Look, all 200 characters (1-off villains and side characters included) are super essential to the story and if one of them is removed the whole story would just be bland and unreadable.

Yeah, sometimes you just need a certain type of character to interact as a plot device. Not everything has to be so deep 🙂
My story is characters driven and has 9 main characters (1 is the mc, 2 is the deuteragonist, 7 are the tritagonist of the series) I also have some major characters and supporting characters I like for people to get to know and enjoy. They all have their own stories and personalities. They're specifically teenagers in highschool.

Personally I only have 3 main characters
The example of perspective shift is exactly what I was looking for. I've never liked the idea of a single protagonist as it makes it feel like they drive what goes on with the world instead of the world driving what goes on with the character. I think that a protagonist of the arc approach is what I want to do.

First draft of my manga was kinda like that; 7 characters, all fighting for the spotlight of 30 pages. Most of the characters would just been standing there frozen when 2 characters were speaking. After about 3 times of remaking the storyboard I ended up sparing a character for the 2nd chapter and having just a cameo of her in the 1st chapter, scraping another character entirely and giving her inportant roles and traits to the other characters, making a less important character one dimentional and having 3 of the characters "in a group" as you say'ed in the video. Overall, it's much easier to comprehend the characters in the end result! 😂😂
I thought having a cast of 18 characters was a large cast, and there are people with way over 30 characters here.

I have 4 "main characters" hehe (and 2 more that will appear later), and in my first chap they all appear together but like you said in the vid, I'm putting them in different places and situations and half of the time they are rather separated from each other so it's not like the whole chapter is just one place with all of them shown at the same time. I think it turned out not too overwhelming and not too boring either.
I can't even begin to tell you how much your videos have helped me completely write my story in a way that doesn't have a crap ton of plot holes in less than hours.
I need a large cast of characters to make my long-running series work. To give more variety. So, it is important to know to how to manage them.

Personally I have maybe 65 characters BUT only 3 main characters and I'm basically getting a general Idea of who I want them to be and look like( and their backstorys)

Thank you for the video! I've been worrying about this since I publish my comic in day 1. I have 2 MCs and other 18 side characters consisted of 4 group of caravans, each caravans has 5 crew members. so total 20 characters driving the story forward. I had this problem where some people complained I introduced too many characters at once or that my char designs look sortly similar. (I introduced 5-6 characters in first 3 chapters, but 1st chapter only highlights 2 MCs). It's far too late to start all over again because i'm already entering second arc and have plenty of loyal audiences already, but thanks to this video I will learn how to distribute a better pacing to give relevancy each of the characters without taking away spotlight from my 2 MCs

what he said about the s ep rule is right cause in japan if a manga cant be successful within 10 weeks it will get canceled putting that into anime 3 ep is is 10 ch of manga so that why they want a hook within 10 ch so if u get an anime the readers will watch the anime cause its interesting
What about Ensemble Casts of characters? Like I want to build up a group of 9 Heroes from different backgrounds for a character driven narrative of a group of misfits.

The 3 kings of open weight combat: “Latino heat” thrill seeker, Bruce Lee reference, white boy thug
The 4 horsewoman of style: metalhead, shopaholic, pro wrestler, country gal
The rookies: break dancer, broke college student, guy on weight loss journey, scene kid, a-hole prodigy (instigator)
Enemies: trust fund kung fu billionaire, hater pretending to be fanboy (fight promoter), rival gyms, yakuza ninjas, a bunch of Charlies mad at the thug for going full martial artist

So does that mean the main character is not essential? Because from what I've heard of, the leading protagonist is supposed to be the most important one. Then again, I have no desire to make any of my character's roles in the story meaningless.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It all depends on the story! For example, in the novel, The Great Gatsby, the story focuses on this bigger than life character Jay Gatsby. But the story's protagonist is a bystander named Nick Carraway. Nick is FAR LESS interesting than Gatsby and spends most of the novel documenting Gatsby's adventures.
In that story, the main character isn't as essential as the other characters, but he is still the protagonist of the story who is telling the story through his eyes
In most cases, yes, the main character SHOULD be the most essential. But there are exceptions to every rule and it all depends on the type of story you are writing
I currently have four main characters for my Manga. Each one is equally important as they all drive the story forward in their own way.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! I apologize for replying so late! 13 characters is definitely ambitious but not THAT unheard of. Amazing anime like Durarara and Baccano does an amazing job of juggling a huge cast of characters. I feel like my biggest advice is to group them off. Have some chapters about a set group of characters and then other chapters with others. Some chapters might focus on one single one interacting with stuff. And the more exciting points will be when all of these characters start crossing paths. The key is just pacing. Don't rush anything and definitely plan ahead! Best of luck!

I mean, calculate the clichés used for total drama, see how limited it is, well if we would include the ones used by Disventure Camp in variety or adults, since it is impossible to have a super long cast, friend, just focus on quality over quantity, because I mean You are going to be saturated and you will end up screwed, less is more but anyone who does not believe that lacks talent as a writer, one must make the most of little, even if it is in pieces
My story is gonna have 6 characters that is part of the Main cast I already have planned personalities and back stories for them.
But at first my MC will met 3 friends but 2 of them will die lol💀. And then he will end up becoming friends with the 3 other characters who used to be one of the err how do we call this ahh they are kind of mean to my MC. Well I mentioned earlier that my MC will met 3 friends and 2 will die the remaining 1 is also NOT part of the main cast idk just gonna forget about him💀 well that is what gonna happen on the first saga.
On the next saga that is when the other two will come and then yeah that's the final line up....
Eerrr about my main character his first appearance will look skinny and dirty with a long hair because he is homeless for 6 years (his parents dumped him when he's only 10) but even after all the struggles he is very positive, friendly and kind unlike the other characters (my story will contain people that needs EXTREME mental help💀💀💀). Oh I forgot to add he is a boy.
The 2nd member is a girl she likes to look "cute" but she's a psychopath who LOVES to kill. As a girl she's very careless I mean...she would show off her panties💀. "Just kill anyone who peak under" is something she would say lol yes she's a gremlin.
The third one is another boy. Overpowered AF. Err there is something I call "Mental Hospital-School" in my story just ask on the replies if you want to know what does that mean. Uhh That boy is the strongest student there. It Is said that he masaccared an entire room after knowing his SECRET. Well he will be friends with my MC after knowing his secret lol. About the personality; he is scary, always serious, and a "Savage" but at home he have a pet/friend rat 😆 later he will be more happy after his father's death lmao.
The 4th one is another girl she is the first student my MC will meet but she is mean and arrogant as she is one of the strong students, she is also popular because of her beauty. But later the "truth" will be revealed (I'm not gonna tell ya deadass). Unlike the other girl she is more ladylike and sophisticated.
The 5th one is a boy err he's bisexual how do I call this... Uhh imagine a gangster but kind of flirtatious, juicy/fruity lol💀 but still have that cool mf persona uhh yes that! He's a MOTHERF*CKER. And yes the kind of common "The perverted character" 💀
Lastly, another boy he's gonna be very timid, shy and quiet at first but later he will get more comfortable. One of his powers is invincibility (I'm jealous...) Actually the 5th one forced him to join the group lol. And as I said he's very shy and would easily get picked up on but among the 6 he's the 3rd strongest👀
They are a group but there's no leader there will be a line saying
"He(MC) is not our leader but he's the one that brings everyone together"
There's other characters I want to talk about but shits gonna be too long.....
Also I forgot to add... the first chapter is not about the MC Lmaooo but the 2nd member, yep the girl. I think the MC will show up on the 2nd chapter or 3rd. Yep shit is very weird but whatever I'm not gonna change that...

Three really well developed main characters could be better than 100 surface level characters! For the sake of your world, you may need to create a few side characters though haha. Best of luck!

In my opinion, maybe. I can't imagine a scenario where you're able to focus and develop more than like 3 or 4 characters at any given time.
Every story is different though, how are your characters set up? Are they in a group?
