  • A 20.6 mile backpacking loop in the Grayson Highlands and Mount Rogers areas along the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. The hike starts and ends at the Elk Garden parking area, and includes the Appalachian Trail, Crest Trail and VA Highlands Horse Trail.
The weather was mixed, starting with a cloudy day that gave way to wind and rain the first night. Things began to clear the next day, but the wind persisted. Day three was gorgeous with blue skies and warm sunshine all day.
This area is known for its wild ponies and longhorn cattle that roam the higher elevation balds. The views are beautiful along much of the trail and this area is a favorite along the Appalachian Trail.

One of the best hiking videos I’ve seen. For those who are unable to hike-like myself-it offers a rare glimpse of some of the friends and foes you might run across in the wild. A great video with wonderful editing! Beautiful sights and sounds of nature.

That's a nice loop I've done it several times over the years. I grew up nearby and still live pretty close.I call the area my ''backyard'',lol. New sub here.

Thanks so much! We are so glad we discovered this area. Will be up there again in September. Love how it stays relatively cool through the Summer. Maybe we'll see you out there 😄

I need to hike this loop. I have backpacked this section of the AT already but this looks like the perfect backpack with my daughter. I will need to check it out. Any websites I can check out Jeff? Thanks for sharing your video, looked like another great hike!
