I am not sure which nails you are referring to specifically. Spring up nails will split the wood if a pilot hole is not drilled first, not to mention they would be a real bear to hammer in. Tacks are wedged shaped and will split wood quicker than staples. I have upholstered antiques where the wood was split from years and years of reupholstering. In that case the frame rails can be repaired by cutting the damaged part off and gluing on new wood.
