No auto tune, no computerized instruments. Just pure talent and musicianship. Add to that, what passes for music now is not heartfelt. It's about money, fame, hate. The music of this time was about feelings, mostly love, whether it was for a lover or the entirety of humanity.

A fav! @2:30 George Benson did a sped-up cover (which always makes me wonder if he purposely ignored the BALLAD part of the title 😁). K-Ci & Jo-Jo (from Jodeci and "All My Life" fame) also covered it. It's also been sampled a lot, for sure. For example, "Teardrops and Closed Caskets" by 2Pac and Outlawz (1999)
