- In 2019 I decided I wanted to learn how to model 3d Graphics and started learning Blender
After doing a basic Blender course I decided to model an iconic spacecraft from Blakes 7.
Originally, I was going to work on the Liberator but during my research I came cross a few excellent rendered models so decided to work on Scorpio instead as I hadn't really come across any 3d model that detailed.
Being extremely new to his process I had no idea what I was letting myself in for and in hindsight this was probably a bit too ambitious for my experience level.
Nevertheless I kept at it and treated this as a long-term project which I came back to from time to time as I learnt more of what I needed to do to complete the project.
I started this project over 2 years ago and it’s finally finished, I give you “Scorpio” the Wanderer Class Planet Hopper.
Brilliant. My favourite Sci-Fi TV series Blake's 7.
Well now. Very nice.
Wow! Excellent achievement. I've been a fan of the ship since 1981, this is excellent.
Good god that's stunning! Never seen Scorpio looking better
Beautiful ship and excellent rendition. But besides Running away, the 7 crew had no advantage let alone weapons.
It was just a vulnerable version of the Millennium Falcon!!!
Bravo! I'm impressed by your work - have had to add it to my favourites list!
Amazing! Well done!
Amazing work.
Amazing detail, even down to the heat shimmer on the engines. Must have take ages to render this!
Agree, great effort. Heat shimmer in space tho?
@@ubermonkirk I know its not accurate to space flight, but I like the effect
@@apollosimages2010. Perhaps whatever is coming out of those engines would shimmer even in space.
@@ubermonkirk What we call heat shimmer is the result of the bending of light waves passing through air that is not uniformly heated. As the light passes through air pockets that have different temperatures (and therefore different densities) the light is bent different amounts, so that the thing we're looking at wavers or shimmers. In space (or a vacuum) there's no medium so if the only thing that's passing through is heat (light waves in the IR spectrum) then there would be no shimmer.
In non-SciFi spacecraft, what engines spit out is a fast-moving particle stream, which can have a varying density ... and therefore if we look through that stream, what little we could see would shimmer. There's no reason not to expect a SciFi space engine to emit a plasma for propulsion, so a shimmer would be expected.
Some beautiful modelling work there!
It's only when I see this now that I realise that the Wanderer Class could fly its way into Elite Dangerous and absolutely look like it belonged there!
I also play E.D. My fav ship is the corvette and it called scorpio.
@@apollosimages2010 Excellent! You're clearly a commander of great taste and refinement!
Nice job. I’m one of the few that actually liked Scorpio more than Liberator. I like that it looks like a baby Star Destroyer, I like that it’s an underdog, I like that it’s basically the Millennium Falcon, gradually getting special modifications to make it better and better. Too bad they had to dump that tachyon funnel!
Every B7 fan goes on about the liberator......but the Scorpio was just so bad ass looking!
Very nice. Love the amount of detail on the model, though I thought the laser cannon was retractable.
In elite dangerous i named my corvette after this ship lol
I did as well☺️
@@apollosimages2010 noice 👌
Join the club :D
I like.
My favourite B7 episode is Stardrive which is punks in space. The scientist puts the drive in Scorpio and Avon lets her fry when it’s turned on Lol 😂
Avon in Top Form " She's dead either way."
Great stuff.
after the Liberator the Scorpio was a real let down, the first time they took off Del Tarrant screaming "Lift you scruffy bag of bolts Lift!" was a great way to introduce the ship and it's less than stellar performance!
I remember seeing Scorpio for the first time and I wasn't overally impressed with it. It didn't help that TV back then was analogue in Standard Definition with low budget effects so most of the surface details on nearly everything wasn't very clear to see.
It was only when I reviewed many images of the model during this project I realised that Scorpio was a work of art and was beautifully detailed which sadly isn't seen on screen which is why I did my best to bering it back restored with as much detail as I could find.
looks really good & nice audio to match.
My favourite ship, as a kid.
It would have been nice to see it in further seasons, maybe receive some upgrades.
My, she may be a bit rusty at the seams, but she's a fine girl once you take a proper look at her.
Incidentally (hurr-durr), I always loved that bit of incidental music, always thought of it as Scorpio's theme, even though we never heard it again. S4's incidental music, especially for space shots, had a much different feel to the other three seasons, it's almost a musical language that translates to this ship for me. That sort of black metal synth organ sound, just feels right to me.
One critique I have, is that my interpretation of the orange paintjob they put on the model always spoke to me of rust. A 200-year-old runabout that looks her age, but nonetheless gets the job done, with the help of an owner that's taken good care of her all these years. I always picutred, not necessarily a ship rusted stem to stern, but a retcon of the studio model, maybe with bronze-ish panels, rusted at the seams, and with scorching from repeated planetary entry on the lower bow. That's how *I* would do it, anyway.
Also, she's missing her headlights, those were so endearing.
I liked the scorpio
Completely inaccurate - there's no fishing line holding it up.
Nob
at least someone designed & built that. Disney just steal their Star Wars ships from
DeviantArt.
is it me or does the Scorpio look like it could fit into the star wars Corellian freighter designs?
Needs a return. Not a remake, a return with new characters. There's a few good fan films (ok, I think two) following that format.Mr Flibble needs to stop glaring at me like that.
Nice!
always thought the Scorpio looked like a knock-off Star Destroyer, but this really shows off how different she is. Gorgeous ship.
For the love of god bring back B7
Nicely detailed. How many polygons?
Approximately 269K
anyone seen a good 3d file of this ship I could print and paint looks so cool loved blake 7
Embarrassed to admit I pined between episodes of this.
It's like getting a hairy but hot girl after you've been with a 10.
These visual effects are CGI, not part of Original series. But pretty Cool nevertheless.
You realise the whole ship was modelled from scratch in blender, so of course its cgi…
lame they got rid of liberator so early on
The set just began to fall apart after three seasons, plus the interiors have a 70s discotheque type look that was beginning to look dated. I think that was the main reason.
@@simonjones7727 the series was being cancelled, the Head of BBC drama saw the final episode where the Liberator was destroyed and really liked it and renewed on the spot, they had to build a new set and design a new ship model to set the show in after that, they built that set to last longer with a lot of steel mesh and more robust fittings, and then cancelled the show 1 season later
