  • Many recreational golfers don't really understand what their golf handicap index means and what it says about their game, so I explain the concept of potential versus average scores. Also, I get into why the handicap system measures the same scores differently on different courses and different days.

The comment I have seen ref potential V what you score is you will play to handicap 20% of your rounds.
I look at the comp scores for my club, now we are seeing greens firm up. winter golf stableford scores winners low / mid 40 points 95% allowance.
      Summer high 30’s points
Strokeplay only a few players sub par with their net scores then a good number 1-6 shots over par with a mix of handicaps.
I like the system and the taking of your index to other courses and it adjusts allowance.
The maths and using that days scores to adjust course difficulty I’ll leave to the computer

Because it is actually complicated. There are rules limiting the maximum Score per hole that is used for handicapping that depend on your handicap index. At 25 H’cap that is for me 4 over par on any hole. This is shown on the computer when I look at my round and see a score lower than what’s on my card.

@@xy-pk8gb well being honest I have not looked too closely at the index for the hole and how my score has been tweaked for handicap purposes.
At 25 index allowance is 29 shots then depending on index I’ll get 2 shots in some holes.
I’ve looked at a card on my England golf where I shot 111 but for handicap 3 shots taken off. I can see where the 3 shots have been taken off but there are other holes with low index that I possibly could have lost more shots on so no idea how it’s working.
I don’t worry about it too much as the aim is to try and get my index into the teens and be consistent at bogey golf or better. I can do it for a good portion in the round but too often 3-4 holes of double bogey or worse. Same as so many golfers really, crazy game can come off a green pleased with a bogey which is a good score because you have recovered well, or walk off annoyed with a bogey because you have hit a poor shot or 3 putted.

My handicap seems to indicate that I should play game improvement clubs. However, I strike the ball well enough to be able to hit a player’s club and so I shop them. I’m always asked “what’s your handicap?” when I want to try a set of less forgiving clubs.
My problem isn’t hitting the sweet spot. I hit fat, left, right…my handicap doesn’t represent my ball striking, it represents my ability to really blow up a few holes every round. I really loved the Ping Blueprint S and the PXG 317 CB models when I tried them.

Golf is a game of several skills that don't always correlate. So a person who drives the ball well, doesn't necessarily putt well. So there are plenty of golfers who look good off the tee who don't necessarily score well and visa versa. Hence the old saying, drive for show, putt for dough.

One of the issues is the difference between general play and competition. I play a lot of golf, high handicapper 26, but if I look at my eclectic scores for the two courses I play off the yellows I have the potential to shoot sub par or just over par rounds. I have yet to break 90 in a full round but have recorded low 40’s for 9 holes.
In competitions my scoring is worse a mix of the longer holes and technique crumbling due to tension. Stableford comps help me as a bad hole is just nil points, strokeplay a bad hole blows the card.
Just shot 44 for 9 holes which is 5 shots less than my handicap allowance, card is submitted I wait to see the impact on my WHI

@@rickoliveira3807 I post the shots I take, sadly I can be bouncing along nicely bogey or better golf then have a 7,8,9 etc.
the maximum score is not a double bogey but actually 2 over a double bogey. I always thought for h cap purposes it was a double bogey, but using the HowDidiDo computer at the club if I have picked up on a hole in a stableford round the comp sets the score as an 8 on a par 4 with an asterix to denote the system is allocating that score.
For strokeplay it does the same so if I take a 9 or worse it amends the score for handicap
      Purposes.

I think the old system was more a measure of your ability - on a better than average day - (capability, if you like) whereas the new system is now more a measure of your average performance.
Across the v large number of club golfers that I play with their new WHS handicap (translated into course handicap) is higher than their old handicap and the winning scores in competitions have stepped up (e.g. from 39/40 as a winning score to 42/43 now being the winning score in a large field).
So we tend to say that the old system measured ability (on a good day) and the new system measures average performance.

Great explanation, didn't know about course rating and slope applications. I'm wondering about one thing I've always believed about handicap: The number applies to how many strokes you get on a given hole from hard to easy. i.e., if my handicap is 10 (my guess at my current hc btw), then I would get a stroke on the 10 hardest holes. If it was 20, I would get a stroke on the 16 easiest holes and 2 each on the 2 hardest. Is this true?

    • @ryanballengeegolf

That's right, you get a stroke on each hole before you get a second (or third now!) on another. So for the 19th stroke, it gets added to the No. 1 handicap hole, and then it goes from there

Oh yeah, wouldn't it be great if I could finish every round with (currently) 4 under par? But wouldn't it be kind of boring in the long run to always ‘know’ that you're playing 4 under?
Take our last holiday in Egypt (Soma Bay) for example: one day I played 3 under par (with only a light wind), the day before (with the usual really strong sea breeze) 5 over par, the day after 2 over, then exactly even par., after that 4 over. There are golf courses where I regularly play 6 or 7 under par, other courses where I'm always over par. That's what makes playing golf exciting and gives you fun. And to try to confirm good resuilts or to make it better next time.
Unfortunately, as a ‘family of golfers’ - my wife (HCP 5), I and 7 kids between 5 and 16 years of age -, we know too many people who have no sense what the HCP really means and what it says or even how it is calculated. These are the people you regularly see on the courses literally freaking out because they think they are ‘failing’.

An example might help. Let's say the course is hard. For the tees you are playing today the slope is 145 and most importantly the rating is 76. A scratch would only be expected to shoot 76, not 72.
An 18 or bogey golfer will shoot much higher than 90. The 76 is relative to 72 or even 70 on a US Open course. The 145 slope is relative to, if memory serves, 132, the slope of a course the USGA thinks is average. So again if memory serves, the bogey golfer who shoots 90 on a 132 slope course may very well be expected to shoot 13 strokes higher, or 103. And that seems about right.
When I first started playing in my 20's I played 5 days a week, 54 holes from Friday to Sunday and some 9 hole rounds after work during the week. My best round that year was a 75 on an easy course, probably a 120 slope. I had a 78 on a longer, harder course maybe mid 130's. I took a vacation week where I played 7 courses in 7 days. I shot no worse than 81 on any of them, except when I played a 145 slope course. My score was 95. I was devastated and very confused. I didn't understand slope then. Better now.

What a handicap really says to me is one day your a little better than your handicap says and on the other days it may be worse than what it is. That’s called inconsistency and the reason your inconsistent is simple your instruction is inconsistent or in layman’s terms the instruction your getting wasn’t designed to make you a better player. That’s why very few improve and will never improve but will shoot that one exceptionally good round every once in a while but most times they are the product of their instructions or lack there of.

    • @BatMan-oe2gh
      @BatMan-oe2gh 3 месяца назад

It also depends on how often one plays. If a person is only playing once a month, then they will be more inconsistent than a person who plays twice a week. It also comes down to how a person is feeling that day, might be a little tired, or not feeling 100%. It is not instruction based. Even Pros have bad days and shoot high scores. The system is flawed. Establishing a handicap from the "up" tees will naturally inflate a handicap. Then when playing a match, player will het inflated handicap (based on higher differential from the up tees) and also distance. Almost impossible to neat with a handicap established from other tees.

You didn’t even mention hard and soft caps, another method keeping a 15 from ever beating a single digit. I actually had a guy from Mass golf tell me that the single digit guys at my club would not take kindly to a golfer whose handicap went up over three strokes in a season. When I wrote him, my average scores had gone from 90 to 95. I was playing awful, but if my handicap was allowed to go up over 3 strokes, I would have been considered a sandbagged. We all know who makes the rules , club pros and single digit players. Tournament s are their domain.

In my humble opinion, the handicap system is crap. I played an open competition last Sunday, only 7 players played to par or better (net) out of a field of 175 golfers, yet the CSS remained at 69. In my view there is not enough adjustment to reflect playing conditions on the day, and by that I mean easy scoring and difficult scoring days. The problem is, because of these casual round score entries it’s impossible to make the adjustment every time you play. Casual round scores should not count towards your handicap, full stop. Too much ability to put in false scores, I never post a score for handicap other than in medal play, and that’s how it should be.

    • @rickoliveira3807
      @rickoliveira3807 3 месяца назад +1

Philosophically I agree that match play scores should not be posted because it is a very different game than medal play and I frankly don't care at all how many total strokes I take in match play. However, as someone recently pointed out to me... match play events utilize our overall handicap index which includes all scores so there's not really an alternative... except for manipulating the system by only posting selected scores as you do.

I dont like the fact that if you train hard to become a better golfer you get punished in matches or competitions if you have to compete against a weekend warrior.
