Yes I seal it... I never tried gesso before only varnish.

May i ask what brushes you were using to put on adhesive and brush in gold foil

You can use any flat brush to add the adhesive and I personally like to use a fan and fluffy brush to add the gold leaf.

How much time it takes to dry

I always leave the texture overnight or for a couple hours in the sun... and once the glue is clear and covered the gold leaf is ok.
