    Both submarines are excellent. The Astute class is larger by nearly 50%, hence its weapon load is much more important and it can remain at sea longer. It is also reputed to be very quiet. The Barracuda is more recent, so its sensors may be even better and it may be even quieter than the Astute thanks to more recent stealthy technologies. It also carries the most recent heavy torpedo worldwide which is a very useful asset. Both subs should not be compared directly, they do not fulfill exactly the same needs, but are at the top of attack subs worldwide and better than their eastern counterparts.

      @@yanisgyd6084 Actually “Thales underwater systems” is a British based company which was originally called “TMS”. It was owned by BAE before having the majority (49.9%) of its shares sold to Thales. Thales is effectively just the holding company. It’s like BAE Systems AB is just the holding company for the Swedish firm “Hägglunds AB “. I know this because I live across from the factory in Glasgow. It also means that Thales cannot freely give the French military the license to use it which British approval. The same reason why Britain cannot use the BAE US developed Rail gun without US approval.

Maybe you have info that i don't have and the UK may have rights over some technologies. Here, it's also the case, especially since the Barracuda is the only one in the world to launch missiles against planes flying over it. Comparing the sizes of weapons of war isn't so relevant; look at the numbers of battles the English have won with smaller, swifter ships.

    UK can't even deploy 1 sub at the moment , few month back all 4 Astute were in all maintenance... Loads of technical problems that are still not fixed 18 years after the start of the program mostly due to the design software CAO3D, UK needed the help of general dynamics and their project manager to complete the first one. The MOD also made a lot of jobs cuts in the industrie leading to lost of competence. 56 month delay for the first unit and 53% over budget. The fist unit as already 12 years of life will they ares still missing 3 unit in active service. The PWRA2 is potentially vulnerable to structural defiance, in 2012 they had a radioactive leak in the system closed system they only disclosed it to the public in 2014 with a staggering repair cost of around 230 mpounds. As of 2023 UK can't aligne even one attack submarine. the 30 August 2023 Navy lookout showed that the totality of attack class submarine were in maintenance in harbor. The devolvement and construction is taking ages 16 years for 7 units VS Barracuda class will take only 8 years for 6 units . After all that the ASTUTE Class is a formidable machine when they actually work they do look kind of badass i love their design. Kind of same for the Type 45 who as more time in dock than at sea. For those who speak French I can recommend this video " Le problème des sous-marins nucléaires d'attaques anglais ?" form GaliBellum military channel, well done documentary on this class of subs.

This is not top secret information just an educated guess.. Also, if its classified, why are you stating the estimated speeds if you don't know.
    Its widely known that the Astute was having problems reaching its designed speed (30kn) which it eventually overcame.

      It's not a "less advanced reactor" it's a different reactor, LEU for the Suffren class and HEU for the Astute class, LEU is overall cheaper and safer but require to be refueled every 10 years while HEU reactors can last for most of the lifetime of the submarine. Power output is not related to HEU or LEU but rather the reactor design.

      @MartinPHellwig Год назад

      The speed was not only limited due to specific configuration issues of the main gearing and propeller assembly, but also the inability to cool the reactor sufficiently which limited it's production capability. Once they figured out what the right gears where and at what pitch you should set them at what speed, and of course somebody managed to tell a linear actuator that it's not 50/50% from a middle point but 0/100% from a closed to open range, cooling wasn't an issue either anymore. Funnily they never really shown any figures anymore after the teething problems where dealt with, knowing full well that the reported performance figures are comparable to a racehorse with an infected foot.
