  • The course of Stuart “Stu” Long’s life veered radically after a near-death experience and spiritual conversion led him to seminary; it changed again when he was diagnosed with the degenerative disease that would lead to his death at age 50. The life of this extraordinary Montana priest and member of Helena (Mont.) Council 844 is now captured in Father Stu, a new film starring Mark Wahlberg and in theaters April 13. Those close to Father Stu reflect on his life, ministry and how the new film captures his spirit.

I cannot wait to see this movie tonight. I love Mark Wahlberg as an actor, and I am very much excited to see him in this role. I love that Mark is a Catholic, and after many years away from the church, I am very much back. My grandmother passed away in February this year, and this was my breaking point. I need God, and I want to go back to my Catholic church.

I watched this movie two weeks ago on an overseas flight and it struck me to the core

@Julia Rivera first off I want to give my condolences. 2nd after seeing Mark Wahlberg talking about this movie I couldn't wait to watch... There was one scene in particular, when he got in the motorcycle accident and his vision of Mary... I felt like someone hit me with a cattle prod, I had cold chills all over my body.. as a Catholic, as a Christian man I would love the opportunity to chat with you about this movie. I am a single guy who maybe has choose the wrong women, maybe just maybe I'm seeing your message through Divine intervention, because I need a woman of faith in my life, you never know what The Lord has in his plans. If you would like to chat sometime let me know.

What a Blessing his life was and is. His acceptance of the Will of God and love and mercy experienced by Father Stu continues to transform lives. He has given us an example THY WILL not mine be done. We all are given that choice The Divine Merciful Jesus gives us all that chance to say YES. Don't mourn for him he is with the Lord.

!!! Greetings from Montréal, Québec, Canada !!! I am 62 yrs. old, at spring of 2005 (Easter time) I was 45 yrs. old, TV was on, Movies about Jesus's story/crucifiction was playing and I felt a strong message, I could see myself with the 'Roman Collar', but did not put too much attention to it. The next year, around the same time, AGAIN, the same feeling/message got to me, and still, did not put too much attention to it, but it always stayed in the back of my mind that either it was my calling or in a past life, I had been a priest. Now, at 62, close to retirering, it's too late for me to go back to the Seminary and do those studies, but deep inside, I still see myself in a priest uniform !!! Because on my Calmness, soft attitude, listening/helping people around me (Canadian and Latin...lots of Latin; Mexican/Salvadorians/Panamenean, etc), I was given the Title of 'Père Jean/Father John' and Padre Juan from my Latin contacts !!! I speak 5 languages; Originally FRENCH and ENGLISH from home, then sudied Bilingual Sign Language (French and English and Spanish !!! I know God had/has plans for me, sooo let's see what my future holds for me in three years when I shall retire !?! Have a great rest of week and stay healthy my good men !!! God Bless, AMEN !!!

If Father Stu was the Stuart Long I've known who worked at Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, CA in the mid-1990s, I can say that he was a good person and manager. We had a daily meeting before the museum opened and he was such a great person to lead, a motivator, full of humor, and a person of good character. He would do his rounds talking to all the gallery attendants including me and he would easily start a conversation with you. He was very polite and even mannered. He would acknowledge you and ask if you are doing ok. I didn't even think he would become a priest as he did not seem to be into any type of religion. However, I believe God can call on anyone including him as a way to bring goodness into the world.

How were the Knights of Columbus involved with Father Stu? I'm not a member of the Knights of Columbus but I used to run a print Christian ad agency, Liturgical Publications of St. Louis. As an ad salesman I sold quite a few church bulletin ads and annual directory ads to the different chapters around the midwest and the south. And I used to attend their meetings as an ad sales rep for LPI of St. Louis to see if any of the Knights that owned businesses were interested in advertising with their parish church bulletin. What I noticed at the meetings was everything was open, unlike the freemasons, and quite a few Knights were really into hunting and fishing, and had turkey and meat shoots. Was Father Stu into hunting and fishing and the outdoors?

Unfortunately this is the real world today. Yesterday @ getting gas 2 people were fighting over the gas line and who was next. The F word came out like light birds singing. We as a people have let this happen. That is why we are receiving warnings from Our Blessed Lord. Each of us must examine our part and work to show the love and mercy of Christ.

I've heard the language was unnecessarily and relentlessly crude. To me, this ruins an otherwise great movie I would have enjoyed watching. I realize it's part of who the man was. It's part of who I was, too. But that doesn't mean I want to sit through an hour or more of it today. The film could have been made according to 1950 language standards and it would have been better for it. Joseph Breen could have improved this film greatly.

The movie was very good but father Stu long was way better then the movie. The movie is R rated for a reason. The F word was overdone. But still a good movie.

I saw that the "Fr. Stu" movie is rated "R". This is inappropriate for a Catholic themed film.

Rated R due to language. I was a therapist of juvenile delinquents and court mandated adult males. That’s their world. How can I help if I don’t accept them? I came to love them. So grateful for their being in my life. They changed me. I’m still the sweet lady in church every Sunday and I still don’t cuss or swear but they filled my heart with Gods love. Please don’t judge, look for the heart and soul within.

@@Donna-cc1kt I made no judgement against anyone. I can accept others without caving in to their sinful behavior. The world wants us to "go along to get along". That is not a Christian standard. I trust that your good influence caused some of the criminals you worked with to repent and follow Christ.
