Hey guys I just subbed, entertaining review, a couple of things to help you refine what you do, always share the system reference setup including cables so even newbies to the channel know how to contextualize your comments on the gear under review, and try to include comparisons with two other similarly priced/featured gear so we can triangulate. Best of luck with the channel!

    • @Hifyed

Thank you for the feedback! We are going to do a separate video on how we review including the gear used. We are going to try and keep as many controlled variables as possible. For example the PMC speakers used especially as I know them very well from my experience on studio side with them. This way we know exactly the changes in sound in that particular gear. Thank you about the comparisons it’s a good idea. As we do more reviews we want include how it compares to other in the same price range. I appreciate your support. I’m excited as I have worked in all sides of hifi for over 20 years from retail to manufacturing side. I needed to take a step back and do something different. although I just started the RUclips thing it has been fun so far!

Thanks for the video! I’m also a C368 owner looking to upgrade. I added a minidsp 2x4 HD to get Dirac, but I have to use an external amp and place the minidsp unit between the analog preamp outs on the C368 and the (tube) amp. With this setup the signal gets re-converted to digital, then analog by the minidsp, I’m sure some information is lost.
With built in Dirac, the C399 fixes this. And there’s even a setting to keep the phono stage pure analog in and out. Thanks for the review, I think I’ll snag one when it’s available!

Do you think that the NAD C368 would also pair well with the Lintons in retaining their warm, rich sound. Great to see a review of this amp. I've currently got a C368 driving ATC SCM11 speakers. I love the sound but at times it feels a little underpowered. Is the C399 a worthwhile upgrade? And does it run as cool as the C368?

The SCM11 do like power, similar to the PMC's we use in our reviews. The C399 does have a lot more power, however, always remember that the difference will equate to about a 3db increase. From what I remember it runs just as cool.

You must be so lucky to be able to try out so much different hifi equipment!
How do those special 40's sound?
Im enjoying my Emits but do find at loud volumes they fall apart a bit with bass losing some control, possibly due to lack of cabinet bracing and cheaper crossovers?
I love the look of the Evoke and special 40's but there's a huge price difference from the emit range.

@@hclandscapes I really like the special 40's! It's Sense of transparency is a strong point.
Class D will add the perception of brightness due to the nature of its presentation. Low distortion also means low-level harmonics, hence the reason tubes have a greater sense of warmth even if they may not measure that way.
If the sound at louder volumes sounds mechanical it's most likely due to the speaker itself. Dynaudio loves power and will notice distortion at higher levels that can be due to the amp(clipping). Just to make sure you need to isolate if it's the speaker or amplifier.
The Evokes and special '40s are quite a bit more. Keep in mind they love current and power even more than the Emits.

@@Hifyed im going to try the NAD C399 with my emit 30's, the H120 unfortunately wasn't up to the job and couldn't control the lower frequencies making everything sound boomy and uncontrolled.
the H190 worked well but was too much money to spend on speakers of this value in my opinion,
the NAD is much better price matched and has plenty power that i feel the dynaudio's need to sound right,
plus the emits in my opinion are on the relaxed warmer side of neutral so i think the character of the NAD will also work well in this regard to add a bit more top end and dynamics.
i will look forward to trying it out.

@@hclandscapes Thank you for your feedback! I'm very surprised that the H120 was not enough to drive it properly. I have not had a chance to try the newer emits however it requires more oomph to drive them properly. Thanks again for the insight! Hopefully, the 399 works out for you.

It is a pity that the phono amp is not that great. the M10v2 seems to have a better resolution on not-so-bright speakers even with Dirac on. You should emphasize on the BlueOs card, as it is really a game changer for audiophiles who do not want to hassle with software (it is simple, fast, and stable not like HEOS at least in my experience).

Thank you for the feedback! Your correct I should have gone over the BluOS a little more. 👍👍

I paired the C399 with the Mission 770's. All I can say is Lawd Honey...it drives those bad daddies like it stole 'em!

Yeah really need comparisons to be mentioned, otherwise it’s just subjective statements

Thank you for the feedback! We are working on it. I’m starting to list and make notes of all the brands I know very well which is a lot as I have been in the industry for quite along time! Before we start comparing I want to make sure we do it right. I can honestly say to myself “do I really remember” exactly what I heard months or years ago”. I just need to make sure I deliver an honest and fair comparison! Auditory memory is difficult and plays a lot of tricks!

That’s the problem. I don’t want Tech. I’ve been burned too many times with class D amplification. I want old school AB push/pull sound. I don’t think there’s a class D amplifier that can deliver the old-school sound that I’m looking for at any price.

I agree, if your looking for old-school Sonics class d won’t be the way to go. The sound of class d has become polarizing these days you either love it or hate it.

Maybe turn the background music down a bit so we can hear your voices better

Will this last longer than the piece of shit c390dd I own that is collecting dust after sinking close to $1000 on repair costs into it after it continues to fail after year 5, coincidentally just after warranty expired?

My $400 euro Marantz receiver of 15 years old has been going strong without any repairs so I am tending to the 40n even though feature wise this c399 looks very attractive but just isn’t worth it once your NAD turns into a No Audio Device.
