  • Banteay Torp is a remote temple located 7.7km south-southeast of Banteay Chhmar (roughly 11 kilometers by modern road). Its name means "the Citadel of the Army", and likely refers to the military garrison stationed here during the reign of King Jayavaramn VII (r. 1181-1219). The purpose of the temple is not known, but conceivably it may have been built either to commemorate the military's recent conquests or as the religious centerpiece of a garrison-city located here.
The complex originally consisted of 5 chimney-like towers arranged in a cross shape, with each tower constructed in the elongated style also found at Preah Palilay in the heart of Angkor. Unfortunately, these towers are inherently unstable, and only 3 of the towers survive in partial form today. The site has only received a bare minimum of conservation and is potentially dangerous, as the remaining towers could collapse at any time without warning. However, enough of the temple survives that an a partial restoration is still possible. Here, in fact, is one of the few locations where one can see wooden relics of the Khmer empire in situ, as several large carved wooden panels are visible partway up the towers, as shown in the images.
