    The problem with this system is: the canon is produced in Switzerland and therefore you get a hell of regulations if Germany wants to export this. See f.e. the current situation with the Gepard aa-tank that also uses the older Oerlikon AA-gun in 35x228 and for which Germany now can't export the ammunition.

    0:50 - Oh Lord. It's such a straight-forward solution, too. Swarm-tactics are like when a Tiger fights an ant-hill - it's not as straightforward a victory as it would seem.
    It's weird and cyclical - going small to going big-and-powerful ... then back to small... and when these small things fall to these guns, probably they'll go back to big-and-durable things which put everyone back at the drawing-board looking for the missile-launchers that we use today.
    Though this does make an interesting point about attacks becoming "obsolete" ... they *never* go obsolete if the enemy is forced to always contend with it again in the future. That's not "obsolete", it's just "counter-able"... _but only _*_if_*_ the enemy counters it._ Like how body-armor didn't render guns obsolete, it just made it so that you *have* to wear it.

    • @arie9123
      @arie9123 Год назад +25

      From watching the footage, I saw some clues as to how the system works. When the drones get shot, you see the explosions happen above the swarm of drones. This looks to me like some explosive ordnance with a proximity fuse/timed fuse that sends a cloud of shrapnel towards incoming targets. Much like the Oerlikon AA-gun (I think they are closely related). So, from this, you don't actually need extreme accuracy, as long as you saturate the approximate area of the target with rounds, you'll be good to go

      @@iulianberca4860 someone else said it was a timed explosion instead of a proximity fuse - the radar sets time-to-detonation in each projectile as it goes thru the barrel, so it creates the shrapnel cloud in front of the target. Pretty clever system.
      But it still doesn’t answer my questions about the over tracking system and how well it can handle multiple dispersed targets in the whole threat hemisphere. Or how well it can maintain tracking locks on targets while the vehicle is in motion, or how quickly can it traverse from one target to the next…

    • @ddopson
      @ddopson Год назад +4

      I think it's done purely by timing, as you can't fit all that much electronics into a 20mm shell. A precisely timed burst combined with a predictable velocity gives surprisingly good control over burst location, and that can be effective if you've got an accurate estimation of the range to the target. The alternative strategy would be radar fusing, like the VT shells from the latter half of WW2. Those were highly effective against airplanes, but small quadcopter drones, which are mostly plastic, might not have enough of a radar return to trigger a radar fused shell. It's sorta funny how we've actually gone backwards to timed shells, which became effective again once they were better automated and paired with modern range finding (ie, the radar set controlling the gun). With WW2 timed shells, in addition to having less precision, the timed fuse had to be manually adjusted with a screw-driver before the shell was loaded into the gun; now it's electronically set as the shell is being fired.

HOWEVER, they could also use the simple radio device too. All it does take is a very small radio in it with only liked a 20 feet range and anything in 20 that haves metal or electronics will caused a flux in the radio signal and makes it detonate. They had thosed small enough in WW2 to put in to 40mm AA bullets so I think probly they could maked them way very smaller now. But why do that when do you haved a super RADAR that can do very the same thing already in the tank?

      The drones are not shot down with the entire projectile. This is an intelligent, programmable explosive munition that explodes into 150-200 small pieces of tungsten just before the target. The ammunition is programmed at the muzzle of the gun barrel at which distance it should explode. The distance to target values are calculated by the radar and the fire control system. It is difficult to accommodate the mechanism of programmable ammunition in smaller calibers. In addition, 3.5 cm ammunition has a greater fragmentation effect than 2 cm ammunition.

      Are lasers sure to fit the bill? For a highly reflective and geometrically optimized target the size of a drone, how much time does it roughly take to intercept it? Asking out of genuine interest. Cannon fire has practically instant effect on target. In anything other than flat terrain, drones are pretty much guaranteed to have safe pathways that bring them within a mere couple hundred or less meters from the A/D system while remaining fully occluded by said terrain. Are such systems able to "zap" a drone at the snap of a finger? Cannons can most certainly do this when provided with solid automation.

    • @koskok2965
      @koskok2965 Год назад +1

      @Jim Carner Remember occlusion as well. If the system's position is known, the enemy will probably use the terrain to get to the system while avoiding LOS. Then it'll be a Latakia S-400 kind of deal. Absolutely ferocious system, but only when it sees the target. This one should be able to shoot down drones in extremely short time windows. A terrain exploiting swarm attack could absolutely wreck the system if it can't vaporize each drone instantly, within a radius of a couple hundred meters.

      Well it was never developed to counter Drones like MQ-9. But can destroy any Ammunition fired from the MQ-9. But to destroy the MQ-9, you need Missiles for that.

      I think you're going to need different weapons for different drones. China makes most of the drones currently available, and they're not shy about who they sell them to. They have jet powered drones larger than a Reaper, and swarms of tiny ones capable of carrying nothing heavier than a grenade. But somehow you've gotta defend against all of them. Especially if you're from Taiwan...

    Rhein-METAL is not the correct pronunciation- Rhine-met-ALL with two Ls as in ALL is the correct pronunciation in both English and German. RheinmetALL--isn't that simple? For ALL you commentators. If you're discussing weapons, why not pronounce them correctly and professionally? That's my suggestion of the day, over and out.
