I wish I could get stuff delivered right next to my plot - had to barrow in 6 ton of topsoil & 3 ton of manure last year from 100yds away. People think I'm mad when they see the amount of compost I make until I point out that a mere 3cm layer over my 80m² of growing beds plus my 50/50 mix for potato containers works out at 3 cubic metres a year. I'm 66 now & worry about how I'll be able to keep on doing all the work needed as i get older, as growing, fishing & hunting have been my life long passions & provide much of what I eat.
Tony I felt knackered just watching you! 😂 You can see why your plot is so good you definitely but the time and effort in. 👍 love your book by the way. I’m hoping to bump into you at Malvern to get you to sign it for me🤞
I use a 30ltr carbouy made for homebrewing. It has a tap about an inch up from the bottom. You can fit mesh or even use a sludge cap ( sediment reducer) inside to hold leaves back. You can buy a cheap air lock to remove odour. Or stick a piece of carbon filter inside to stop smells coming from the tub. Easy peasy 😊 I add a bit of molasses to help break it down.
Hi Tony, lots of hard work shovelling your compost. Lovely crumbly compost. You have a lot of compost bays too. Plot is lovely and tidy too. You must be worn out after all that work. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Black gold that delivery! I live on an acreage property with cows, I enjoy pulling my trolley around collecting the cow pats for my gardens every winter when it’s cooler outside in QLD Australia. Unglamorous as it is, the benefits are superior for my gardens. I layer my gardens thick with the manure fresh or mature aged doesn’t matter, it goes on, then I rake up gum leaves (they’re dried by this time of year) and they go on top. Gum trees are typical on alot of acreage properties so I work with what I can even though a lot of people say the oils in the leaves aren’t any good. If you leave them to dry out over summer and into winter they break down easily in to mulch. Sets my gardens up for next 12months. 2 days hard yakka lasts all year. My gardens are not vege gardens btw which is why I don’t fuss about fresh or aged manure. My gardens thrive, retain moisture I rarely need to weed - once every 2-4 months. I never turn my gardens, just layer every time they need it, sometimes twice or 3times a year if I’m feeling generous. Keeps them warm, fed and everything is healthy, huge and resilient to drought and pests. I water them from our grey tank we don’t have town water, no pipes in infrastructure for that service, we collect our rain fall into tanks or buy water. Another thing you learn to live with. No fluoride or chemicals or water bill to worry about. It works. Found you video thrilling thanks Tony 😊 I get lost for time doing a marathon watching your videos. So inspiring, educational and exciting. Thank you for all your hardworking in making them for us to learn from you. You’re easy to watch, listen to, learn from. You don’t come across as ‘know it all’ and obnoxious like some channels I used to watch that have let their successes get to the heads, ramble on with overwhelming nonsense and lost touch with their audience, they’re only interested in promoting their videos algorithm.
I used to make a lot of compost when I lived in Southeast Alaska. It was quite challenging as you might imagine because of lack of manure and temperature issues. I collected chicken manure from friends and the star ingredient-- seaweed. Buckets and buckets of seaweed! But you have to let it sit for a year. I live in New Mexico now and have health problems. I think I need to hire a teenager to be my compost "technician."
"I've got another 4 tons of manure coming" Blimey you use a lot of manure! Although it's heavy if wet. I've stopped using manure here as I've been hit with aminopyralid in manure twice now. Luckily the second time I'd tested first and just had to get rid of it. I'm trying to rely on regular compost now using a lot of coffee grounds and some chaff plus Autumn leaves as a base and of course garden and kitchen waste. So far so good. I do use fish emulsion and seaweed solution too, so hopefully I'm covered. You got a good workout and a shower too.🤣
@@jimmyfaulkner5746 A silage fork is a wonderful thing that farmers use to move feed & bedding and all kinds of stuff. It's kind of a cross between a pitchfork and scoop shovel. It's way better than using a scoop shovel for turning compost. The brand that I mentioned is high quality, top of the line, built to last, with tines 16" long and 15" wide. The tines slide into the pile with very little effort, where a scoop shovel requires an extreme amount of effort. It's much, much easier on the body and it makes work a whole lot faster. It's the perfect tool to use for compost.
Get much rain over there Tony? Actually we're getting around 3" here near Philly in the States this week so won't be watering for a while. I guess you don't need a gym membership with all that shoveling. I'm getting to the age where I need to be careful with that heavy work anymore but I still do it slowly and carefully.
O LORD, thou art my God; I will exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth. (Isaiah 25:1 [KJV])
The video is from last year and was only available to members at the time but i made it available to all. the manure came from a local organic dairy farm, its cow manure and i paid £30 for the whole load
That's a lot of work but the compost looks fabulous. Great insight into the less glamorous side of gardening. Good show, mate!
It really is Scott. but this was last years it was a members only video I made 3 public by accident so left them
That's a lot of work. You must be grateful to be able to get it dumped so close to your composting area.
It sure is and yeah its great to have it there or the workload be much more
Impressive! Turning compost by hand is not for the faint of heart.
Blessings on your garden!
So true!
@@simplifygardening You'll have guns like Arnold Schwartzniger Tony💪😁.

Crack on fella . I'll be you in 20 years, still barrowing trailer loads of manure or woodchips off the road outside
At our age we need to think of efficiencies, how to do more with less effort. My solution was grandchildren...
@@AlbertRasch-ev8ucI wish I had that option but sadly not.
Might have to look into slavery...🙃
I have to rely on my son. he is 24 and needs the exercise@@AlbertRasch-ev8uc
Thats much harder and I would do that if it wasnt possible to get it close like i do

Get yourself an irish shovel for turning your compost save your back a bit of strain
No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Get yourself a ten tine Razor-Back silage fork, then you'll be cooking with Crisco.
@ozarksbuckslayer2484 what the he'll is one of those ? I think I need one

i can count the dry days on one hand since November
Have you considered storing the manure in hot beds Tony as it can save space.
Yes but this video is from last year mate. it was a members only video ive made 3 of them public
Nice big pile of manure dropped off there. Does your supplier sell trailer loads? I'm local in Ponty.
Yes but don’t think he will go to ponty
What are those fancy metal arches called and where can I buy them?😊
They are old bed frame headers and footers
I see boxes of Compost Maker for sale. Do you know what is? What's it made of?
its not required its just a pelleted for of nitrogen
Loads of work! Are these bins 1 cubic metre each?
yeah 1 cubic meter and I have 9
I went to turn my compost at the weekend but a nest of cobras stopped me. I checked again today and I think they have vacated :)
thats something i dont need to worry about
👍
Are your compost bins made of concrete?
Pallets covered in Antinox sheet IIRC.
no they are made from pallets
No need for Tony to go to the GYM, As ever great video

I use a wide fork,its easier

Cow manure?
