This video was exactly what I was looking for. I have two pay vices that do not have springs and was trying to figure out how to replace them. Thanks!

I forgot to ask, did you quench the spring at the end? I don't want to end up with a spring that's to stiff.

I figured that this steel was alloyed to be a spring therefore it would be one as long as I didn't introduce any stress and/or fractures. So, I just normalized it by taking an even orange heat and letting it air cool. If the ambient temp in your shop is kind of cold, you might want to do this 2-3 times. This type of spring doesn't have to do much work; and I agree with you that tempering it seems like overkill.

That answers my question well enough. Thanks!

Nice video. What was the length of your starting piece for this? What was it from, a leaf spring or something?

I started with about 10 inches (254mm) of ⅝" (16mm) diameter coil spring.

I'm a newbie. I picked up a post vice that doesn't have a spring. How necessary is it to have a spring? Is that something I should do right away?

The spring pushes the jaws apart making it easier and quicker to engage/disengage the hot work piece. My advice... use it and if you get frustrated by the function of the jaws, then you probably need to make a spring. Doesn't have to be a spring like the one I made, you can find a coil spring from the hardware store that fits somewhere below the jaws and fasten it with zip ties. The best answer, though, is to act like a blacksmith and make one.
