  • Trigger Warning: Talk of an eating disorder
This week I'm joined by Courtney Hope. You may know Courtney best as Sally Spectra on The Bold and The Beautiful and The Young and The Restless, but she's also a dancer, gymnast, a fitness enthusiast and she's engaged to my good friend and tv son, Chad Duell.
Courtney opens up about dealing with anxiety, battling and overcoming an eating disorder, the importance of therapy and Breaking the Chains Foundation, where she's on the board. Breaking the Chains is a unified global non-profit foundation using art as the process to unmask the stigma of individuals affected by eating disorders & negative body image. The best thing about State of Mind is hearing actors and actresses, people we admire, talking about their struggles with anxiety and depression. They are being so real and relatable. I’m on medication for anxiety for many years and it’s nice to know I’m not alone! Thank you, as always, Maurice!! ❤️

Just rewatched this interview. Awesome! I’ve been stuck in fourth gear for the last two years! You’ve been my therapy, but now seeing Dr tomorrow. All this has been effecting my health. Therapy should be mandatory for all! Should be taught in schools! Thanks for all you do! Much ❤️ 🙏🏻 from Ohio.

Thank you for reminding me that my doctor told me to get back into therapy. I’m going to get an appointment with a psychiatrist and a therapist tomorrow.
I want you to know that mental health affects your physical health. I’m 53 years diabetic. I have been diagnosed MDD with MAD. Funny thing is that I have a doctor who finally gave me the stamp of madness.😂
Anyway, anxiety affects the liver that reacts to the fight or flight chemicals that you see when women lift cars and move them around to save their loved one.
Well that’s a rise of adrenaline and glucose (sugar) and the rise raises my sugar levels to unmanageable levels. Depression effects my eating habits and takes my energy, so I definitely encourage you to try to get your mind right and I will, too.🤝🛐

What a great conversation...I teared up when she was speaking about losing her older brother. I also lost an older brother (to suicide). It was that same way with my father...he didn't cry. I did right away but I stuffed a lot of it down. Jump to 5 years later and I woke up one night from a dream about him and it all came crashing in and I was inconsolable for days after...therapy came decades later after suffering from that and other traumas. Therapy is what literally saved me from falling into a black hole. Talking and crying openly and freely about our mental health with NO shame is paramount in healing...

Black hole! That’s the term I use now when I thank my younger family members who have been my inspiration to climb out to myself.
I’m MDD since age 6 with Moderate Anxiety Disorder-MAD, since the pandemic.
I have faith in God and am blessed to have RUclips access to State of Mind to help me remember I am not alone.✌🏽🙏🏾🤝

Thank you for having Courtney on. It’s so important that women/girls learn about body image. There is not one size fits all. Young girls are taught they must look like the Barbie doll and we must break that chain. Would you post the information about “Breaking the chain” I would love to contact them. Thank you, Maurice and Courtney for this beautiful interview. As always, you do such a wonderful job and have so many interesting conversations; something everyone can relate to whether it’s personal or we know of someone struggling with these issues. God bless.

I was on Celexa for 13 years and I had no money to go to my Dr then go to get my script filled. At that time my husband and I broke up, after 20 years, and as I was going to church my husband went to a different church and invited me to a program called celebrate recovery. After a month doing this program, I looked at my husband and said, you know what I haven't been on my medication for about a month with no Manic episodes. Wow this is liberating. Because I was told by my Dr that after a year on this medication I will always be on it. Trust me when I tell you that several times I tried getting off of it with not so good results. But once I retrained my mind it was amazing. It's been 4 years with no Manic episodes ( one breakdown, seeing my father die but that's just stress). But it's been amazing what God can do when you listen and believe in yourself.
I'm not saying prescriptions are not the answer. I'm saying if you're ready to get off then you can.

@mbstateofmind @MauriceBenard Thank you for this SOM. I was bulimic for 2 years (15-17) because I felt I had to please my boyfriend by losing weight. I believe I was suffering from mental illness but no one talked about that in the 80's. Im grateful I was able to get better, and now I protect my mind and I can't please everyone. No more harm to myself. Maurice, I really appreciate you and what you do. May God bless you and your lovely family. ❤ 👍🏻🤗

Idk what to do I’m so depressed I miss my Pomeranian Wolfgang he died 2 weeks ago and the loss is like knifes in my heart... I had a ED from 11 years old till my 20s but now I have no appetite not from ED but my broken heart. I torture myself and listen to sad songs such as HONEY I MISS YOU and TO SIR WITH LOVE. All I do is CRY. My dog was part of me so I am in a BAD STATE OF MIND...... thx for this video.....

When you are ready, share your life with another dog. Not to replace your other dog, but to honor what you shared and all the relationship meant to you. The new dog will find its own place in your heart.

Agree w/Karen...it took me 3 years to get over the loss of my dog, Bungee...then, my cousin got a female runt from her next door neighbor...her mother stopped feeding the puppies at 5 weeks...so I took her...otherwise, she would've passed...I nourished her and, she's almost 2 years old now...and, she's crawled into my heart...I wouldn't know what to do if something were to happen to her! So, cry and give it time...then adopt a rescue/shelter pet! They need us!

Thank you for sharing. The only time I ever saw my father cry was when his 2nd eldest sister died because she stepped in to help my grandfather raise the youngest 2 of the 10 kids my grandparents had. I've seen my brother break down a few times when we lost a cousin, my parents, an uncle died from drug abuse, and when his brother-in-law unlived himself. My anxiety at times is so bad at times I'm a person who cries when someone slightly raises their voice at me.
