    → Today is #EuropeDay - share this 2-minute video
𝗕𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗦𝗔𝗬: ‘𝗜 𝗔𝗠 𝗔 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗡’ - 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗡 𝗖𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗟
Today, 9 May, is Europe Day when every year the European Union celebrates "peace and unity in Europe".
It was also on this day in 1948 - 76 years ago - that Winston Churchill addressed a rapturous gathering of 40,000 people for a European rally held in Dam Square, Amsterdam, in which he gave a remarkable pro-European speech.
Be in no doubt: Churchill was a passionate European, and a committed proponent of a ‘United Europe’ as the antidote to war and hate on our continent.
In his Amsterdam speech, extracted in the video, Churchill said:
𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗘 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀.
… A Europe in which men will be proud to say:
    ‘𝗜 𝗔𝗠 𝗔 𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗡’
We hope to see a Europe where men of every country will think as much of being a European as of belonging to their native land…
We hope wherever they go in the European continent, they will truly feel:
'𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗜 𝗔𝗠 𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗠𝗘. 𝗜 𝗔𝗠 𝗔 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗭𝗘𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗧𝗢𝗢.'
    Let us meet together.
    Let us work together.
Let us do our utmost - all that is in us - for the good of all.
    ▪ As Churchill left in his open-top car a choir sang a new song called, 'One Europe'.

I worked for an American company from 1993 to 2000 and we had regular meetings in the US with people from all over the world. At one time the discussion at the dinner table was about identity. The Americans identified with being American first and then where their ancestors came from. The Brits identified as British in most cases but they were amazed when I told them that I was European first and then Dutch.

As a 71 yr old, and so has voted twice to remain in Europe, I'm not sure I would say tha I was European first, but I was so pleased to be part of that community and be equals wherever i go, no matter what trouble I'm having with the language, to have poeple around me from all of the EU.
I am sad. Sad for my loss, sad for my kids and their friends and their loss, sad for the generation that has bearly known what that means. My generaton has let these people down, which is even more sanguine given 'my lot' won't be around for so much longer.
On a positive note my son now lives on Prague with his Polish wife and Czech step son and my nephew now lives in the Republic with his lovely Irish wife and three children. Good luck to them. They are high earners, so its not a problem, but what about the rest?

SOMEONE has urged me to stop doing posts about Churchill, with the comment, “He appeals to the very people who voted for Brexit!” And: “Churchill remains a grotesque racist and a stubborn imperialist, forever on the wrong side of history.”
MY REPLY: You wrote, "He appeals to the very people who voted for Brexit!"
That's precisely why I do the history about Churchill.
But look, I don't just post about Churchill. Since I started campaigning against Brexit in 2012, I have done many thousands of articles and graphics and many hundreds of videos. Only a handful have been about Churchill.
I am fully aware of Churchill's failings and his racism. But it is a fact that Churchill is recognised as one of the 11 founders of today's European Union - no other British person is in that category.
Brexiters have tried to recruit Churchill for their side. I am crushing their false claims and people are learning a lot from these Churchill posts.
In any event, if I have to stop posting about the history, I will stop posting all together. But maybe it is time for me to stop so I can retire. Are you ready to take the reins and spend the next 12 years campaigning against Brexit?

It is history, what people said or did cannot be denied, good or bad. We just need to discuss and learn.

Having read the WHOLE speech, past the Christianity waffle at the beginning, it's a great speech.
There's ZERO doubt that Churchill saw Britain at the heart of the a new United Europe (with the nations of its Empire and Dominions included). When the UK finally joined the Empire was no more.
Now the UK has neither Empire nor EU, and is, predictably, poorer for it.
