  • The other tune that always reminds me of fiddler Laurence Montague is this one, the jig commonly called The Rambler.
    When I first heard Laurence at this I remember thinking it was just the best tune I'd ever heard. When I tried to play it though it sounded very plain - what I was hearing was the great phrasing and 'lift' that Laurence was putting into the melody.
    This was recorded in the 20s by Sligo fiddle master James Morrison, and Laurence and myself and many more like us would have played it at fleadhs and far-flung sessions all around Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon when we were ramblers looking for the grest music and all the great people that played it.
