Why Jack Black Is One Of The Only Actors You Can't Replace

  • School of Rock is one of those timeless movies that has appealed to both kids and adults ever since it's initial debut. A big reason for that is the star power behind the movie's lead Jack Black. Jack Black brings a unique energy and point of view to the character Dewey Finn, and to a point that it couldn't be replicated by any other actor. School of Rock didn't make Jack Black's career, but it will always be one of his most popular films.

School of Rock worked because half the scenes were real. When it comes to teaching and jamming with the kids, you simply cannot fake the level of enthusiasm Jack had for the music and the abilities of those that were playing it. In those moments where Jack is giving each kid some instruction or the moments where he's absolutely floored by their talent there is almost no line between actor and character at all... he simply is acting upon his genuine emotions and feelings in the scene, and even the best actors in our collective human history aren't able to perfectly replicate that feeling.
Nothing is more authentic than the real deal.

This is still one of the best films. When it came out, I was like the same age as the kids in the movie (5th grade, maybe?) and it planeted the seed in my head that I wanted to be a rocker. Loved the charm and the collaboration and unbeatably good spirit of the film. Could've easily come across as mean-spirited or crass, but it was instead a super feelgood movie.

This movie is right at the very top of my list of favorites. A buddy of mine and I spent an entire winter watching this flick while we were snowed in. At one point, we'd had it on repeat for a solid 24 hour period. To this day, some 15 years or so later, he and I can both perform this movie line for line.

Here's to Jack Black... the man who was clearly inspired by MeatLoaf! Bridging the gap between film and music so effortlessly just seemed right for his career.
Sure, Black got his big screen debut in DEMOLITION MAN ( yup, he's actually one of the rebels standing next to Dennis Leary. ) Yet, in time, his prowess for making you laugh AND cry would definitely shine through once he got to star in SCHOOL OF ROCK.
Oh, for all you Jack Black fans, don't forget about TENACIOUS D AND THE PICK OF DESTINY. Love that movie!

Ah what a great video!! School of Rock is an incredibly nostalgic movie for me because my family watched it a lot when I was growing up & you really put to words things that I totally agree with, but never thought about quite that way before. Dewey Finn has the potential to be pretty creepy & awful considering that the plot is him manipulating a bunch of elementary school kids to hopefully help win him money, but Jack Black brings such heart & sincerity in the way that he grows to care & inspire the kids that it’s such a feel good movie instead. Even though Dewey’s lie is what puts him in position for the rest of the movie, his genuine love of music & art is what the audience is left remembering.

What an awesome movie!! Loved your analysis, never realized that for the better half of the movie he's the villain, taking advantage of those kids, jack black is a genious!! I remembered thinking those kids aren't fake playing, you just confirmed my suspicion. The en credits with the kids and Jack just improvising was pure gold! I also watched a video somewhere of the cast and Jack getting together and playing again somewhere, a true nostalgia bomb!! Love your videos man!! 👍👏👏👏👏👏

As a kid, School of Rock was one of my top favorite movies because I also loved rock n roll and this gave me the hope that one day maybe I could play music too. And hey, today I’m playing the drums. As an adult with kids of my own it’s a hard movie though, it’s a little too old with the language and what not for my kids, but a little too young for me to watch by myself now.

This movie got me through a nasty throat surgery when I was like 13-14 I think (don't remember which it was). I watched it on some sketchy pirate website at least twice every day for about a month until I was fine to eat solid-ish food again. Sure I was just slightly burnt out by the end but this thing was a triple dose of painkillers and I don't think I would've been able to handle doing absolutely nothing but lay in bed and let ice cubes melt in my mouth without it. I still really enjoy this movie. Jack Black is an absolute joy to watch because he's just so genuine and it comes through in his acting. Mans is a treasure and should be treated as such.
