Maria gives off the vibe of "I've achieved my dream...but what it really what I wanted?" She says she's devoted her life to being the most fearsome creature of the seas, but even as she doubts if this was truly wanted, she decides to double down instead of trying to find love.

      Thats an accurate read.
I got a bit of Voltaire's "When you're evil" vibes off her.
Like, she's also got vibes of a career woman, that still enjoys the fruits of her labors even if she's sacrificed things.

I kind of wonder if she wanted to be the most fearsome sea monster because she wanted people to be afraid of her, or because she wanted her name to be known around the world. She couldn't have fame so she settled for infamy.

    • @GanonGhidorah
      @GanonGhidorah Год назад +1

That's what I find _so irritating_ about her episode. Because it _seemed_ like that's where they were going...only to hard 180.
I half expected the middle of her song to suddenly turn to her regretting her misspent life, like Jack's Lament from a Nightmare Before Christmas.
Cala always struck me as a misunderstood girl who wants to find happiness; but people treat her like some kind of sea monster, due to her size and strange nature. But here, she seems to _revel_ in the idea of being a monster. It's not right.

@@GanonGhidorah I actually prefer it that way, because I feel its so much more complex. I think it makes her more interesting to have her so caught up in the monstrous pride, she represses the feelings of unhappiness and loneliness.
Instead of bluntly stating "Oh I'm actually secretly miserable", her sadness is more subtle. In the parts where she begins to lament and it starts getting sadder, it's cut off by sudden rage and her proudly proclaiming how she's a star.
She's lonely, but yet she would much rather be feared than a nobody.

I do have a counter argument of "the kidnapping wasn't as strong as it could have been" but before I do, I do agree that they could have made the brothers show more soft moments to make it more hard on the viewer but how I see it is them fighting and then mugman getting kidnapped also has potential to be heartbreaking. Let me put this in perspective; the brothers got along a lot more in the 1st season right? They fought more during the second, or ig 1b, that's when Mugman gets kidnapped, imagine your brother AND best friend gets kidnapped and the last thing you got to do was just fight with each other. No goodbyes or any soft moments could have comforted Cuphead or Mugman in that situation so I argue that it's just as bitter for the kidnapping scene. Also what if we get to see the bad ending version of the cup brothers or just mugman in season 3? I feel like that would be pretty neat and would make for tons of good plot opportunities.

To answer your question regarding Dice and the demons, the Devil says in the episode whoever brings him Cuphead's soul WON'T be destroyed. And obviously at first Dice thinks he doesn't have to join in on it given his little talk. But when it's made clear that yes, HE DOES have to, Dice clearly panics. It more or less becomes a competition for one's life. So, why not take out the other demons before they can get that soul so you can be the sole victor.

A lot of people in the fandom are theorizing that the reason the cup bro's fought so much this drop is because the Devil is going to use all the grievances that Cuphead has caused to Mugman to turn him into Vile Mugman, and fight against Cuphead

The ending felt a lot like “You never know what’s important to you until you lose it.” Which seemed to be laid on pretty heavy with the devil saying “You have taken something of great value to me so I shall take something of great value to you.” With Cuphead replying with “Hah, there’s nothing you can take away from me that I care about.” Before realizing that the devil kidnapped Mugman. So to me all of their fighting and bickering seems like the writers setting up an arc for Cuphead to learn to value his brother more. Because you never know what’s truly important to you until it’s gone.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!! Lost in the Woods is, in my brutally honest opinion, the WORST episode in the season! It's spits in the face of a previous episode where Cup and Mug got some character development in understanding the extremes in one another, with Mugman learning not to be too overprotective, and Cuphead learning to be more sensible. Lost in the Woods took such a sharp u-turn on that development that the highway that is between it and the brothers episode collapsed on itsself from the car pile up!

In the writers' defense (and for that of personal opinion), I think that was supposed to show how much of a jerk Cuphead was becoming, and this is gonna be coming back to haunt him, more than his soul debt. I mean, Sasha Waybright went through *alot* of stuff just to become who she is now (Cuphead does remind me a little of how Anne Boonchuy used to be), and this could be the start of his true character development

@@ag-13studios51 I get what you're saying, and I would agree with the defense of the writer, had not my point still stood about continuity. It doesn't change the fact Cuphead did a moonwalk on his relationship development with Mugman and he-he'd out the door that lead to that development. At least Sasha's development was consistent in Amphibia, she didn't go back on her development via sharp u-turn. In other words, there's no defending the writers when it comes to such obviously bad continuity.

As far as King Dice is concerned, I think he is still fired. From what I remember of the episode, Dice was the only one who referred to himself as Devil's #1. When he first made his entrance, I remember the Devil saying something along the lines of, "Oh, you're still here?" That seems to tell me that not only is Dice still fired, he really doesn't have an important position among the Devil's ranks. Like he's been just sticking around, trying to weasel his way back into the Devil's good graces. It would explain why he took out the Devil's 3rd best demons in the maze, he's trying to get his old position back.

This comment was from another video, but my points here still stand
Ep. 12 was Cuphead at his worse. He had his bad moments beforehand, but he was NEVER as bad as he was here, to the point i actually think it's a bit OoC.
I like how the overall arc of this season is how Mugman has to constantly pick up the slack for Cuphead & Cuphead being too carefree for his own good, almost as if he knows that his little bro will help him when things go south... THEN comes the ending where Cuphead made the mistake of pissing off the Devil more than ever, but now can't rely on his little brother to help him out of this situation. For the first time in probably his whole life, Cuphead isn't just worried... He's TERRIFIED... & He doesn't know what the hell to do. It's not an original story arc by any means, but it definitely works for a show like this & with a pair of brothers like these 2.
Also, i love how they gave a GOOD in-universe reason as to why the Devil didn't attack Cuphead this season that often. First thing he had to do is WAIT for his fur to grow back after getting electrocuted by the anti-satan sweater, but when he finally recovered & got reminded of Cuphead, he FINALLY decided that enough was enough & tried sending his best forces to go after Cuphead & when THAT fails, Devil decides to take it upon himself to get Cuphead's soul... ONLY for him to learn that he can't legally do that anymore since Cuphead's Soul Dept has expired LITERALLY on the same day as the events of Ep. 8 happened, effectively giving The Devil a really good reason to not attack the duo after this point anytime soon.
Then in the finale, it's more of a REACTION encounter than a PROACTIVE encounter like the previous ones. Because he lost his trident- oh, i'm sorry, pitchfork, that led to Cuphead getting it, which eventually led The Devil to find him so he could get it back... ONLY for him to learn that the pitchfork zaps him whenever he tries to touch him, which MAY imply that the pitchfork has a Mjolnir-like system, where it can only be wielded by someone the weapon deems it worthy. Likely because of losing a soul & not retrieving it before the dept expired... POSSIBLY for the first time ever, the pitchfork started rejecting the Devil once the dude lost it. So the Devil thought to use the *"2 Can play THAT game"* card by taking the one thing that kept Cuphead alive for as long as he lived: Mugman. Even thought he couldn't get his soul legally anymore, he was still able to take something extremely important to him & get the last laugh, like a true villain.
Overall, this season was AMAZING. the first one was already pretty good, but this one just blow it out of the park like it's nothing, it's THAT fucking good!

Alright before I start I just want to say that this comment is just for FUN, not because I ABSOLUTELY think that this is the case but because I'm bored and have had these thoughts about the characters of the show since season two was released that i WANT to write about just because I want to.
Now I want to talk about the two main characters and how they changed in this season. I also want to talk about the symptoms of certain mental disorders they COULD have.
Now lets reflect on the characters BEFORE season 2, and what changes they faced. In season one we were being introduced to the characters of the show. The first episode wastes NO time in showing us their flaws and desires. It shows in a matter of seconds that Cuphead is an impulsive troublemaker, leaping before he acts, and never thinking about his consequences (these are his flaws), but he wants to have fun, and shown in season two doesnt like being confined to one place, wanting as much freedom and enjoyment he can out of life (these are his desires). However he obvoiusly cares deeply about those close to him.
However in season 1 these were palpable and based on the innocent desire of wanting to just have fun. In season 2 however shows how prison canged him drastically. He's a lot more impulsive, but also more irritable.
It's not just mugman who changed, he changed as well, and I wanted to just point that out. While mugmans is much more obvious due to being mostly played for laughs, Cuphead shows some more subtle but still present changes as well. And who could blame them, being sent to prison changes people. They were exposed to violence and not to mention, they are CHILDREN. Children with still developing minds can easily be influenced by the outside world.
It's obvious to point out that he shows VERY high symptoms of ADHD:
(Low sense of danger, forgetfulness, carelessness, unable to concentrate on tasks and/or activities, avoids and dislikes doing activities that require mental concentration or strain (like doing chores), runs and behaves in ways not appropriate for ones age, Is often "on the go", Fidgets feet or taps hands (he mostly fidgets his feet), and is unable to sit still, some socially innapropriate behaviors (saying literal words while burying the worm, appearing rude or disrespectful, having difficulty listening to others), and of course a lack of self-control)
After he and his brother escapes prison these are merly enhanced. I also want to talk about his nightmare in "Sweater Off Dead". It starts with being a normal morning, Elder Kettle is making pancakes, Cuphead catches them, mugman doesn't, and all of a sudden a GIANT GREEN WALL MONSTER TAKES HIS BROTHER AWAY FROM HIM? The elder kettle collapses in a pile of bones, this ultimately leaves him alone and vulnerable as the devil (first desguised as the goat from the front yard) comes and takes his soul, scaring him awake.
What happened there?! Now I need to remind you, this wasn't the devils doing, this was an insight of Cupheads psyche on the situation and how he feels about it. It reminds us that despite all the adventure and the laid back way he ignores he's in danger, he's still just a child whos scared, and whos fragile, scared of what he sees as the "boogieman", a irrational and imaginative monster created by vulnerable and soft children. Innocent children who dont know any better. Unlike the game, this kid just wanted to have fun with his brother, he didnt know the consequneces while taking his streak.
Back to the dream. It happens in a sequence of events. It starts off as a normal day, this was this way in the first episode, then it shows cuphead still catching the pancakes and mugman failing, showing despite his longing for fun and adventure he still loves and cherishes his home life and family and wouldn't change it. Now Mugman peels off a pancake off the wall, which could represent how Mugman realized the dangers before cuphead did, he literally "peeled" away the guise of a happy carnival. Then it shows a monster taking mugman away, this could show him being scared that his brother might get hurt, but it could also show his dependence on Mugman and how much he fears for his family. Look at his reaction before his brother is taken away, look at the horror and mixture of emotions in his eyes, he's literally frozen in shock (which sounds like a certain episode finale ending).
Then he tries to get his brother back by pounding on the wall, when nothing happens, he calls out for the other person he depends on, Elder Kettle, only for him to turn around, showing him dead. Nothing more than a pile of bones now useless for advice. He of course cries out in horror before the goat smashes into the house and speaks to him, asking him if he remembered him (which could be Cuphead reminding himself about his danger with the devil), he replies thinking its the goat, only for it to turn into the devil, stating the whole "your soul is mine" stuff leading him to falling into the devils laughing mouth (note: stated by mugman, he's had those nightmares MULTIPLE times, he could be subconciously reminding himself and possibly berating himself for the dangers he put not only himself in but his family as well). He then wakes up and screams something VERY intresting:
"I ain't to worried about it."
Why is this interesting? Because it's what he says daily. When he launches a cannon full of paint on elder kettle, which gets him "steaming", as mugman puts it. When his brother reminds him of his debt. When he makes his family lose all the firewood. How are all of these similar? It's used in stressful situations. That phrase is a COPING MECHANISM he uses to avoid facing stressful situations or acknowledging his mistakes. It's not just a catchphrase, it's a thing he says to avoid realizing "hey what you did will cause you to get hurt", he noticably says it in a laid back manner when people comment on HIM, or when HE'S in danger of being hurt or killed, when it happens to those he loves, or as the nightmare shows even when he thinks about it, he freaks out and gets worried as hell. Compare him waking up from the nightmare and saying it to all the other times he said it. The other times he's nonchalent about it, but the nightmare one, he says it in a panicked and terrified way, as if trying to convince himself that everything will be fine, that they wont be hurt.
But the ending proved him very wrong, everything was NOT fine, and they did get hurt, all because of him being impulsive and ignorant. The last thing we see is the horror and shock on his face, and he doesn't say what he usually says. He only meekly says the name of the person he now lost because of his stubborness and cockiness with Big D.
I know he's a cartoon character, but I always love looking deeply in the characters of shows I love, helps me sympathize and love them even more. He's not just a trope of the impulsive character from the 50s, he has a lot more depth than that, he's just a kid, with deep trauma, not just from having his literal soul almost being taken from him several times, but also time from prison.
Whew! This is really long so if y'all want I'll try to "analyze" Mugman too in another comment. Now if you all will excuse me, I'm gonna go take a nap. Im tired.
Edit: I recently put in Cuphead having a decrease in sympathy, and I realize after rewatching some episodes that that isn't the case. I was assuming he had a decrease in sympathy, but that was just his usual impulsive trait, if not more impulsive, and he's just chaotic in general but he never intends to hurt anyone. Mugman is another thing, he does but then his anger gets the best of him and...Well.... Anyway a thing I noticed is that he's more willing to give others the benefit of the doubt, and is a bit more understanding then the two brothers. And he shows moments of sympathy throughout the second season. Showing remorse when he impulsively eats Mugmans candy. Showing concern for bowl boy when the bowl gets launched on the rocket. Believing that Chalice was still their friend even after she fearfully abandoned them to get arrested and gives her the benefit of the doubt. And quickly forgiving Mugman, understanding his actions, and knowing he would've done the same thing if it was him. Just a thing I wanted to add. And before all of you comment about THAT episode where he was a dick, I honestly do agree that he was a jerk, but I honestly think it was just filler, cause he changes in the next episode after that, being his usual impulsive self, but still shows care towards Mugman (which is confusing as hell). It's also suddenly summer too, even though it was winter in "Lost in the Woods". So that might've been months ago, and it obviously doesn't have any purpose in the story other than to mimick the ant and the grasshopper.
Edit 2: I think we were meant to hate him in this season. In season one we got equal screentime of both of the brothers, season 2 however was mostly just Mugman. Maybe they meant to attach us to mugman so it'd be more emotional and heartbreaking. Then in season three, when he (HOPEFULLY) gets some freaking character development we'd mostly get screentime of him, and make us attached to him too. He has the pitchfork, a very powerful weapon, his actions and choices will obviously be important in the next season. I also like the theories of the pitchfork deeming him more worthy than the Devil, not just because it's funny that it choose a child over a proffesional wielder, but also because it could have a reason. Maybe he has more potential, maybe he has a source of power stronger than the devil (perhaps his brotherly love?), maybe cause the Devil proved himself unworthy because he failed to catch ONE simple soul and thinks that Cuphead would do a better job, and SO MANY OTHER POSSIBILITIES.

We all liked the fanservice, but honestly, this season was MOOHGMAHN's season! (read it in Ludwig's ridiculous pronunciation of Mugman)! His facial expressions were friggin' hilarious (I still crack the hell up at the "There's always glue" moment), he lost his marbles more than I could count and the show didn't make him the butt of all jokes but rather he was on equal footing with his brother when it comes to causing and suffering slapstick.

I did enjoy the latest offerings of this show, although I am surprised to learn that people were shipping Mugman and Cala Maria before the latter's debut in the show. And the continuity is a bit over the place, as Kettle grounded the boys for life after they escaped prison, yet once they were out of the cottage, Kettle did jack squat about it. Hopefully with the Delicious Last Course content being added to the game, they can implement it in the show.

The one thing I hated abt Cala Maria’s story is that she said she just doesn’t want to date…… but then they hint at her liking someone… which SUCKS.
Because Cala Maria could’ve been an awesome Aromantic character but that didn’t happen because… just because…
I was really hoping there’d be a moment where she was happy and flattered but just rejected him anyway because she isn’t a fan of dating.
They made her not dating seem like a sad thing?? Like, I’m a hopeless romantic but MAN I hated this…
Yes, give her a story where she finally has someone who isn’t afraid of her and sees her as beautiful just the way she is… but mayyyyybe don’t make it… this?

7:48 I personally have a different idea as to how his episode could have ended:
Cuphead and Elder Kettle come back from their errand trip. They walk into the living room to see Mugman reading a book (a different one than the one he was reading in the episode).
They talk about their day, Mugman brings up how the Ice-Cream Man rolled around for a bit, etc.
Elder Kettle asks what the boys want for dinner; to which Mugman replies, "No thank you. I just ate." Cuphead is a little mad, asking Mugman what he had before they came back; and it all kinda of seems normal and happy at first.
Until we cut to a scene out in the woods, where we see the partially buried outfit of the Ice-Cream Man.
(This ending being more morbid or funnier is completely up to you)

I also didn't like how Cuphead and Mugman were almost fighting in every episode in this season. I understand that they are siblings and that they are complete opposites, but in comparison to the previous season they were a lot more empaphetic to eachother and you could see their brotherly love , I mean heck Mugman made that invicible sweater that protected Cuphead's soul from the Devil. I also wish that Mr King Dice and the Devil could get more focused episodes.
Outside of this I had blast watching this season🤩 mainly because of the bosses, since that's exactlly what I wanted from the Cuphead show.

For one thing, King Dice has always been self absorbed and arrogant (he did call himself the host with the most in the mirror in season 1),and for two I thought the reason why King Dice went to the underworld in the first place was to charm his way into being the Devil's number 1 again and maybe get his job back. Maybe they should have done a reverse with the cup bros relationship: Have most of the season of them displaying brotherly love while have them fight at crucial moments (say Lost in the Woods) and have the season finale with them very much at each other's throats. Like, keep the plot of Cuphead playing around with the Devil's pitchfork, but with Mugman being cautious of the consequences of wielding it. Maybe Mugman gets punished for Cuphead's antics by the townsfolk, which wouldn't be a stretch as the townsfolk were gearing to dish out punishment on the cup bros in the place of Ms. Chalice.
This could give Cuphead a sense of the gravity of his reckless actions and how much his brother had to endure.

I was a fool for thinking I could go the entire video without spoilers about the end of the last episode

My favourite episodes are High Seas Adventure and Unleash the Demons. The former for obviously cala and brineybeard (cala obviously stealing the show) and i'm a really glad they didn't completely go for the cala x mugman route and its kinda cute that they just made mugman have a childhood crush on her (never liked the ship given that mugs is heavily implied to be a child and cala being an adut). And the latter i have a bias for with King Dice. Wayne Brady kills it yet again and he (dice) may have had a smaller roll but damn didn't he steal the show when he was on-screen.

I agree with your criticisms on this season, so much so that they kind of ruined it for me. By the time we got to Lost in the Woods, I was so done with Cuphead and Mugman arguing that I couldn't get any enjoyment out of the episode. The only episodes I thoroughly enjoyed were the ones with the Devil in them. And there were only two. I did love High Seas Adventure, but I'd honestly rank it behind some of the episodes from Season 1 like the pilot, the two sweater episodes, and Dirt Nap. I wish I could have like this season more, but it just didn't hit me like Season 1 did

I could have wrote this comment, glad I'm not the only one who thought the same. One of the things I like the most in the first batch of episodes was how the brothers had each others back all the time despite their bickering and differences. As in season 1b, they were almost constantly arguing over nothing. Cuphead was especially unbearable this season, it wasn't even funny

Just a quick theory, maybe there brotherly love will be more frequent in season 3. I think cuphead will be more affectionate after Mugman got stolen.
