommended length,
with two "missing chute lengths" to cleat at 3 different points, and carrying 3 different lighter weights to alternatively quick link on ?
i would rather one thing i could tune to 90% of the situations, and just plan to avoid the other 10% altogether..

Your idea is creative, but might require too many steps. Fiorentino has tested various lengths of series drogues and the loading on the equipment is likely too difficult for most to handle, to adjust. Coast Guard tests demonstrate the series has the highest failure rate of any drag device, unless the proper weight is used. It has to be in the range of 35 to 50 lbs. (16 to 23 kg). 10 lbs. (5 kg) can be used for the para-anchor and speed-limiting drogue in comparison.
If you plan to use the series as a speed-limiting drogue, then it might be easier and less expensive to purchase a speed-limiting drogue. There are many brands available. Our advice would be to follow the original instruction provided by the designer of the series.

Excelent talk. I only wish he spoke a little faster; they way it is I found it all too easy to understand.
