A fact about Misato's OG dub voice was that in-between the original eng dub and before the Rebuild series, she was actually a teacher during retirement after the series ended. Years later, and she's still got it!
One of my favorite little details happens basically right away, Spidey even comments on it - you can see how Shinji feels about his father from the fact that the note and material Gendo sent him were clearly torn apart in frustration, and then taped back together
Since then, he multiple times was on the record saying it is not that straight forward. It is more that he made this things in a certain states of mind, so naturally, they reflect it, to some extend.
I still think Mari is some representation of other people being a positive influence on him, since he wanted her to be a character who didn't represent a facet of him and what her role in the story ultimately ends up being.
As someone that saw the original series as a 14 year old myself, when I was in an difficult age and mental state, I stil do believe that as gruesome as NGE is, this is one of the most important work that were ever made to date. I still remember the feeling I had as I finished the series that time. It war a bit different than I expected at first, but deep down I realized, that this piece of Art touched my broken soul in a way, therapy never could. The series is more delicate, than just torturing Shinji and the others. It plays with the fact, that life itself is filled with constant hardships and confrontations with our demons, and that we never should stop getting up if we are punshed down. At least it is my perspective on it. I rewatch the whole stuff every few years and I am very happy, that the series gets more and more attention like because of normies. Thank you for that. Oh and some additional informations: The Correct order to watch Evangelion is in my opinion: 1. The original series 2. Death and Rebirth 3. End of Evangelion 3. Iron Maiden 4. Rebuild of Evangelion Especially when you read the Manga Iron Maiden, I think it is really obvious to assume that all of this shit happens again and again and again until Rebuild of Evangelion brings it to its final conclusion. Spoiler for those who do not want to read the Manga: At the end it basically ends like EoE, but after that we get an "millenia later" - Event were the Evaseries, that were like pillars mounted at the LCL ocean is petrified. Oh and Mari is a part of the Manga and it is shown, that she seems to be immortal or something. In 1.11 in the End the coffins belong all to Kaworu that gets reborn again and again in this seemingly endless cycle. The Moon also has the red markings from Rei merged with Lilith as she ripped her throadt and sprayed blood on it. It becomes more clear that this is definitely is not just a revisit or remake, but nothing more than a narrative and mental conclusion, both for Hideaki Anno and the viewer, even if not all like this series.
Funny you mention making sure you're in a good headspace when watching Evangelion. It was actually when I was probably at my lowest and had some of the worst mental health that I really enjoyed Eva and realised how special it was. The first time I watched it it didn't click with me but my rewatch was so much better and actually helped me think through a lot of things in my personal life.

I've just started the rebuild movies myself and so I'm looking forward to see how 2-4 shall differ from the series. I've noticed a few differences with the first rebuild movie, and so I'm sure there'll be even more for the rest
I hate it when folks get introduced to the legacy cast through the rushed Amazon redubs, they all gave much better performances under FUNimation. The cast was initially only set to dub the fourth film, but got dragged back to redo the first three not long after, since Amazon either couldn't get the rights to FUNi's dub, or were told/decided to redo those movies again, for whatever reason. The production schedule was really tight (they only had like, three months, if I'm remembering correctly) and a few issues sprung up from recording this remotely (at one point, they lost touch with Misato and Gendo's VA's for nearly a week due a really bad snowstorm in Texas). And all that's without going into this dub's other persistent quirks, like how they rarely dub screams or grunts, or how poor some of the lip-syncing is, or how choppy Rei's audio sounds, etc. This dub is alright, but it's a real mess.
Oof. I didn't know it was that complicated. You reminded me tho-- I do remember seeing the first film on TV, maybe under adult swim or something. I liked the dub back then, but from what I recall, it was a mix of old and new actors right?

Ramiel is like the best thing about this movie. This came out in 2007, the second film: 2.0 came out in 2009, third film: 3.0 came out in 2012 and the final fourth film 3.0 + 1.0 came out in 2021 after massive delays and issues.
a lot of people say the rebuild movie are not a continuation of end of eva but then you see the opening shots of this and there is the red sea like in the final scene of end of eva, the ships that asuka was throwing around in end of eva, and chalk outlines that look like the mass produced eva's
I know you guys aren't used to the VAs but for me this is/was a homecoming! To hear my Shinji Spike Spencer come back and the OG cast many MANY fans hated the Netflix dubbed. They may sound weird to you and thats understandable because you started with the Netflix dub but for lots fans we were sooo happy to get the OG dubbed VAs back

Three more films after this one :) And yeah, Ramiel's scream is pretty creepy with human-like quality giving you a reminder that Angels in Evangelion are 99.98% a genetic match with humans Can't wait to see your reaction to 2.22
The movies are not a remake, they are a sequel, it is the world that Shinji put back together, Hideki leaves the trail of the sea of blood, in addition to other elements that will be seen in the future, Hideki puts part of his life again to make this saga, now he overcame depression thanks to the love of his wife and you will see her in this sequel.
I like to think that the original 26 episodes, the two "movies" ending with End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild series are all just cycles of their universe, one after the other. And the final Rebuild movie is where they finally break the cycle and stop repeating history
If you guys were to watch the Funimation Blu-ray’s, you can tell that the script is altered to be more direct Japanese translation and the line reads are different in this Amazon dub. Personally, I don’t like it. The original Funimation English script and line reads sound better imo.
This is how I was introduced to Evangelion. I missed the show in the 90s and got sent 1.11 in error by LoveFilm (remember them?). Rather than complain and get the film I ordered, I figured oh I’ve heard of this and watched it. Then waiting years for 2.22, more years for 3.33 and even more years for 1.0+3.0.
54:33 “because it sounds like a person” 26 episodes and a movie that spoon feeds lore and they haven’t figured how close angels are to humans XD. Also Shinji wouldn’t goon this early in their trauma.
While it is true Hideaki Anno started these movies in a much better state of mental health, history kind of repeated itself and working on these movies did a number on him mentally. The delays between each movie release got very bad. Just like on the show he scrapped his original idea for movies three and four and went in a different direction than originally planned. His mental health got so bad that after finishing the third movie he became suicidal again. The reason is still with us is thanks to the support of his wife and Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki. After taking a long break following the third movie, it was only after he voiced the main character in Hayao Miyazaki's movie "The Wind Rises" and then directing Shin Godzilla that he was finally ready to return to work on the final movie.
While im personally not a fan of these dub actors, you'll start to get used to it eventually. Also cause I know people are gonna say it, no there is no confirmation of this being some time loop sequel. It's a fan theory, and way too many people have taken it to heart.
No, it was so they could recognize the water is red in the same exact scenes in this one, which is to clue them in that it's a sequel of sorts. or a different timeline or continuity.
Fun fact. you mentioned pacific rim. Pacific rim originally was a project by Guillermo del toro to make a live action version of Evangelion. When that fell through he made his own “pacific rim” heavily inspired by Evangelion.
this is actually the original dub cast. who you heard when watching the anime was a netflix redub of the show. i personally prefer the netflix cast, but the OG dub is also classic!
@@MrSatan1003 I think it depends on what you're looking for in a dub. nothing about the first fight was different in any way with a single exception: when Unit-01 heals its broken arm, it was more of a magical light effect in the original, rather than bloody meat reconfiguring itself and somehow regrowing armor/cover/paint?
That’s why while I was watching Evangelion 2.0, I enjoyed it a lot more because the characters Toji and Kensuke’s voice actors are different and don’t sound like adults when their CLEARLY children LOL.
Asuka finds Shinji disgusting because he can never make his own decisions and stick with them in the first version. "This is a revisiting of the series but under a better mental health by the creator" Nah, I think he fell into depression again by the third film and that one was bleak. But he was fine again by the last film. The Rebuild series are not as good as the OG series but I think the final film makes it all worth it. Time loop theory or not, NGE-EoE-Rebuild should be watched as one mental health/psychological viewing experience.
You guys should watch Bokurano, the anime made by those who felt Evangelion was too cheerful and optimistic a show about kids piloting giant robots....
Well responding the question of that silhouette in the very beginning of the movie in the middle of those destroyed buildings: was the Eva 01 who fought first with the angel but was rei inside the Eva. That's why rei was hurt when she meets shinji. The battle didn't resulted as gendos plan
@@andrewrojas1356 dude... be specific. the first angel is adam. or do you mean the first angel that appears on screen? no matter what... rei didn't fight an angel before.
To be fair, the dub for the rebuilds is most of the cast from the original dub grown up. So of course it's them trying their best to sound like the originals. The Netflix dub was new people chosen. Still I prefer the original adv dub over the Netflix dub.
waitwaitwaitwait. I HAVE copies of the rebuild movies. thet is NOT what Kensuke and tracksuit boy sound like in my copies. did they seriously re-dub the Rebuild movies?!?!?
real fans watch with subtitles anyway. I can't stand the english voice actors voices compared to how rei and misato souund in japanese. It does make it harder to understand tho
The Studio Khara dub. It’s the second dub on Amazon supervised by Anno’s studio with slightly different scripts. Spike Spencer is back but not many of the others.
@lalalarose8197 I'm sorry, I feel like I'm having a Mandela effect here but, Spike Spencer, Tiffany Grant, Amanda Winn Lee (who wasn't in the funimation dub), and Alison Keith are all not in this version as well? Just looked at BTVA for Misato but no one but Alison Keith voices her for the Rebuilds.
I aint gonna lie-- I know people were probably happy the old cast was revived for the films, but tbh I prefer Casey Mongillo as Shinji over Spike Spencer😅 Overall, I never got a taste of the original dub consistently because my former partner who introduced me to it insisted on the sub first. I saw the original dub from clips/memes instead. While I figure that the other gripe with the Netflix version is the use of the "approved" script from the Japanese committee, I do think the new csst got some undeserved hate. That aside, I'm watching this for the commentary.
The added details are nice, but yeah, I also miss the grain and the old voice actors. To give credit where credit is due, they were good at continuing the feelings of frustration of the pressure and manipulation Shinji goes through, as well as every stressful scene is still just as stressful and anxiety-ridden.
i mean... You already watched the whole thing so i don't know if this kind of comments are even worth it, but not EVERYTHING they say and show to Shinji is manipulation and gaslight, specially in the rebuilds. Many things are genuine, like this recordings of the people he knows giving him courage 48:33
it is said that van gogh made his best work while he was getting the mental health care he needed so remaking this series after healing like he really cooked this time
While I’m happy to see more people see my favorite series, I’m still dismayed over the erasure of the original dub voices. They did such a great job reprising their roles in the rebuilds, Asuka’s VA even speaks German, I really wish they’d been preserved.

It is a beautiful French Renault Alpine A310 V6!!!!
love that car
"This is a revisiting of the series but under a better mental health by the creator" Nah, I think he fell into depression again by the third film and that one was bleak. But he was fine again by the last film. The Rebuild series are not as good as the OG series but I think the final film makes it all worth it. Time loop theory or not, NGE-EoE-Rebuild should be watched as one mental health/psychological viewing experience.
Hope y'all are gonna see the 4th movie too!
Sweet! Yeah, they got the OG dub VAs for the movies, and it sounds so much better. Also the Ramiel dakka scene is just *chef's kiss*.
Cris's shirt indicate that they react to berserk?
You can find rest of the Eva movies on our Patreon. You can binge all those movies now for just $5 early access: patreon.com/thenormies
Fun fact: English dub va for All For One also played Shinji’s dad, here.
I started the rebuild in dub and quickly switched it to sub after listening to this abysmal excuse of a performance myself
It begins
Welcome to the Layer Cake
Y'all said "out of the three". There are four movies. Thr fourth is called 3.0+1.0 so it can be confusing.
The battle didn't resulted as gendos plan
there was no battle. wtf are you talking about
@@kuhpunkt that's obvious but that happens earlier, we didn't see but in the main story was rei who fought with this angel before
@@andrewrojas1356 what angel are you talking about...
@@kuhpunkt the first one.
@@andrewrojas1356 dude... be specific. the first angel is adam. or do you mean the first angel that appears on screen? no matter what... rei didn't fight an angel before.
Trust me when i say the rebuilds are worth the watch especially since you watched EoE. The pay off will come in the 4th and final movie.
Chris was in jail?💀
To be fair, the dub for the rebuilds is most of the cast from the original dub grown up. So of course it's them trying their best to sound like the originals. The Netflix dub was new people chosen. Still I prefer the original adv dub over the Netflix dub.
waitwaitwaitwait. I HAVE copies of the rebuild movies. thet is NOT what Kensuke and tracksuit boy sound like in my copies. did they seriously re-dub the Rebuild movies?!?!?
yes
not showing the scream is a crime.
She do be AAAAAAAAAAA
She dooooo
Will you react to the abridged version of this?
You're almost behind 3 rick and morty episodes whats going on The Normies
Thrice upon a time gonna hit different
Yeah they probably should have the funimation dub cause while it's the og voice actors their performances in the three movies don't hit the same
With the Amazon dub
real fans watch with subtitles anyway. I can't stand the english voice actors voices compared to how rei and misato souund in japanese. It does make it harder to understand tho
@@provisionalhypothesis"real fans" don't shit on other fans for their own language preferences.
ah, looks like I'm going to be watching the rebuild again along with the normies
Which dub was this? Not the one with the original 90’s cast?
The Studio Khara dub. It’s the second dub on Amazon supervised by Anno’s studio with slightly different scripts. Spike Spencer is back but not many of the others.
@lalalarose8197 I'm sorry, I feel like I'm having a Mandela effect here but, Spike Spencer, Tiffany Grant, Amanda Winn Lee (who wasn't in the funimation dub), and Alison Keith are all not in this version as well? Just looked at BTVA for Misato but no one but Alison Keith voices her for the Rebuilds.
No they are all in this version they brought back everyone@@japaduane7349
everyone is back what are you talking about??@@lalalarose8197
@@japaduane7349 are there three dubs to this film series?!
I aint gonna lie-- I know people were probably happy the old cast was revived for the films, but tbh I prefer Casey Mongillo as Shinji over Spike Spencer😅
Overall, I never got a taste of the original dub consistently because my former partner who introduced me to it insisted on the sub first.
These are the old voice actors though
37:55 did bro made a undertale reference?
This VA for Toji does not sound like a child at all. 🤣
1:02:53 ...just you wait
You guys just like the pain at this point..
