Also known as Bamboo Dance, in tradition, Magunatip was performed as a victorious dance when Murut warriors return from a headhunting raid. The dancers follow the music tempo to place their feet in and out of clapping bamboo poles in right timing (to avoid the painful clip). Murut people are no longer headhunter today, so bamboo dance is mainly performed in cultural functions and celebrations for entertainment.
More about this dance: The Anggalang and Magunatip are traditional dances of the Murut people, most of whom reside in the interior region of Sabah. Apart from many of the Murut groups, the Magunatip is also performed by other indigenous ethnic tribes including the Kadazandusun of Tambunan and the Kwijau Dusun of Keningau. Magunatip is derived from the word atip, meaning "to press between two surfaces."
Those daring enough to take part in this pulsating dance must possess the skill and agility in jumping and putting their feet between the clapping bamboo poles without being trapped. The performance often begins with a solo male dancer performing the mahihialang while being flanked and backed up by the Murut ladies doing the graceful anggalang.
Accompanied by music played on six large gongs, 25 tagunggak (bamboo idiophones) and a tambor (drum), the man is dressed as a warrior donning the Murut bark jacket and loin cloth, wielding a sword known as gayang, while the women are adorned with costumes known as limpur, usually elaborately beaded and embroidered.
The Anggalang and Magunatip are also performed as part of the tinauh, the Tagal Murut's bridewealth exchange ceremony, a practice by the largest and most widespread of Sabah's Murutic people that lingers to this day. Initially performed to welcome triumphant battle groups or victorious head hunting parties in the olden days, the dances of Anggalang and Magunatip are now mostly presented during weddings and other such occasions.
Murut Borneo (Sabah Malaysia)❤
Murut has always intrigued me. what a mystical tribe.
It's my opinion but
Malaysians, Indonesians, Filipinos and Taiwanese people have got to be the coolest Asians ever😩
We are not ''Asians''. Asian is geographical term, as well as politics, and not a ethnicity nor a race. We are Austronesian!
the Nagas are our eldest brothers
Gille87 Most Austronesians are geographically and genetically Asian...
Austronesian family 🏝
I love the dance style, the culture and everything...what a beautiful people...
Bunyi bambu tu sgt mnyeramkn klu kena kaki...teriak ko mcm tu nanti..hahaha..apapun bangga jdi org sbh bermcm budaya.. rakyatnya pun baik2 Dan tolerance..
The Dayak Murut of North Borneo👍💕
Wow....I'm from Mizoram (India) and i like to say that...Bamboo Dance is also our traditional dance,,, and we the mizo's are also known as Headhunter's ..the thing is,, we're so so far from Malaysia and i don't understand how our traditional are same?
I think its common here in Asia that certain tribe have bamboo dance & head hunting too
Not surprising when you think about it... it's possible that the Javanese Hindu based majapahit empire that succeeded the sri visayan empire had a very strong indian influence on Malaysia,Singapore and indonesia..trade and cross cultural exchange could have taken place.....I see a strong indian influence in the Indonesian martial art of pentjak silat not to mention the cuisine and spices which have indian influence which could have been assimilated...both empires of the sri visayan/majapahit empires stretched across many countries... it's beautiful how aspects of Indian culture were infused in southeast Asia .
Yes .. you're right...i am from Nagaland ..and i have seen the traditional danc of mizo it resemble the same it is
@@redbaron1953 please learn more..sorry to say..
@@channelkur8871 What do you mean 'learn more'?
You cannot deny the significance of Javanese Majapahit and Malay Srivijayan hegemonies over the Maritime Southeast Asian region in the distant past. The Javanese and the Malays (other than Khmers, Viets and Siamese) are regional crucial players in Southeast Asian Geopolitics.
All of those peoples had or have remarkable cultural, religious and historical with the Indians.
So, it is not impossible that their ties influence or somehow exposed to the not-so-related peoples like the Mizos and Nagas in Northeast India.
Thank you for keeping the dance alive! 😊
Love from selangor..
Love from borneo Indonesia
Without reading comments just watching them i mistakenly identify them as igorots from philippines. Happy to see similarities between us malayan people...
@船尾中文 yes...keep claiming everything, don't leave even a thing from malaysia, all things in this world belong to philippines
@船尾中文 just like what philippines did to sabah so what's wrong for me to say that the philippines is the greatest most known claimer ever on earth...idc wadafak is ur igorot or what,u don't need to relating ur people with us...we know southeast asian share a lot of similarity just like indonesian and malaysia and thai with vietnam but please not for malaysia and philippines that's all muah
@船尾中文 what do you mean?do you think its the gentle way for claim something that you already sold?Sulu sultanate gets Sabah even from Brunei sultanate but have heard that Brunei try to claim us?and plot fact here,Sulu sultanate are founded by Malay guys whom from Johor, Malaysia and the reason of Philippines for claiming Sabah just like encouraging Malaysia for claim Sulu as sulu was founded by them
@船尾中文 we are not taken by malaysia but we are united with malaysia, there's no Malaysia if sabah are not there and there's no Malaysia if Malaya are not there...mind ur own bussines
@船尾中文 i'm sabahan and i love for being malaysian than being called as 'filip1gnoy' muah...p*tang ina mo
I would bust my face tripping dancing over those long wooden sticks lol🤣😂. Beautiful dance and the beat was enticing. I have ancestors from Madagascar, they descend from people from Borneo. They have so many customs similar to Native Americans in North and South America it is very intriguing.
no,most of madagascar people today migrated from the coastal of Southeast asia(sumatera indonesia and malaysia peninsula)...there's no prove that the madagascar people are migrated from borneo
The real Dayak - Sabahan Borneo united with the real Dayak - Iban....
I first saw such a dance in Sandokan ... beautiful .. hello from Hungary

Masya Allah.. Suku Dayak, Kalimantan, Indonesia.. We are love you And so proud of you, Kalimantan.
🙄this is Sabah dance from Malaysia, not Indonesia. Stop claiming our culture. Can't you read? It's literally said Sabah there at the channel, where did you learn your geography?
Reog Ponorogo from Indonesia

Nampak betul ko tu bodoh. Dah tau dayak bukan saja di Indonesia tetap juga ko tu bodoh nak komen. Patutlah pikiran ko tak maju. masih duduk di kampung...
This is insanely fast at the end and so enjoyable to watch! :o :))
Tinikling - this similar cultural dance reminds me of the Filipino/Philippines' folk dance of Tinikling; in America, the closest thing would be a Double Dutch rope jumping contest, in an African-American community.
We are of malay descents. We inherited this dance from them Borneo (Sabah) cuture.
@@melnoche4237 don't you mean Austronesian?

This make me feel like we should not majukan Sabah. Its not that i dont want sabah to be Maju as Malaya but im afraid these uniqueness and tradition of Murut people in Malaysia will lose its heir and gone.
It’s okay for Sabah to become maju just like Malaya. Malaya is getting more urbanised and modern and therefore there will be more platforms for traditional dance and culture to be showcased. Siti Nurhaliza and Noranizah Idris are living proof that you can become modern without having to destroy traditional cultures. In fact, traditions flourish together with modernisation. And Malaysia able to do that! 😊
nak majukan sabah x semestinya dgn buat bandar with full of skyscaper tp boleh majukan dgn ambil kira tarikan tmpat tu..buat bandar ekopelancongan..perbaiki jaringan transportation from one area to another..byk negara yg based on ekopelancongan cth mcm new zealand and some area in japan yg maju but still pelihara culture dia
These dancers are under the ‘kementerian belia dn sukan’ not just came out from the jungle of Sabah.
Maju bukan makna dia hilang tradisi. Maju dalam ekonomi tapi tradisi itu harus kekal.
Anak saya yang di tengah. 😀😀💕💕💕❤❤❤❤🌠🌠🌠👌👌👍
Bangga kalau anak saya 👏👍
Wah! 😍
Kids watching this know the pain when it smashes your foot when you move too slowly 🤣
Wao...what a mesmerise performance....I am also Indian dancer...I like your feathers....how can I buy that feather...please reply me
Thank you. These feathers are not so commonly sold. You can try your luck at our weekly native market at Donggongon town on Friday.
@@mysabahTV sorry sir ... I am staying in India....
@@SamirKreative There is a good chance India has online shops that sell pheasant feather. You can try to search.
@@mysabahTV thanks alot sir for your valuable information.....God bless you 🙏🙏🙏
Brilliant
These are like ancient agility ladder drills 😀
Yeah I'd failed it miserably if I was around back then 😂. Skipping rope games at school got me good no need make it any harder.
Do you perform for weddings in Kl?
The dancers are based in KK. But I'm sure they are willing to perform in KL if their flight are covered.
