    Wow so many things wrong with this "review".
    How can you even compare the bass (if you can even consider the M50s have bass) to the M100 and then say the M100s are not controlled? Really, what did you listen with? The M50s are a JOKE for bass...completely disconnects me from music and I am a classical pianist so I listen from classical to latin, pop, oldies, etc. Pretty much any music style except metal or "gangster rap".
    Then the highs issue....really, missing details? I urge you to go to an ear doctor and stop listening to loud music. You look too young to already be losing your high freq hearing man. The M50s are very bright, almost ear piercing, but of course, if your hearing is losing the high frequencies then that will explain why you feel the M100 are lacking on detail.
    Then your biased build quality comparison was the final drop for me. I mean, that was just plain silly.
    You got one less subscriber this morning.

      Check out the graphs of both iems, the V100s bass is less deep and controlled, higher in distortion. It also has treble roll off as Lachlan mentioned, though it is smoother. M50x is less sharp than the regular m50 and its also only mildly bright cause of a single peak, no big deal. At least it's treble response doesn't drop past 10k...
      So since objective data agrees with Lachlan, I'll Say you are the one that needs ears Checked.

    You seem to have a proverbial "stick up you bum" when it comes to vmoda.
    Surprised as you were able to justify the solo2 at its current $200 price point with less criticism and more enthusiasm....
    I own the m80. Have for a few years. I never knew you reviewed it until the other day I watched your review. Afterwards I felt that you and I do not hear things the same. I was surprised once again. I would not describe them at all as being rolled off to the point of congested. I am able to hear a very good amount of detail. Especially compared to the solo2. I don't get it.....

    Wow, don't agree with this review at all. The v-modas outclasses the Mx50's in highs, mids and base..... These two head phones are on different levels.....Did you use a weak driver for this test? The v-modas need way much more power than a samsung phone provides for example...
    Actually the v-modas are very good for classical music, not like a flat pair in the same price range of course, but the highs are still sparcly and very distinctive. Violins sounds amazing. The mids are also very good. Also the base doesn't bleed into the mid-low at all, like the m50x do. Comparing with the daft highs of the m50X the v-modas highs are phenomenal.
    The v-modas need an amp for phones, also for weak laptop soundcards...
    I'm puzzled about this review, something isn't right.

      I have the V-Moda M-100 they are really good. I often use my phone EQ to change the sound. When I listen to rock music I change my EQ to get more High and Mid and less Bass. But to really get all the headphone Bass I had to buy a small portable AMP. I got the FiiO e11 (50-70$ can on amazon )

    I have both headphones for a long time....The m50s are a slight clearer on the treble weaker on the base which is to be expected as the vmodas are bossted...with my life on the line i would pick the vmoda since i am a basshead..but the thing about the bass on the modas is that it is not overpowering and it is very clear sounding and the mid range doesn't get drowned out....but it's very close. They both some of the best headphones available.

    This review was more opinionized than anything. It's a poorly informed reviewer that sounds like he took the opportunity to throw in a comparison with headphones that do completely different things and advertise for AT while he was at it.
    That's not a harsh description of this review at all.
    I think this guy should atleast title it properly, like "My Impressions and comparing them to my personal favorite headset"

    (spoiler: long rant. tl;dr at the end)
    Dear Lach, try to bend the headband on the M50 like you do with the M-100. Because I don't think you would want to do that.
    Now durability is a very objective thing, out of all things headphones, and I, having both headphones, will stand by the M-100's construction. Thin metal on the headband arms can still take more of a beating than thick plastic, and if you look at the inner side of that same joint on the M50, you will find it hollow. Not to say that the M50 is not durable - it will survive conditions - but the M-100 can't be less durable than that. Also, plastic breaks, but metal bends - and we can bend it back, in the worst case.
    On another note, the point where you say the connection of the earcups and the arms can pop out, well it does pop out, but actually to absorb the force exerted on the driver housing when it drops, so that is actually a design feature.
    Comfort, being just a tad more subjective than durability, is also better on the M-100. I hated the clamping force of the M50 and the headband construction that doesn't comply with many noggin shapes. M-100's headband would be more ergonomic so as to make up for its weight. Bunch of people would agree on the M50 being the less comfortable. The M50 earpads might best the stock M-100 earpads, but not the XL pads.
    Onto the more subjective things, I personally think the M50 is overrated, and boring. And overrated. But that's just me. The M50 is more technically complete, but the M-100 is more musical. Now most people getting the M50 aren't doing music production, and if you're not listening to anything classical, orchestra-ish, then the M-100 is more musical. If you're a Top 40 listener then it only gets better. The M-100 has a really fun sound when compared to the M50. Bigger, more airy soundstage for closed back, better toe-tapping factor (generally warm sounding headphones are easier to listen to than reference pairs with forward highs). If you try to get technical, which in reviews you do, then the M50 will seem better, but in real world music listening scenario I bet the M-100 would be a better companion.
    The only thing I would complain about the M-100 is that it doesn't fold flat so you can rest it on your chest when wearing around the neck, otherwise it always feels smaller than then M50.
    About the M50, it's not the be-all, end-all headphone. Frankly, it's not even the best value in its price bracket, let alone the M50X. The M50 is hyped in the serious audio community just as much as Beats is hyped among consumers. I think we should stop considering the M50 as the benchmark of consumer headphones, and think that it bests everything else in everything.
    tl;dr I have both headphones, think M-100 is better durability and comfort wise, and M50's sound is overrated. In real world listening the M-100 tends to be better with more soundstage and a warmer sound signature, unless you're into classical music, in which case both headphones perform poorly with the M50 being a bit better.
    P/S: It's quite weird that you liked the Beats Solo 2 but not so much the V-Moda XS...they have probably the same forward mids profile.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  10 лет назад +2

      ***** Thanks for your detailed thoughts... I definitely don't think that the M50X is the best at everything, though I tend to think of it as a bit of a better all rounder than the M100. Don't get me wrong, I really like the M100 as well. As for the Solo 2 and the XS, the XS's forward mids are a little more dominant simply because they lack bass compared to the Solo2. And given that the XS isolates so poorly, I end up raising the volume when I'm wearing them around - which really just puts those mids in my face. Different strokes for different folks, as always!

    Like a few others have said, something weird is up with your review. I think you might have made some decent points about the v-moda's build quality, as though I haven't had a single issue with mine I did THINK of the same possible issues when I first saw them, however I think your review of the sound vs. the ATH is completely unfair and overblown. You tend to go into a lot of detail in your review, giving the impression that you might really know a lot and understand what you are talking about. I fell for this the first time I watched it, but the second time around I felt like you might have been doing that on purpose. Here is why.
    You completely neglected to mention that the two headphones are meant to be used for two completely different things. You did sort of mention that the ATH was for studio type work, but you completely failed to state where the vmodas are supposed to be used, which is for DJ and EDM type music, music that focuses on bass such as rap / hip hop, electronic music, bass&drum, and a lot of other things. This is where I believe your bias kicked in. The second time through this review, I could see where that you were biased towards the ATHs throughout, not just in regards to the vmodas but in regards to other headphones as well. No matter what headphones did what well in whatever category, they were always just *slightly worse* than the ATH.
    I also don't agree with your analysis of the high / mid / low sound quality. You claim the mids are drowned out when bass kicks in, and I completely disagree. Perhaps you are using an underpowered sound card or similar, or perhaps you are being biased once again. I can hear mids just as well as highs and lows in everything I have listened to. The only point about it's sound quality I thought you were actually accurate on is that, of course, they wouldn't be the best for classical music. But then again, anyone who gets headphones designed towards EDM type music in order to listen to classical music probably needs to get their head checked a little.
    Maybe consider taking away a little bit of your bias towards the ATHs and review again.

      V-Moda sound the best with stock pads, I think the XL pads gave him the wrong impression. Which is a common mistakes for most people actually because they think it's more comfortable but they didn't realize it changes the sound too.

    The earcup holder is technically designed as so since the Crossfade LP for ease when cleaning or disassembling the headphone as well as installing and removing the earpads. Mine are fitted snug however so they won't be an issue.
    While yeah the M50x's are arguably the best overall headphone, the V-Modas are clearly meant to be more "fun" but still cater to DJ's and the like, hence the heavy focus on the lows.

  • @Freakreader

    i still don't understand why M50 is so popular. i tried them and the high are just too dry and artificial, it's good for acoustic but for vocal and drums i find the high rather annoying. it's true they are more detailed but i don't think it sounds natural, i would describe it as "boring". And the bass are a little bit tricky to explain, it is there but somehow too shallow and tight and fast and lack a little boomines. don't get me wrong i do love ath, i think ath tad 300 is the best headset in his class. personally i prefer open back design rather closed so maybe that's why i little bit picky on ath.
    what do you guys like about ath?

  • @BasedGhoul
    @BasedGhoul 10 лет назад

    Lachlan, that yolk part where it joins to the cups that looks like it can pop out was intentionally designed to pop out. Kolton was talking about it awhile back on the original M80 thread. The idea behind it is if you drop the headphone and if the force is strong enough the connecting joint yolk part will pop out and separate from the cups. The reason behind it is to try and save the drivers and cups from damage. Its easier for V-MODA to repair a busted joint on one of the arms then it would be a cup or driver or so that's what the story is. If you check my M-100 review you'll see me discussing the cups. The cups, IMO, are the weak link in the design. If you try and tighten the screws on the shields the tork can crack the plastic cups like an egg.
    Your pad findings were pretty much right on with my own findings. In my opinion you can tell the M-100 was voiced by someone who is a DJ (Kolton). Its rather terrible for some genres but really shines with various pop and electronica. I'm guessing this isn't your genre but if you ever get a chance try listening to some brutal death metal like Cannibal Corpse or Nile. Nile especially is an experience. Believe it or not it works acceptably well. The heavy crunch of the guitars, distorted guttural like distortion, raspy grunty vocals, and overpowering drums really sound crazy on the M-100. Warning though, songs from those bands can sound pretty whacked out on the M-100.

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 лет назад

      I can definitely see now the advantage of having the yoke pop out, but the actual metal part itself is quite thin. It still seems like it's more susceptible to bending damage than other designs. There is no advantage to the design either - the M100 cups don't even swivel laterally, which from a comfort perspective just seems a bit silly for such a large headphone. I still like the M-100 though, and definitely agree with you about the tuning.

    Nice review. Thank you. I had the m50x and thought they were very very good until I tried the NAD viso hp50 much later on. After listening to the hp50, the m50x sounded terrible in comparison. The m50x sounded very closed in and more rough in texture (unrefined). The bass was also more loose to my ears.
    I heard such good things about the v-moda m100 that I was dying for you to review them. And you did! Thank you.
    I was a little disappointed that they didn't get as good a positive review as I hoped. What killed it for me was that you prefer the m50x to them. I hate the m50x after hearing the viso hp50. I sold the m50x with no regrets.
    I was hoping to get the m100 in complement to the hp50 for when I'm in the mood for a fun listen (some electronic music). But if they don't sound significantly better than the m50x then that would be a bad decision.
    I have a couple questions if you be so kind to answer.
    1. How does the soundstage of the m100 compare to the m50x and hp50 (normal pads)?
    2. Does the m100 sound more refined than the m50x in the midrange (I know the hp50 does)?

    I've tried both headphones and ultimately went with the ATH M50x. Everyone seems to complain about the lack of bass on the M50x's but this is ridiculous. If your entire audio rig is flat then the M100s with a "bassier" bias will obviously sound as if they are "fuller" than the M50x's. What is amazing about the M50s is that if you use a good eq (digital/analog) to boost lows the bass CONTROL crushes that of the M100s. Personally, I would rather have a pair of headphones that can have head-shaking bass when I want it and then have incredible clarity, richness and beautiful sounding mids and low mids the rest of the time. Heck having the M50s made me appreciate my 24 bit vinyl recordings like Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.3 in C minor. Electric guitars sound luscious as do female vocals on Audio Technicas. If you want to see the difference in audio reproduction of both headphones try listening to a vinyl copy of Daft Punk's Random Access Memories.

    Interestingly enough, the area where the metal meets the headphone cup on the M-100 is actually designed that way, rather than having it fixed into place and potentially broken for good if it was to stress on that point. On heavy impact it is actually able to be popped back into place if the metal separates from the can. So no worries there on durability. Good review, I think I'm going to be buying the M-100 this weekend.

    • @freddywayne
      @freddywayne 9 лет назад

      Yet, this reviewer didn't read up on V-Moda's design to understand that the ear cup's metal forks are designed that way and concluded that the all plastic M50x are probably more durable. His credibility went out the window after this terrible and incomplete review! What idiots are crowd funding this snake oil salesman??

    • @lachlanlikesathing
      @lachlanlikesathing  9 лет назад +2

      ***** Look, here's how I see it. The earcups on the M100 do not swivel laterally like they do on the M50x (or most other headphone designs). You can only safely apply a little torsion force on the earcups. The metal arms will bend before they pop out of their sockets. If you were to accidentally sit on this headphone, or if it was packed in with other gear tightly (and both the M50X and M-100 are suggested for professional use) the metal arms are a potential failure point. This is why most other headphone designs have swivelling earcups. It's also a more comfortable if they swivel. To make the earcups not swivel on a design this large is questionable. Now it's obvious that you really like the M-100. I like it too! But just because it is made of metal doesn't make it a more durable design than the M50x. Please calm down.

      ***** "If you were to accidentally sit on this headphone, or if it was packed in with other gear tightly (and both the M50X and M-100 are suggested for professional use) the metal arms are a potential failure point." ????
      Dont have to be a scientist to see that the weakest point of the M50s is in fact the swivel try sitting on them! If you sit on m100, you'll hurt yourself before you break them. Also, any Pros would actually put their m100 with the provided carrying case Good luck the soft fabric pouch that comes with the m50s. Sure the M50s might sound better but STOP trying convincing yourself and others that they're more durable because the physical evidence proves quite the contrary...

    Quick question, I know you've done a review on the V Moda m100's review but have you ever tried out the AKG k701 or the q701? There are no large stores around me I can test either of these out. they are made in Germany and many people start picking them over the Audio Technicas lately, amongst others because of their adjustable base.
    plus they retail at about the same price as the Technicas

    ***** One thing you didn't mention is that the V-Moda headphones have one of the best warranties I've ever seen. If you break them "out of warranty"(2 years), there is still a LIFETIME 50% off warranty backing them up. So if you can actually manage to break these, you will forever be able to get another pair for 50% off.
    When I dropped these from a measly 4 feet onto a carpeted rug and the earcup popped out, I almost shit myself. However I was happy to discover that this is in fact part of the design to help prevent drop damage.
    They boast this as part of their advertisement: "Concrete Drop: Survives 70+ drops on concrete from 6 feet (10x industry standard)". I don't really plan to test that, but I do believe them that these are some of the most durable headphones you can possibly get.

    ***** Best Buy had a 4 hour sale on the Beats Solo 2 Wireless. I picked them up for $199. They are basically the Beats Solo 2 with the ability to use them wireless if you choose. I love the fact that you don't need battery power when you use them with the chord. I haven't opened them yet, but I'm curious. Do you prefer the Beats Solo 2 Wireless for this price or the V-Moda M-100 overall?

    Hey Lachlan great review as always. It seems the NAD Viso and M50X are your top recommendations and I know you don't have it anymore but how does the Momentum rank amongst those two in your opinion? With the recent price drop $220 in US, it is looking more and more like a steal, I don't like the M50x for casual listening too glossy and artificial sounding distant mids but technically competent and I respect your views. I like the more natural forward lower mids of Sony ZX700, HD598, UE6000 so is the Momentum for me? And how does the NAD fare against those headphones in terms of mids? Keep up the awesome work and I'll look into setting up a patreon thingy. Cheers

    Hey mate, really love the way you conduct your reviews!
    And I got a question, am I correct in my assumption that you recommend M50X for listening to classical music/musicals? I'm looking at ATH PRO700MK2. Which, compared by specifications, are a bit better than M50X, but I haven't found any of your reviews addressing PRO700, however I'm assuming that if M50X would be a good choice, then PRO700 would probably fit my requirements as well.
    If M50X or PRO700 wouldn't be suitable, which other alternative would you recommend? I'm trying to make a more mature decision buying my new headphones and classical music is the reason I buy them for. So I would appreciate any advice on it!

      The Pro700 is not better than the M50X, it just sounds different. I actually own a pair! If you are after classical, go for the NAD Viso HP50. It's an excellent all rounder with a great sound. :)

    I also bought them so my short feedback:
    all together they're really nice headphones. A cool look and of corse an awesome sound ! What also satisfied me is the shipping. I chose the cheapest one for 20 dollars and they arrived in Switzerland (Usa - Switzerland) in 5 business-days. There are 2 things I don't like. First of all that there isn't a normal audio cabel in the standart order and the second thing is, that the removing of the shields isn't that easy. The tool the send you isn't very useful, especially when the screws are a bit warn and the tool is "too small" for the screw. Sorry for my english. hope I could help you :)

    I generally agree with most reviews of yours but i generally disagree with your point of view on the M-100's. I had the M-100's for a year now and they are still in perfect shape. The cups are attached that way so that it will pop out and then can easily be put back in. I personally have no issues with the Original pads myself. Cables are ok with exception of the 1 button which on the ones I have with the M-100 and XS easily breaks. I am in NYC and isolation between my M-100, XS and Solo 2 I would rank the M-100 1st then Solo 2 2nd and XS 3rd.
    I generally disliked the sound of the XL pads personally
    In terms of Sound quality of the 3 Headphones I currently own that is about $20 is the M-100, Solo 2 and then XS. I prefer Bass but I am looking at some other headphones but they need to be closed since i will be using it portable

      I understand your issue with this, since no matter what, not having bought the unit in retail changes things. That said I believe my review reflected what I believe are the merits of both headphones. Since June 2014 I stopped accepting review units from manufacturers to avoid these kinds of conflicts of interest. This review was produced after that policy change. I always welcome feedback about my reviews and you can check out my ethics policy here: www.lachlanlikesathing.com/p/ethics-statement.html

    • @ThoseWhoStayUofM
      @ThoseWhoStayUofM 9 лет назад

      James J Your comment is pretty disrespectful. Maybe this isn't true for you, but some people are capable of forming opinions irrespective of money. If you were able to demonstrate that there is a bias present in Lachlan's review, with actual reasoned arguments, then at least your critical analysis would be respectful, feigning the motive of trying to help the reviewer, rather than blatantly disrespecting the reviewer's credibility without just cause.
      The m-100 isn't simply a warm headphone. It's a very dark sounding headphone, to my ears. I disagree that the lower mids are recessed. Rather, to my ears, it's the mid-bass that is recessed. The distinction is that the m-100 recesses the mid-bass so it will not bleed into the vocal section, which is a common issue with bassy headphones. The frequency response charts validate this view.
      The greatest difference in sound signature between the m50 and the m-100 is in the treble. The m-100 has a peak at 10 kHz, in an otherwise recessed treble section. This gives it a broader soundstage and a slight airy quality. The m-50 has a treble peak at the 8-9 kHz range, in an otherwise forward treble section. In addition to giving the headphone an airy and sparkly quality, this introduces some stridency in the vocals that is not present on the m-100. I've also noticed that this sibilance issue on the m50 has gotten worse with burn-in. It's a rare example, for me, of burn-in making a headphone sound worse.
      So perhaps Lachlan was biased, but what I've demonstrated is an understanding of the subject matter, and a critical response to Lachlan's review... and yes, I own both headphones.

      Okay, back after learning a bit more, I can without a shadow of a doubt recommend the V Modas over the audio technicas.The reason why the Audio-Technica ATH M50X headphones are so popular is because everything is so loud. Notes that should be in the backround blare way louder than they should, and many confuse this for better clarity etc. The sound on these headphones for the price, is not as great of a deal as many say it is, for normal use, holy hell I would never suggest these. Not for monitoring either, despite getting everything else right, (for monitoring) this is not in any way a flat pair of headphones. For casual listeners, these are fatiguing as all hell, for monitoring these are bassy as all hell.
