Both sounded very good. The Peavey sounded a bit brighter and more articulate. The Squier sounded warmer with just a hint of fuzz and a slightly deeper tone. I don't think you could go wrong with either. I enjoyed the playing very much. More please.
Did you have the same strings on both guitars? You could adjust the tone on the Peavey and make it sound like the Squier, but you can't make the Squier sound like the Peavey brightness.
10:16 the Peavey is surprisingly better sounding, with a richer warmer tone. The Squire is close but sounder a bit more brassy and annoying hints of unnecessary noise. Great comparison and playing. Every time the Peavey came on it was a tad better sounding.
Great Vid! I actually own both. My Squire Affinity has all single coils and I just picked up a Raptor EXP Plus a few weeks ago. I have to say I really find myself playing the Raptor a lot more these days. Hard driving Dirty Crunch Kills! Clear Clean tones when necessary! Thanks for posting.
As a lifelong musician but newbie to electric guitar considering a budget purchase, this is one of the best, most educational vids I've seen on budget electric guitars to date. Learned a lot not just about the differences in their sounds, but in how to actually produce different kinds of sounds. Thanks for taking the time to make this vid!
I think they both sounded good, but personally I prefer the Squier. It sounded both fuller and brighter. I know that someone of a contradiction but that’s the way it sounded to me. Excellent playing and I’m curious what amplifier you were using.
I just picked up a $50 Peavey predator. HHS pick ups with three pots and a five way selector.. I picked it up in November/2022 from craigslist with a gig bag strap and a capo. Zero fret ware.. it needed a lot more than a complete set up The fret ends were way out/sharp. Fret sprout. I spent three hours filing the Frets.. rosewood fingerboard was dry. I cleaned the fingerboard and polished the fritz with steel wool and then I use linseed oil sparingly on the fretboard.. it has two string trees, but they are not lined up from the nut to the tuner in a straight line. The intonation was close. I had to set the relief. It’s been a while since I had a guitar with a non-blocked whammy bar. I usually block mine, and I think I’m gonna block this one too. I pre-stretched the strings, and getting it to go into tune because I was fighting the whammy bar springs, took a long time.. The frets were level. All of the electrics work without dust noise when I turn the pots The biggest issue I had was, the neck is not attached to the body straight. I had to loosen all for neck screws, sit on the body while it was on the end, and pull on the neck while tightening the screws. The sixth string was drifting about 12,000’s towards the edge of the neck difference between the nut and the last fret.. i’m not done with it yet comment at this moment I’ve only owned the guitar for about 18 hours. It sounds good through my fender cyber twin. The H neck pick up is very bright, compared to the neck and center single coil pick ups.. I am shocked at the quality of the tuners. They are smooth, and turning them a little bit loosens or tightens the string a little bit smoothly in both directions. I’m very surprised about the tuners.. this guitar has a maple neck, a Strat style input jack, rosewood fingerboard, it’s a little bigger and the neck is a little wider than a Yamaha Pacifica which I love the Yamaha Pacifica guitars. I like the Pacifica better than a fender Strat which I’ve had five Strat’s, and I always end up flipping them.. I just am not a Strat fan. I know a Strat will stand up to a grueling schedule for a pro playing four or five nights a week. but I have not played out since the virus shut everything down.. I actually have four PV amplifiers, but I never had one of their guitars until now. like I said it needed a set up and the frets needed ground down and the neck needed loosened and shifted in the socket and then re-tightened.. this Peavey predator guitar was obviously made to a price point. But for 50 bucks,Now I have a guitar then I can let my three Young grandchildren play with instead of my good stuff..
Nice video, Johan! Nice tone from both guitars. For my ears the Squier has more gain and a bit more brightness but the Raptor isn't that far behind with some nice raspy tone. What strings gauge did you use?
Hey Jeff ! Thank you ! Yeah to me they sound a bit different indeed, I agree the Squier has more gain and more brightness, a bit more "scooped" when the Raptor is a touch more generous with the mids ? Different characters but I may talk about that in an other video maybe :) I use Harley Benton strings 10-46 !
Just ordered a raptor! I'm on a budget and had no guitar of my own anymore. Both sound pretty nice for the price. I also had that same Strat. Affinity series is a good budget guitar, but I wanted something a little uncommon this time.
Selling each used will get you about $100 for a nice Affinity and less for a Peavey. I have owned and set up and sold and played both. My view makes no difference, so I say get a USED Peavey and know how to do all the basic cleanup and setup ( nut slots, adjust saddles and pickups, etc.) and keep it as plenty 'good enough' to play at open mic night or small gigs locally. MOST all guys CANNOT set up a guitar and cannot tell you what the '3rd fret test' is...), so learn the basics and skip a setup guy repeatedly at $40-70 per episode)... do it yourself! The H S S Peavey comes with a 4-wire Humbucker at the bridge set up for 2 wires only, so you can coil split it with a push/pull pot and simple rewire.
I have the Peavey Raptor and thinking about buying the Squier. Is the Squier more comfortable to play? I am finding the peavey is not easily playable. I'm looking for better playability. Should I get the Squier or move to the Fender Mexican Player series?
I own both but Bass guitars both are fantastic. The Peavey is a bit more refined and better finished. On this demo the Squire is warm and dark and the Peavey bright and lighter so I suppose to comes down to your likes. But both are excellent starter guitars. I would trust Peavey a bit more to play well out of the box
Hey ! Thank you ! :) I must admit I'm not digging the Affinity much...I acually prefer the Bullet ;) The Peavey to me is a better guitar than the Affinity but that's just me ! And it has some kind of unique vibe to it, which is surprising for a budget guitar like this. Are you in the look for an HSS specifically ? Cheers !
Hey Kunal ! Well I'd say it all depends on what you're looking for : a little practice amp, quiet & easy to carry around ? Or something that could work in a jam/band context ? What would be your budget approximately ? Cheers !
@@JohanJoosLaur Well I'm not planning to buy an amp to be in a band, just a one that could be solid in sound which can make my squire sound good because you already know that this guitar is not really that good in terms of sound so amp can make it better I guess. Plus looking for an amp which is good for rock and metal also because have heard that cheap amps don't come good this type.
HELP PLS I don't know if I should get the Peavey Raptor Plus guitar or the Yamaha eg112 that comes with the gigmaker pack :( PD. I play acoustic and I've never played an electric guitar before, it will be my first time getting one
hola una consulta que calibre de cuerdas utilizas?, me ofrecen una peavey del mismo modelo y se escucha espectacular, queria saber ademàs si aconsejas ponerle clavijero con trabas para que no desafinen en las estiradas de cuerda. gracias
i’m not an expert but the peavy sounds more balanced. the squire sounds like it has more mid and it jumps out at you. the peavy just sounds flat but in a good way. maybe it’s the recording or maybe i’m biased cause i own a peavy but i prefer the peavy sound

Thank you so much Gary for the kind words ! I agree with everything you said about the tones of the guitars :)
La peavey sin dudarlo tiene mucho más groove
Y eso k son pastillas cerámicas si no me ekivoco
Pero la peavey parece más alnico
Both of them sound superb, I'd pick the Squier for blues and the Peavey for rock. Excellent demo.

Awesome playing Johan!!! just got a peavey, all excited👍✝️🎸
how is it?
I preferred the Raptor plus because it had hints of the tone of a telecaster as well .

The Peavey DEFINITELY sounds better!! Thanks for the review!!

Definitely a difference but only just considering the price difference 👏👏
Hey Tom ! Yeah definitely a difference but can't say which one I prefer to be honest aha !! Maybe the Peavey actually !
2 really wonderful guitars. Fender strat quality for much less moola.
I have both guitars, the Peavey sounds a little better and clean tone, plus it stays in tune better. Both great guitars for the budget.
Your rhythm is on point brother. Nice

best advice it is true Squire will resell ahead of Peavey so there will be value to be had for used peaveys, maybe add a few things to it
Johan, thanks for the video, great interpretation, If you compare the peavey with a yamaha 112, which one would you choose?
Yamaha
Peavey
That Squire sounds pretty doggone good!
Una pregunta, has usado irig 1 con efectos con esas guitarras y si es asi, se oye bien?

It looks to me both are very very close! I guess that I could not realize the difference in a blind testing context..

The peavey lacks bass and sustain. Those pots probably don’t help. The squire needs a richer sounding set of pickups to bring out the best in it.
Which are the best budget amps to buy for playing mainly rock but also other genres too.?
Hey Kunal ! Well I'd say it all depends on what you're looking for : a little practice amp, quiet & easy to carry around ? Or something that could work in a jam/band context ? What would be your budget approximately ? Cheers !

Yo uso 10/46 marca PRS y suenan increíbles, parecidas a estas HB

Peavy raptor is Winner...
Yes! Much more warmer and soft tone
Nice playing
009 or 010 strings?
10/46
Asi se prueba una guitarra
Both sound about the same to me but the guitarist is awesome
Every guitar should sounds well in your hands.
Peavey has that Spanky top end
the peavy raptor is made in china?
No it's Korea
Squier but peavey not far behind
