I'm delighted to offer my congratulations to the Milwaukee Hip Hop Archive Project for receiving the 2024 Governor’s Archives Award for Archival Innovation in recognition of the collaborative effort between the TRUE Skool Milwaukee Center for Transformative Creative Arts & Hip Hop Culture and the Wisconsin Black Historical Society & Museum. The Board of Curators voted to approve this award on June 14, 2024.
Each year the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Board of Curators recognizes outstanding historical work that helps connect people to the past. I am honored to congratulate the 2024 award winners for exemplary work in preserving and sharing history that makes a difference not just for those who can appreciate it today, but also for future generations.
The review committee commended this innovative approach to preserving history through the lens of hip hop culture. By utilizing music, particularly hip hop, as a powerful tool and source of inspiration, your efforts represent a remarkable dedication evident through the establishment of two specialized collections and the regular involvement of students in archival sessions.
The committee also recognized the diversity of the community involved, comprised of performers, scholars, DJs, and filmmakers, further enriching these initiatives. Notably, your outreach efforts extend beyond conventional boundaries, as evidenced by field trips and hip hop-themed activities held in diverse locations.

The MKE Hip Hop Archive Project is a collaborative effort between TRUE Skool Milwaukee Center for Transformative Creative Arts & Hip Hop Culture and the Wisconsin Black Historical Society & Museum. This is an archival project that will recognize the triumphs of the people within the elements (Deejaying, Graffiti art, Breakin' and Emceeing) who created and sustained it and honor their work and legacy.
